The best piece of advice I ever got was to get as loose and numb as you can, and then get looser. I started trying to become too loose, just to see how far I could take it before it ruined my shot, and that's when I started getting real power and snap off the disc
The way I imagine it is like when you spin in an office chair and bring your legs in it speeds you up, and when you extend your legs the spinning slows down. Driving form is basically spinning in the chair 180 degrees. You start with your legs extended and then the power pocket is the speed gained from tucking everything in. Then you use the speed you gained from bringing your weight to center in the 'power pocket' and extend the arm, capturing the speed you made while tucked.
This is EXACTLY where I am at in my disc golf journey. After a gauntlet of tournaments I'm taking 2 months off and starting over with intense focus on step-by-step technique. It is so difficult, good luck Jonathan!! Here's to hoping we both come out better on the other side.
Definitely where I struggle the most, after almost 3 years, is trying to relax. My best shots are my slowest and most relaxed, but it is STILL totally counter intuitive. I try and focus on thinking of my hips rotating my shoulders and let my arm be as loose as possible, while still gripping the disc. Let’s get smooth and fast together everyone!🇸🇪🇨🇦
Saw a recent video from a finnish instructor who said "NO, PERKELE, DONT ROTATE, ONLY SHIFT WEIGHT TO FRONT LEG AND HIP" and it's actually a bunch easier. The rotation comes naturally and i dont have to think about it.
See I'm behind y'all. I don't think I've ever actually focused on my hips. Just all arms and shoulders. I definitely don't ever feel relaxed. This look like another hard addition to the game that's gonna be fun to learn.
Something I remember Tristan Tanner saying went something like "trying to go faster never results in better" when you're trying to learn a new movement. Slow down until it's correct and you don't have to think to do it correctly.
I love that Jonathanisms have leaking into my game. Now when I throw the disc well, I say “oh, it did the thing.” Thanks for helping me be able to “do the thing”.
The random dance off when 50 Cent came on was incredible. Thank you for this video! It touches on one of the bigger struggles in my drives and approaches, and gives me a way to work on it! I can't wait to try them!
I’ve never been able to find someone to explain it this way. I always ask “am I supposed to try real hard with arm” but no one can really answer. So this was super helpful. Explaining it to be more like a slingshot and where to do that is helpful. You guys are my favorite disc golf UA-cam channel. Very entertaining and educational!
Yep. Your arm is actually one of the least “used” muscles. Hips are working hard. Torso and shoulders are rotating hard. The arm can basically just be a noodle outside of the little bit of muscle involved in actually “aiming”
Thank you, Jonathan, Johannes and Lat64! Jonathan's humility and readiness to learn, combined with Johannes' straightforward instruction always seem to make those concepts in disc golf I struggle to learn easier to understand! I went to the park today and feel like I finally could get some power in my backhand throws from my lower body vs. my weak noodle arms. Keep these tips coming!
I came for the Scandi Death Metal, but stayed for the lessons. Seriously, this has helped me think differently and more consciously about how I throw frisbees. Thank you for this :)
You stay smooth when you are happy and don´t try too much! So have a fun! The disk just follow your body, not your hand! But yeah, it is hard! Last two weeks are first smooth throws for me for this summer... Same happened last year also at autumn... Maybe I should start my diskgolf season at may... no too gold. You see my problem... But getting relaxed takes time to get it right...
Great video Johannes & Jonathan! For all y'all who struggle with throwing smooth and using the power pocket - you can do it! For me, practicing standstills & runups SLOWLY in the kitchen we're what helped. Y'all got this.
You guys absolutely hit it (with a nail?) with this one. 👍👍 But no matter how much you tell this to yourself (and other people) the slowing down and relaxing your arm part is not easy. Good luck for everybody in learning and also remembering this when throwing the disc. I've been learning this sport about 7 years and I'm still too fast with my hand waaaay too often.🙃
There is so much going into a backhand throw (literally your entire body) to even put into a 9 min video its best to start from the ground up starting with footwork which is the foundation and working your way up. Great job guys
got my first order of discs ever from you this week, and just cant wait to trow them slowly now. those videos are so wholesome, the humour is always pure and there´s just no negativity. keep it up jonathan and the whole team
This is great. After years of playing wrong I started from scratch. It is very difficult to unlearn what I was doing. I’ve been doing much better, my distance has improved greatly. Unfortunately my scores haven’t but it’s only a matter of time. Jonathan and Johannes thank you so much. Love you guys!!!
I was out practicing with some putters this morning and was trying to focus on my throws as a whole body movement, a complete, fluid motion, not worrying about power or distance. By doing this and adjusting to a fan grip I feel I had a really useful session and it felt like each disc flew more true to their numbers and flight paths. My Runes flew straight and the Proxy and Stabilizer faded reliably as expected. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow with my mids. I’ve been learning and laughing a lot with the team and really appreciate what Lat64 and Jonathan have done with this series.
This is by far one of the best explaination, incl. the lovely :* slow mo's on where to focus. Never heard it that way. Gimme more ! Great work, as always Jonathan and Johannes !
holding your disc *really* loosely and going through the throwing motion like you do in your kitchen, then tightening your grip RIGHT at the end and letting the disc rip will help your body understand how to throw more relaxed.
Awesome video my man. I feel like I'm in the same boat as you are. Im starting my disc golf journey and I'm hooked and learning and developing my swing. So I feel everything you're going through. Some days it feels like it's coming together and some days not so much but I love your videos man and just watching the progression is awesome! Keep up the great content!
Amazing the many angles and points of view these videos bring to help one along with their game. Thanks, I will try this method of philosophy soon. Go Kristin!!
Going frame by frame in the last comparison, you can see that the front foot pivots as the disc passes over it, as opposed to the first throw where the front foot pivots several frames after the disc has left the hand. Great video!
Thank you so much for this video! It got me another 40-60ft of distance. I was trying to use my arm muscles instead of pulling through with my shoulder.
Thanks Jonathan. I feel the same thing you do. I do my runup with no disc and it feels good. Then, I go out and throw and it feels offand unnatural. I have been able to improve a bit, but I am definitely still rounding. I know to bring the disc into my chest and lead with triceps, but I just can't do it in practice. I will just keep at it. My timing is definitely getting better.
I still have a long journey to work on form, it has helped me to imagine driving with my shoulder, not my arm or hand. If you time the drive with your shoulder, it should sync with the rest of the power your lower body is producing. Imagine a horizontal string pulling your shoulder forward after the reach back. Just be as relaxed as a puppet and slow it down if need be. I have trouble with trying to rip through the disc after the pull back and It’s throwing the whole sync process off. Gonna have to try some field work at 20% power and just try and get into that power pocket flow. Also be conscience of leaning to forward or back. A good visual of a a hoola hoop around you.
I recently started working on this as I would muscle the disc, just loosening up my body and using more hips in a standing position I was throwing my mids 25" further the very first day lol. I got a lot of work to do as its now messed up my 3 step timing/speed but I think I'll finally be driving with mids vs fairways to get even more accuracy
Keep up the good work Jonathan! Disc golf is hard, which is why we love to play! I’ve been playing for like 10 years, and just now able to consistently thrown nose down lol. You’re picking it up way faster and don’t get discouraged! 🙏😄
Nice one, timely, been trying to work on my form after being stuck on the same distances, sore shoulder, inconsistency. Been thinking about my old baseball swings, snapping with speed not force. The force brain takes control more than I desire !
Looks like you are doing great to me. I'd love to see you try some of the more unique styles like Matt Orum. I'm always trying different techniques to see if i can make improvements. Keep up the great work!
Regarding "Soft kittens". I have a keychain with a fluffy unicorn on my discgolf bag that hangs there to remind me to keep it slow and smooth and not being too stiff/jerky. Maybe find a keychain with a kitten and hang it on your bag to help you with that mindset Jonathan :o).
I’m fairly new to disc golf and this is presently my favourite video lesson. Highlights are at 1:03 and 9:06, both are better at .25x playback speed. 😅
Keep up the hard work, Ive seen soo much improvement in your skills from when you first started, even before the improvements from the side by side in this video alone... I've also noticed that you seem to enjoy playing now far more than you ever did in the beginning!!
I would definitely recommend you to try transferring the weight from the back leg to the front. But focus on being low on your feet, hips staying on the same level through the whole run up. Hopefully it helps :D
Love Johannes Slow mo. Made me laugh. The Oh, That was so good comment. Killed me. It definitely takes time to learn your throw. The run up. I am 2 years in playing disc golf. And I am always learning something new. Keep working at it. You will get better and see the improvement. And as Always. Buy Jonathan's signature Fuse!!
This works super well for me: During the run up, keep the x-step small and fast, then there’s a delay, and then you plant step. This extra half second that you buy yourself allows you to do some key things: lets all your joints catch up and hover in the right position, allows you to check your aim is true, and most importantly… RELAX. This way, as soon as your plant foot touches the ground you’re already positioned to snap everything forward
I really love these videos and the metal vibes. Add my band “ Poisoned Breath “ to a video and I’ll be forever grateful! Keep up with the amazing content.
I've watched this video when it came out but I just rewatched it cuz I'm really trying to find the power pocket that's what's holding me back I watched this video went to the field and within 10 throws found the power pocket and it feels glorious it's a little scary at first your arm can't do s*** but once you feel it and find it you're going to feel blessed so go try and thank you Johannes
a trick that has helped me be smooth is to throw the Champion max weight MAKO3 the reason is IF you throw this disc hard at all it will turn over and burn into the ground you basically have to throw it like youre trying to lay up a putter from 40 ft away very soft but let your run up and reach back add the distance not your strength so grab yourself a MAKO3 and try to smoothly throw it on flat angle nose down and it will GLIDE 275-300ft like a LAZER with zero fade and that tells you that you just threw it perfectly this disc is a form helping disc imo and i can throw my drivers with way more accuracy now!
Yeah, I met and played with a dude on the course that threw the Mako3 really well. I bought one and I feel like I'm turning it over a lot or burning it into a cut roller. It's 180 gram Champion plastic so I think that's max weight? I can't seem to throw it very well. I'll take it out to a field and give it a whirl. Good tip man.
Jonathan! Remember: Soft kittens, fluffy pillows! :D I am not smooth by any means, I am stiffer than a rusty old kylskåp. Watching you is an inspiration, keep it up!
I think something that may help is to think you're not actually pushing and pulling your hand/disc. You're rotating your shoulders on axis. So more power means rotating the shoulders more before rotating them back. Your hand is a trebuchet. The further you push the spring down, (Rotating your shoulders back) the farther you can project the rock (the faster your can rotate and snap the disc out of you hsnd)
I very recently had a breakthrough with the wrist. Even if I time my reach back with the last step I don't get the timing just right unless I also extend the wrist and let it curl during the throw. Something worth playing around with, we are all different in terms of levers and the wrist position can add just a little bit of lag.
I second thee salute to the Devo reference. And am now picturing a montage of some epic disc golf throws with the song playing in the background and possibly some updated more disc-related lyrics.
I think you should talk to the leaders of the latitude so we can get the your fuse as a standard stock release :) i didnt get to buy one and really wants it! hope you are releasing it again. big love!
In order to putt more smoothly, I consciously try to begin my forward motion slow and gradually increase the speed through release. Maybe applying that to your full throws might help? Thanks for the always great videos!!
I think what you said at the end is 100% true, slow things down and you might just end up adding alot of distance to your throws. A slow, but smooth and well timed throw will still net more distance than a fast, but sloppy run-up. even if you look at some of the pro's like Tristan Tanner who played amazing now at worlds what you can see is that he's pretty much just walking through his "run-up" but he's still one of the furthest throwing players out there and he would probably smoke James Conrad in a distance competition, even through JC has one of the fastest run-ups in the game...
Good vid! Been through this, too, but I have corrected it. Now I throw straight and far. Also hyzers and anhyzers got way more accurate. If the upper body is not turned enough and early enough, the shoulder has to work to correct the direction. Also the energy does not properly get transfered from the hips to the shoulders, making a power compensation with the arm. That results in an arm throw and stiffness. Turning properly leaves the shoulder out of the equation completely, because using it would make you throw some 45 degrees to the right. However, I don't think "you are water" is a good enough advice. 😄 So how to turn correctly? Learn to use the non-throwing hand correctly. Slinging it down and forward will turn the shoulders and the whole body with it. This transfers the energy properly from the hips to the shoulders in a manner where nothing gets left behind. The sling happens right after the right foot has planted and just before turning for the throw. Hard to explain but the point is that it happens a little earlier than one might expect. Experimenting too early and late will result in a sense of the proper timing. Please note that a proper weight transfer and hip turn is necessary precursor for this. This was shown well in the video in my opinion with the single step drill. Weight transfer (feet) -> Hip turn (hips) -> Left arm sling to turn shoulders (shoulders) -> Slap to 10 o'clock (wrist) Hope this helps 😊
Probably one of my biggest problems. My power is massively lacking and I always blame it on being a tiny person. I'll practice this and see how far it takes me lol
Find some nice stuff and general good feelings here ❤🤘

The best piece of advice I ever got was to get as loose and numb as you can, and then get looser. I started trying to become too loose, just to see how far I could take it before it ruined my shot, and that's when I started getting real power and snap off the disc
Im not much of a smooth discgolf person but my friends tell me I have a smooth brain, so atleast I have that going for me.
😂😂
Underrated joke here

It's 180 gram Champion plastic so I think that's max weight? I can't seem to throw it very well. I'll take it out to a field and give it a whirl. Good tip man.
I don't even come here for the discgolf content anymore, just the entertainment. Content is great too though :)
❤
I'm going to try this. Played for the first time Saturday... nobody accused me of being slingshotty or smooth. Thanks for the instruction.
Love this video!!! You guys are awesome. 😎
I very recently had a breakthrough with the wrist. Even if I time my reach back with the last step I don't get the timing just right unless I also extend the wrist and let it curl during the throw. Something worth playing around with, we are all different in terms of levers and the wrist position can add just a little bit of lag.
You need to try the Twirly Bird! Think it’d really help you loosen up.
Nice Devo reference ! Even to this day, I have the lyrics to that song totally memorized. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing......
I second thee salute to the Devo reference. And am now picturing a montage of some epic disc golf throws with the song playing in the background and possibly some updated more disc-related lyrics.
I think you should talk to the leaders of the latitude so we can get the your fuse as a standard stock release :) i didnt get to buy one and really wants it! hope you are releasing it again. big love!
I love these two
Stop it yoouuuuu 😍😍
Thanks for the tips, you guys are so cool!
I’ll be working on this hopefully I can get loose
Yeah I agree with this. I´ve also started to look at Linus Carlssons throw. It´s just smooth and controlled =)
Wow awesome improvement already. Time to hit the field
Great video. You two crack me up.
So how to turn correctly? Learn to use the non-throwing hand correctly. Slinging it down and forward will turn the shoulders and the whole body with it. This transfers the energy properly from the hips to the shoulders in a manner where nothing gets left behind.
The sling happens right after the right foot has planted and just before turning for the throw. Hard to explain but the point is that it happens a little earlier than one might expect. Experimenting too early and late will result in a sense of the proper timing.
Please note that a proper weight transfer and hip turn is necessary precursor for this. This was shown well in the video in my opinion with the single step drill.
Weight transfer (feet) -> Hip turn (hips) -> Left arm sling to turn shoulders (shoulders) -> Slap to 10 o'clock (wrist)
Hope this helps 😊
Probably one of my biggest problems. My power is massively lacking and I always blame it on being a tiny person. I'll practice this and see how far it takes me lol
Now that Jonathan has been playing for a while, it would be awesome to get an updated "What's in the bag" for Jonathan.
