Being an old mechanic on disability now (was in the repair business for 30 years) I depend on UA-cam for information about what I'm looking at for a job. It's a breath of fresh air that I didn't have to listen to the story of your life, or your current dilemma, and you got to the point. You covered the system very well and in the order I would have taken. I swear by the logic probe, and believe it to be an essential tool. Thank you for the video, and the way you presented it!
I just bought a 2012 Tundra 5.7 with 76k miles on it. So far I love the truck and I hope I don't have this problem, but now I know where to look if it becomes an issue. I do have a power probe as well.
Thanks for this video. Saved me lots of digging in. Had a large spark when jumping the car. Thought I fried a fusible link. Pulling the starter relay showed that it's probably the starter.
Thank you. Saved me some time. I used a 12V to power up the starter via fuse box. Turned over. Was about to pull remanned starter I installed a few weeks back. Ended up being a fuse that was working off and on. Wiggle it and it wouldn't start.
Great video! No idle chatter, just good information and well presented. Found your video while searching for a solution of a similar problem with my Tundra.....it was also mice moving into the fuse box, Thank you!
Thanks for great video, now if I can just figure out why my 08 Tundra starter sounds different every time I start it, sometimes it sounds like it wants to keep cranking, sometimes it sounds like starter drive is stuck in flywheel and sometimes it starts ok, but I still learned lots of the wiring part from you, thanks.
Great video. Going to try some of this tomorrow. I sure hope it isn't my starter. Replacing it on a Tundra (or in my case, Sequoia) is one of the worst jobs on these engines from what I've seen.
Another thing to check would be are you making good connections through your relay switch I had a relay switch where when it was really cold it wouldn't make connection because of the expanding and Contracting of the metals
First thank you for your help in understanding the starter circuit. My problem is quite different but it helps me understand how this starting sequence works. Mine is a condition where it won’t stop cranking, once it hits the ON position, I have to pull the start relay to make it stop. I’ve uploaded a video recently. It’s driving me crazy! Anyway thanks for the upload it helps guys like me try to figure this thing out..
What about the camshaft position sensors? Could that be a problem? Scanned with Obd II, threw the P0335, P0340, P0345, P0365, and P0390. If keep turnin the key to the off position then on and wait for the radio to come on slowly turn the key and with varying tension on the key it will eventually start. Changed the ignition switch and the Tumbler no change…. Help
Working through the same set of codes now. (08 sequoia 5.7 2wd) Swapped out the starter because only one click when turning the ignition. Fiddled around with the relay cube and now it gets a lot of clicks. I like this approach to troubleshoot and will try it with a fresh battery.
Would you be able to tell me exactly which of the four slots I could use a jumper wire to test this? The fuse itself doesn’t tell you which prongs are which.
With the relay slightly pulled out can I just use a jumper wire and jump the two or is it only possible with a test probe or a 12v source coming from the battery too? I jumped a wire from the right top corner and the back most post standing from the fender side and all I got was a click. Assuming my starter is toast. Battery tested good but it’s over 5 I think… thanks
This helps, I'm having this exact issue in an 06 4runner but also my ECU seems to be not communicating to my scanner thru the OBD port. I think my ECU is not getting power possibly
Good video I check all that on my Toyota and hast signal to replay n power to fuse .... but the power isn't 12v any idea what could be causing it ... battery is fully charged relays are good fuses r good
Good probing examples to learn by, thanks. Was that truck parked for awhile? We know mice / other rodents love to nest and diner in parked vehicles. One of my neighbors inherited his dad's Checker Marathon, Yellow Cab. It was undriven for years and you guessed it. He has a project but he loves it.
I didn't get a chance to ask him if the car was sitting. Checker cabs are pretty awesome. Sounds like a fun project. A lot less wiring to mess with it at least. The bundles of wires in new vehicles are overwhelming.
Can I bring my tundra to you? It won't start it. It's not getting fuel. Replaced fuel pump fuel pump ecu checked all relays replaced ecm. I don't know what else to do.
I like your troubleshooting technique. Very informative! 👏 Can you help me on my fog lights problem with circuitry. I installed an aftermarket fog lights for my 2011 Tundra (base model) and cannot make it come on using or grounding J4, #2 pin (light blue wire) using an aftermarket switch. I notice that I’m not getting 12V on connectors. I don’t know how to trace/check it back to the relay connection box (where the relay is connected or placed). I’m not electronic savvy. I would appreciate if provide some guidance.
I have a similar issue with my 2014 5.7 tundra. But slowly over time my D for drive would disappear. Changed the range sensor and now it's gone and it starts super intermittent. Takes like 10 tries to get it to catch. No cruise control either and can't use sequential shifting. I'm stumped and most techs I've talked to are stumped.
Hey, quick question. I don't have a wiring diagram but I don't have power on my ignition switch. I'm only getting power on the blue wire. Any help is pointing me in the right direction is greatly appreciated
This is an amazing video. I have a similar problem in my 08 tundra. I have an odd static sound under the hood and when I bridge the starter relay post it stops but if I remove the bridge it continues. So I think that I am going to run a wide from the s post on the starter to a switch than the battery with a 30 amp inline fuse . Is this a bad idea? I did a quick mock up and It operates the starter that I have not reinstalled yet. I just ran cables to it. But afterwards when the key is in the dashboard lights up fire. But when you turn the key further the dashboard go's off 🤦. If you have the time I would love to hear your thoughts. I think I watched this video 15 times.
@Aldo Anaya well I had no luck tracking down the electric debacle. However I am up and running now I clipped the "s" starter wire cnd caped it off and ran a new wire to a $6.00 push button start then on to a 30 amp in-line fuse then straight to the positive post on the battery along with a new starter and she works great. I still wish I knew what the real reason for this issue is but not enough to hand over my hard earned cash to Toyota HA.
I have the 2011 V8 DC tundra with 99,000 miles on it and I have the same problem but when I keep on trying to start it, the truck started. I brought my truck to the dealership and they found nothing wrong with it. So I am just waiting for the issue to worsen so it could be properly diagnosed😬. Great video by the way and atleast I know where to look when it does happen again. Maybe a new Jeep Gladiator or Ram will be nice. 😃
I have the same problem with my 2014 tundra but mine is blowing the fuse st 30A that send power to the relay. I put a new fuse and the truck start but it keeps blowing it
That's a fun case study. I almost spilled my coffee when you powered the starter motor directly from your Powerprobe. My probe has a 10A circuit breaker, and that circuit typically draws >200A. I had to laugh at how your scan tool was misleading, actually increasing your work flow. I wish manufacturers would offer more info on these data pids to help understand results. Do you know what the purpose of that starting diode is? Is it there to protect the electronics of the key switch from inductive spikes or ghost voltage coming from the relay?
Has anyone seen an anti theft system which requires the left turn signal or flasher to be turrned on before it will start? I am experiencing a no crank situation but i don't know if it might be that or something else.
Gotta love the mice and rats. They love the wires after they were dipped in soy or peanut oil to cool the plastic surrounding the wires. I heard Honda was able to get their class action lawsuit thrown out but people are still fighting with Toyota. A person from work just bought a new 2020 Prius and the mice did $6,800 damage in one weekend. I know they got both my Honda and a Toyota in one weekend.. I purchase some of Honda's "pepper" electrical tape hope that solves the problem. Any one else have a solution to this problem?
I had no idea that they get in oil to cool them. Guess that makes sense why rodents like the wires. I think a pretty good solution is having an outdoor cat. My cat turbo takes care of any mice or Rats on the property. He's always on the prowl
Mice chew through wires because their teeth are constantly growing, so they have to chew on something to stop their teeth from growing into their skull, they don't actually eat the wires because they like the taste. They like wires because of the convenient shape being easy to fit in their mouth and there being plenty of them.
2007 Toyota tundra 3UR-FE starter have stater relay sound but no start but if jump st relay start and put it back it auto stop engine 😂 I have no idea , if try to start engine by key maybe 10 times it normal start😂
I didn't get a chance to ask him if it was sitting for any period Of time. I would say it's not that common in my area to get mice chewing up wires but it does happen. Definitely very common if the vehicle is stored in a barn or garage
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow haha I had you look at that 2 years ago and you said its coming from everywhere its old it'll keep everything lubricated dont worry about it. I had the oil pan gasket replaced 2x I thought that was the problem

Enjoyed your way of diag the no start. Appreciated the video and the time in making it.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback man.
Bravo my dude. Excellent video, helped me diagnose my starter. Need a new one.

very thorough and thoughtful mechanic. Good work. Id use you if you were in my area.
Thank you for the info and your time😊my 2008 tundra no no crank at all. Replace with new new battery still
Looking back is ok but you’re still going to go with the flow and the experience you have 😊

Very helpful, even though my '07 Tundra doesn't have any start problems. I'll know what to expect if it ever conks out.
After proper diagnostics...we go back to looking for broken/chewed wires😃. Been there..done that👍
