I have already read 35 fiction books in 2022! As well as several non fiction - reading is EVERYTHING! My vocabulary has expanded so much, I find I am able to communicate much more easily with people as well as being able to express my feelings in a much clearer way!
Dang thats really good! I dont have alot of fiction books. My books usually consist of dense reads on philosophy, psychology and forensics. Im barley at 10 lol
I recently read The Familiar Dark by Amy Engel. I'm a young adult male living in a city. Reading about a single mother living in a small town who's only child was murdered was a very different perspective. Even if it's not a true story, it showed me a lot of the horrors women face in the modern world. There's some pretty dark stuff in there but empathy wise was very valuable as some problems Eve faced in the book are actually experienced by a lot of women.
This was so interesting - I love hearing your perspective on topics through the lens of brain science. I've always loved reading fiction too, I guess for me it is also nice to do something that doesn't involve a screen. Especially as I use my laptop most of the day for work.
I just started reading fiction again. i use to enjoy it as a teenager but fell off the wagon. Keep writing! Your contribution to the world is valuable!
I for one get annoyed that so many books are adapted into some form of screen medium. One may picture a character a certain way and then suddenly an actor can ruin the way we pictured the character. I’m proud to admit that I have not seen a single Harry Potter movie! And I always refuse to look at it when someone watches it in my presence. I’ll leave the room or leave the residence. Harry Potter is good enough to experience in written form only, and doesn’t need a screen adaptation to back it up.
I really appreciate this video. I used to devour fiction in my adolescence. Suddenly, I become an adult and subconsciously determined that fiction is a waste of time (I have the same regard for movies nowadays, as well). Nonfiction sociological and theological books that examine life, living, and society appeal to me the most, but lately I've had a strong desire to feel the enchantment of fiction again. My problem is, I need to feel like the reading is worthwhile (weighty prose, social commentary, examination into the human experience) in order for it to feel useful to me. In other words, it's not just story I'm after. I need an intellectual challenge and wisdom.
Once again I think the youtube algorithm for showing me your channel I just saw 2 videos and I already in love with your channel . Keep up the good work mate . (+1 subscribe)
Fellow Jewish brother, and fellow non-religious one (like most of us, thankfully, and I'm spiritual as well), Daniel Radcliffe, the Harry Potter actor. ^_^
For those who replied, I started with the Percy Jackson series. At first I was so thrilled about it, I read the first 5 books in a blink, I remember reading one of them in 2 days. Then I started to read friends recommendations. One of the better was "The book thief". I also bought "Dracula" and "1984" both of them an interesting read but not my favorite.
Hi I just recently found your channel and I think it's good. I am a reader meself. But I haven't been reading for a while and i recently just got back to reading but after reading few chapters headache strikes. Is this normal?

I'm a 59 year old male and last read fiction in my last year of school in 1983. My issue with fiction is that because the characters don't exist (other than in the author's imagination) and as such I can't get invested in what happens to them because in the bigger picture it doesn't matter. You might therefore think I think reading fiction is a waste of time...not so...if you enjoy reading fiction then it could never be said to be a waste of time. My wife said my empathy and EI is lacking sometimes and she believe that my unwillingness to read fiction contributes to this. I had to study English Literature at school and I absolutely hated it because we only ever read fiction. I consume books constantly but always non fiction.
I’m 54 years old and felt the same way for the last 29 years that I’ve been reading history biography business success etc. but I always felt a void , I was always in the low track English as it was called at school for the not so smart ones, I decided recently to read English literature & I’m loving it, I’m trying to catch up on all I’ve missed, since this my own choice and not school it is a wonderful pursuit, just recently read Dickens Great expectations which was great reading, I’ve also just read the shorter ones, Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm , All quiet on the western front to name a few, it’s worth it, believe me, once you seriously start it is worth every minute of your time!
I kind of understand this. I like reading, but it feels like a waste of time in the grand scheme of things to me. But, I just picked up a fiction for the first time in years. We’ll see if I make it past the first few pages lol.
@@kabutler70Dickens books are always too wordy where he uses 100 words when 10 words would have. I read Animal Farm at school and it was just so depressing. I'll stick to non fiction.
@@peterreed9566Sounds like you have a narrow bandwidth where it concerns variety in the content, so it makes sense you'd want to read nonfiction, which has a narrower expectation of the reader as far as style. I have to agree about wordiness--I don't think most people like that. You mentioned finding a book depressing. You can ask a librarian to recommend stories with happy or satisfying endings. You never know--you might find a series you love.
Some time ago, I was trying to examine if there was any benefit in reading fiction (since we all run to self-help books at least one in our lives for help). I came to the same conclusions as you but failed to find a synthesis of the ideas that were running through my mind… Glad there’s this video for anyone who has the same questions!

I disagree it's a waste of time. I can get all the things mentioned from fiction. And If I want fiction I'll watch a movie thanks. Just more efficient to be a more effective man in this world we live in.

Reading fiction before I go to sleep is also a great form of decompression as well.
Love this video. I think people put so much emphasis on self-help books when we can learn so much about life from reading fiction.
Man I absolutely love this content as an aspiring reader and psychologist in training. You deserve so many more subs

Not really. You obviously shouldn't be a fool, but I've realized I've learned the most back when I connected with people

The video is really great!
I started reading Game of thrones book
Good luck with it!
Fiction stimulates imagination and makes different synapses in the brain than the reality.
Love the editing 👌
Reading Friction books relaxes me ,if earlier i have non friction and hard book to understand

So does information from any other source, when utilised.

Love fiction but don't like Rowling's recent controversies. Although I MUST read more, I'm lazy.
Everytime i read, i dont remember a single word or what i read. Do you have any tips?
Read one passage and summarize it in a piece of paper

Watching fiction happens at a fixed pace (movies, tv, etc) whereas you control the pace as you read
What impact do you think controlling the pace has on a person?
