  • A quick, easy, and cheap method to strongly secure a handlebar extension to increase the packing area of your handlebar for loading a front roll pack, handlebar bag, etc. Leaves room for your hands on the bars.
In part 2 I better illustrate how I wrapped the zip ties around the extender arms and the stem to lock the extender in place.

I was looking to put the same kind of bar on my bike. Used the rubber and cable tie trip... works awesome! Thanks!

Thank you for the two helpful videos on installing the yahoo handlebar extender! Per you recommendation and advice I ordered one this morning. Much less expensive alternative to the pricey Baryak solution you mentioned!
Both of my gravel bikes currently have 42cm handlebars on them (2019 Specialized Diverge Comp & 2021 GT Grade Expert) . I've been using the GT Grade for touring and bikepacking. The sausage shaped Ortlieb 9L handlebar pack I use (and the Ortlieb accessory bag which attaches to the front of it) sometimes partially obstruct my shifter & brake levers. So I wrapped a couple bungee chords around the sausage shaped bag to compress the width. I may end up purchasing Redshift Kitchen Sink 44cm handlebars (come with & without an extension loop & fancy drop grips & longer bar tape) to resolve this issue but first plan to give this handlebar extender a try on my current 42cm handlebars before possibly installing it on the more expensive 44cm Redshift Kitchen Sink handlebars if I decide to get them.
Thanks also for the two videos on your bikepacking set-up as well.

I use a 10 litre compression bag for my sleeping bag, mounted to the handlebar extender. The 3.5 L Ortlieb accessory pack is attached to that. Because I can cinch the compression bag down to a very compact size, I have no problem shifting.
The video showing that setup on the 42cm Specialized bars is here: ua-cam.com/video/Q1VnSTQzvFA/v-deo.html
That said, I just switched out my handlebar to 42cm Ritchey Venturemax. Slight flair, shallow drop for better hand position options. The flair also angles the brake/ shifter levers so there is even better clearance.

I keep hoping manufacturers like Salsa or Topeak will come out with an extender like these that can hold a lot of weight on bumpy surfaces. They are so useful to keep the handlebars accessible.

I agree. Couldn't wait for someone to make one at a reasonable price so came up with this solution. Still working after a couple years of use

Pro tip, you know zip ties can be reused? Get a sharp pointed knife and you can carefully use the point to hold the notch inside the fastening part and undo the zip tie for reuse.

hey Dad nice videos... may i give you another idea. if u put a couple of turns of a rubber strip in the handlebar and then put the extension over it, will work pretty good and looks more cleaner (u can use an old piece of inner tube, or double contact rubber tape) just a couple of turns or it become wide too much.
    greetings from chile

Baryak is a nice system, just expensive. My method gives me the same result at a considerably lower cost.

@@adventuresonadadbike8830 Hi. We are obviously thinking along the same lines! I finally found one of these cheap Chinese accessory mounts that didn't just fall apart. Cost £10. However, I have zip tied directly from the bar stem to the cross bar of the mount giving more bracing. You lose the central mounting point for other things but my main mission was to provide space for the brake and gear cables behind the luggage. The system is rock solid and a fraction of the cost of a Baryak.

Hi, I have just bought a GoPro 8 to fit to my bikepacking MTB. I have a front handlebar bag with the Quickclick system, 30 years old! My question is, on your handlebar GoPro setup do you not see your front bag in the GoPro footage. If yes wondering whether to use an extender to mount the GoPro to avoid the bag obsuring the footage. Cheers Jim

Yes sometimes the bag gets in the way and I should extend the Gopro a bit higher. Just haven't done it yet!
