  • Here is our homemade upright bass banjo aka "The Thunderbucket". Made from an old marching bass drum. Apologies for the hideous intonation. Not a bass player so much.
    Made in Kansas
    **EDIT**
    A few folks have reached out about building their own. We never really had any plans for it but what I can remember went something like this:
    The neck and the bridge was made from a curtain valance. I believe it was maple. I cut it up, glued it, and routered the edges. The bridge was made from some scrap wood I'm not sure what it was. Held in place with the tension from the strings and some double sided tape. For strings we used regular old Weed Wacker wire and turnbuckles (at the bottom) for the tuners. Just know that because the strings are nylon they will take a while to stretch out. It took months before the Thunderbucket could hold a tuning for longer than a day or so. Also the headstock is the neck from an old broken fiddle we had around. It does nothing but hold the strings and look pretty.
    I you go to Winfield and wanna play this thing we camp with the Heavy Petting Zoo in the Pecan Grove. Come say hi. Tell em UA-cam sent you.

    Accidentally clicked on this video. I love this! The angled headstock appears to have the remaining part of the fretboard, and an actual pegbox at the end of it. That feature just cracks me up! 😆 but, it’s very unique and I’m inspired by it.

    I thought this up by myself today in my living room and then had to check if anyone else had the idea. And here it is. Exactly what I was imagining in my head. Bass drum bass. Bajobanjo. Whatever it is, good idea dude. I couldn’t have actually built one but at least someone could.

    Wow 11 years ago and it the first this has come up on my feed. That's Brilliant, I love it. I want to fashion a DIY
    Washtub Base, like my paternal grandmother played when I was a kid. I also love your pad.

    Are you sure this isn't a contrebanjo?

    Pretty cool!
    You'd probably get more resonance by moving the bridge closer towards the bottom of the drum head; having the bridge right in the middle of the drum head is likely dampening a lot of the resonance you would otherwise get from the drum head.

    Kick-ass instrument! And it sounds beautiful, albeit surprisingly close to the sound of a regular upright bass, and missing most of the frequency-modulation twang of other bass (and regular) banjos. Wonder why. Drum head tightened too tight maybe?

    • @nightlife9907
      @nightlife9907 5 років тому

      it's the spring coil tailpiece, must reduce tension on the bridge or something

    • @justinkashtock333
      @justinkashtock333 Рік тому

      The bridge is right in the middle of the drum head, which if you look at a banjo, the bridge is far off towards the end of the banjo head, not right in the middle. That's your major difference there.

    i think the drum could use something behind it to direct the sound energy towards the listener. ..nice build.

    • @justinkashtock333
      @justinkashtock333 Рік тому

      The bridge being right in the middle of the drum head is likely dampening much of the resonance and projection he'd get if he moved the bridge closer to the bottom of the drum head; if you look at a banjo, the bridge is not in the middle of the head but is far off to one side to allow the head to vibrate, which is what gives you the sound projection.
