Saw the very first of them in 1962 while working at the Colchester Lathe Company. Their livery then was Crimson with a double yellow stripe separated by a thin black line. When the 2 and 4 car sets were coupled together, they had the distinction of being one of the most powerful trains on the BR system, because each set had their own traction motors

Good luck with the restoration. I was a guard in the late 80's at Colchester depot and always liked these, they felt like proper trains. We had one job working ,during the morning peak, a train from Stowmarket to Liverpool St, which was a 309. It's a while ago now so I could be wrong but I think we were fast from Ipswich. I always looked forward to that week.

Well done, that man! These were great units in their day and brought a lot of excitement when they whizzed through Gidea Park, where I went to school 1967-74, with their 1Fxx headcodes and bound for Frinton & Walton, with a portion for Clacton. Perhaps push-pull operation beckons, using the driving car like a DBSO, with a 47/7. Jaffa Cake livery too? I only ever saw one train in that excellent livery, at Stratford. They were known to us as Clacky-Wallies. You could stand in the corridor between the cabs where two driving cars coupled and watch the speedo hitting the 100 mark! Those were the days!

Hello Mike from Gidea Park. I'm Vic from Gidea Park !
There was a 4 car 309 set that used to work, from Colchester to Liverpool Street, stopping at Gidea Park at 05.50 on the Up Main (Platform 1 at Gidea Park). It used to race the 05.50 arrival from Southend Victoria that came in on the Up Electric Line (Platform 3 at Gidea Park). Not all ticket collectors knew about the rare arrival on Platform 1 and used to shout at us, that we were going to the wrong platform !
      My earliest recollection of a 309 was a 12 (3 x 4) or a 10 (4 + 4 + 2) car set to Walton-on-Naze with a griddle car in 1969. Young Vic going to Kirby Cross.
Of course, I have done them to Clacton, Frinton and Walton spending most of my youth there On daytrips and holidays.
Later doing them to Ipswich and Norwich.
Ended up working on the railway. Now retired.

Used to finish an hour earlier on a Friday so would dash from Kings Cross to Liverpool Street to catch the 15:10 service. First stop Romford. Always remember some of the pantographs being over the driver's cab and the hum from them when sitting in the carriage. Saw it at the Lavender line last year. Will be nice to see it restored.
Was at Gaugemaster on Sunday and we discussed it there. Small world as video appeared this morning.

Well done you! So pleased to have found this video and to see that a 309 is going to be preserved pretty close to where it would have last travelled the main line.
I was an avid train spotter for a few years and then from Chelmsford, a London commuter, back in the mid 70's to early 80's. I travelled on these frequently. They were indeed comfortable, powerful and rapid!
I loved to stand in the corridor by one of the coupled cabs in-between units and watch the speedometer. The fastest stretch for me was between Ingatestone and Chelmsford, where I once saw an indicated 110mph.
I look forward to seeing the 309 upon my next visit to the museum.
Incidentally, noting your enthusiasm for EMU's, last year I was at Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon, and they were in the process of restoring a 1949 class 306 sliding door EMU, which I remember very well being used on the Liverpool St. to Shenfield suburban lines. They were certainly not fast or comfortable and gained, from me and a few enthusiast friends, the nickname, ' Wreck units'!

Having commuted to and from Liverpool Street to my home in n Witham for many years l have a particular fondness of these trains, l traveled home every night on them and enjoyed the company of the same three friends around a table where we would consume a bottle of scotch each night on our way home, l remember when they came into service that they had wrap around windows in the driver’s cab, they were converted into flat screens presumably because of cost and safety for the drivers

Growing up in Colchester, these were regular for my travels. I’d always try for a loco hauled Norwich or Harwich boat train but travelled on plenty of these. When I used to commute from Marks Tey, I’d try and catch the services that were 309 workings as they were so much more comfortable than the cramped 312s

Almost Pig like (442) at the front. 304s & 310s were my local units in Coventry growing up, I liked being able to look out the front from behind the driver on the 310s. Sadly none were preserved.
All Pigs scrapped except one DTS. I couldn't believe that the NRM wasn't interested in preserving an example of the fastest 3rd rail train in the world.
I hope a 159 will be preserved when their time comes. I'd prefer it if it was in SWT livery and interior though they way they were when I drove them.

a real treat - please tell me you are going to restore the curved cab windows(?) the original problem is unlikely to manifest in retirement

    • @cepg309
      @cepg309  28 днів тому +2

@@captainboing it's been something asked of us many times. It's not something we are looking to do. The main factor is cost, getting each curved window made (as they are a custom shape, double glazed units with additional layers inside for heating) would be extremely expensive. It would also necessitate cutting out the corner pillar which is now acting as a crash pillar. Even if we had the money to do all this, it would put it out of line with the rest of the set, as internally and every other window was changed and is now as it was rebuilt in 1987. To make everything match, you would have to replace every single window and frame, on the vehicle, as well as completely rebuild the interior. All that expense and time for a cosmetic change is simply something we realistically cannot justify as there's so many much more important jobs to undertake. I hope you can understand the rationale behind our decision.

I needed to know why they couldn’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for most of the mainline Trains so that they could extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock which will include the class 507, class 508, class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign all of them into an overhead wire line trains and also make most of them into Five carriages per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Gardner 6LXC, Cummins M11, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Scania N112, Gardner LG1200 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 10-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 507, class 508, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into 11 carriages per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers? A Stock Train and 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it even much more Larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. Then put the modernised 11 carriages per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 carriages per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly Line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Gardner 6LXC, Cummins M11, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Scania N112, Gardner LG1200 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 87 Octagon and Every 48 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 147MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 147MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!, oh can you make all of those 18 Tonne Boxes of Coal for all of those 147MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!!!! So please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!!! And PLEASE do something about these very very important Professional ideas Please?
