    good vibe! nice drone shots! I personally miss the ability to turn, pump and control the board with a body when I stand on a normal skateboard or longboard. Two different things and type of ride it. I love surfskate, but never feel a passion to skateboard or longboard when I've tried it before I find out about carver surfskate boards.

      I think next setup will be surfskate trucks (waterborne since they are readily available) on big reissue deck…maybe 65mm wheels…try to set up a slalom skateboard, it is actually the same theory, but carves are faster/snappier

      But it seems that one can actually pump on boards other than surfskates? Although I guess it depends on what is meant by "normal". ua-cam.com/video/xUHohKDiMNc/v-deo.html

    I feel like they are complementary! I'll use my surfskate for awesome fun rides, enjoying slopes and clean pavement in my neighbourhood. Sometimes I just need to get my "ride fix" and the surfskate is a very satisfying mean. However, as soon as I need to travel more than a few miles, I'll get my longboard as I know it will go twice as fast while being more energy-efficient to keep me going. Therefore, surfskating is closer to surfing on land, while longboarding would be my equivalent to a kayak. Or a bike! Thanks for making great content - you convinced me to add a surfskate to my quiver :)

    I discovered longboarding a couple of years ago. Got comfortable with 8-10 mile pushes, pushing switch for balance, riding quality LDP/Freeride setups ( not a big pintail fan). Also enjoyed learning basic freeride skills like toeside and Coleman glove down slides, and of course foot braking. I want to expand my horizons rather than give up one kind of riding for the other. I don’t surf or have any experience pumping, but I hope the skills I do have will help. Looking forward to learning from your content. And while I may not like pintails much , I appreciate that some do! All skating is good skating!

    I've had a C11 scriber for 10+ years now and originally picked it up thinking it would do what these surfskate now do. It didn't...... but I'm able to carve down most hills on it so its been great fun. Although I cannot slide it like my older longboard so sometime you just commit to the bomb! Just picked up a waterborne 2 months ago and its fantastic!! But I have fallen a few times at the skate park and being 50 years old I was wondering if its all worth it . Having found your videos this week I'm now inspired to overcoming the walls and improving my surfing. A few days in and your vids are already helping!

    Great comparison and great video, however, I love both longboard and surfskate in a different way. It's not really fair the way you said the only thing you can do on a longboard is just standing still. I pumped and carved all the time on both longboard and surfskate. I think surfsake is good in a tight space, while if you have to cruise for a longer distance with higher speed, longboard is much more fun.

    I’m a member of an all-girl skate crew in Sacramento: Sk8.916. We meet up in parking garages and I was in awe when I saw another rider take the hills on a Carver. It adds so much fun to conquering six floors versus me trying to not wobble as I reach crazy speeds.

    • @SurfskateLove
      @SurfskateLove  3 роки тому

      Yep. The carving eliminates the risk and makes it way more fun because you can take advantage of the full concrete landscape instead of being limited by what your board can do.

    I love longboards and will soon start surfskating in the next couple days. The awesome thing about long pintail longboards is they are the best looking boards and will always have a place as room decor and wall art if I switch to mostly surfskating. My only gripe with surfskating ( as a newbie according to my initial impressions, which may change) is that I'm not fond of the look of the short boards. I'm just want to carve slow speed and cruise, and like having at least a 40"+ long board so I think I'll probably build my own custom 40" x 12-14" wide surfskate deck with a 19" wheelbase and have a lot of overhang so the wheels are hidden.

    A few years back after seeing how the LDP guys do it, I just wanted to pump with no pushing as I had an injury on my calf. So I tried ‘wedging’ my front truck and ‘de wedging’ the back truck on my 40” pintail but I just couldn’t make it pump like I saw on the videos. It all turned around when I got my first 29” carving board with a specific ‘turnaround’ front truck. I was hooked, and I kept buying more, in the end I had 5 stashed in different places, car van home. Along with this, I had tried Esk8 boards and also land paddles. Let’s just say I got rid of the Esk8 boards and stayed with the surfskate and land paddle. ( I only have two surfskate boards now) .Combined with a land paddle you’re sorted for no pushing with variety. 🤙🏄‍♂️

    Yup, sounds about right. Had a longboard back in college and although it was great for commuting, it was not really that fun. Never learned to slide either so I think it's pretty limited if you can't get into that. If you can slide then maybe bombing hills is more fun but for me the control of a surfskate is preferable.

    I haven't ridden skateboards or longboards before. Last year I got myself a cruiser and had a bit of fun with it. But this year I discovered surfskating, and I don't want to ride my cruiser anymore, for all the same reasons mentioned in this video. In fact, I've converted my cruiser to a surfskate, using Waterborne Surf&Rail Adapters. So I thought it's as simple as that, surfskating > longboarding, as this video seems to imply. But recently I've learned about such longboarding disciplines as slalom and long distance pumping (LDP). Watching some LDP videos, it looks like out of the 3 reasons mentioned in this video, there's possibly just one objection against longboards that is still standing - ability to do tight carving around obstacles. Same as with surfskating, these LDP longboarders are able to go long distances without ever having to push (reason #3 debunked). There is also quite a lot of body movement involved, at least with some styles of LDP - e.g. ua-cam.com/video/xUHohKDiMNc/v-deo.html (reason #1 debunked). I think reason #2 probably still stands, I doubt even the most turny longboard setup will be able to navigate tight areas and limited spaces like the restaurant or a parking space between two cars examples in your videos. I don't have any plans to give up surfskating, or to take up LDP longboarding, but I just figure I would post this, because it seems that there's more to longboarding than you can commonly see on the street.

    Just got the Carver x Loaded Bolsa. I have to say, at least with the CX trucks, I can still kick with it like a longboard, and the giant wheels will eat curbs, which to me is the main benefit of a longboard over skateboard. So far, it seems like the best of both worlds. Is there reason you don't kick with your surfskate?
    (Also, I saw your video review of this board, with the wheel wells, and it does make me want to pick up a non-Loaded version as well. Might pick up the Greenroom C7 in a few months.)

  • @Mecylon

    Have you tried to compare a surfskate to a longboard that's meant for long distance pumping? I think even a setup like the Loaded Icarus would yield a better result as their riding style is more similar than opposed to the Pintail. I'm currently in between and would love your input of the two.

      I was on a 46" pintail with the waterborne front and rear set and 110's. Awesome set-up but I've now gone to a Santa Cruz cruiser deck and it's so much better having the kicktail and shorter deck. Now it's easy to pop off curbs and to pump carve around with some power. My back foot is always on the kick as it's the heart of pumping. Also using the carbon extender on front, a must have.
      A crazy set up trick I figured out last week and WOW! : if using the whole waterborne adapter set, you can run the rear truck reversed(facing the same way as your front) to get real world AWS. In a sports car with AWS the back wheels turn the same direction, though smaller degrees, as the front through high speed turns to keep the rear planted and stable. Turns out it works the same way on a skateboard, where monster truck steering at slow speeds provides agility, it sucks for high speed stability...hence wave energy speed wobbles. I've softer bushings in the rear adapter and really stiff bushings in the truck, so it really only starts to turn the rear once I've leaned in a bit and it's only like five degrees or so but it's crazy how now the rear feels so planted in high speed turns. Also now using the 95mm Shark wheels. Definitely the best handling board I've ever ridden now

    • @SurfskateLove
      @SurfskateLove  2 роки тому

      Yes, depending on the width of what you're skating. The faster you're going, the wider space you need to carve out. So steep, narrow trails are not good for surfskates, for example, unless you are good at slide stopping/speed checking.

      You can push, but since surfskate trucks are higher than regular skate trucks, the board is higher off the ground, so is less comfortable for pushing. Since I got my YOW, I only push once or twice when starting from a standstill. Pushing is the part I found really annoying when I got my first board, a cruiser. And I don't mind pushing on a kick scooter, but on a board it felt so annoying.

  • @DerekSantaAna

    Try out a cruiser longboard with riptide bushings and independent TKP trucks 169s or smaller. Closest feeling to surfskate without actually getting a dedicated surfskate truck. If you get the Krank riptide bushings, you can even switch from cruise riding to surfskate riding by just adjusting the bushings. I'm sure a real surfskate truck would have better pump though.

      I've actually heard a lot of LDPers recommend something like that. And honestly, my thought is, why focus on building out a longboard to behave like a surfskate, instead of just getting a surfskate? And that's a sincere question. Would it be cheaper? More fun? What would be the benefit? Thanks, Derek!

      @@SurfskateLove I wonder if this is supported by any data? Surfskates were invented to train surfing movements, and I haven't heard surfskating companies making any claims to be vastly superior at pumping. Meanwhile LDP discipline in longboarding is specifically focusing on most efficient pumping over long distances. There are various LDP records that AFAIK were all set on LDP longboards. If surfskate trucks are superior for LDP, then we should see in the future some LDP surfskaters setting new records.

Just to catch some wind in my hair and feel a bit free. But they didn't recommend a surfskate for beginners. Instead they said skateboard or cruiser. In my ears that sounds wrong.
