Yes at approaching 63 yrs just got my first "Ukulele", no more motorbikes. So far just the sound of a wailing banshee crossed with a strangled cat. I have been checking out a lot of tutorials and enjoying, this seems the best so far for strumming tuition, many thanks.
+Roger Scott LMAO!!! Thank you so much...I picked up my very first ukulele today...and pretty much sound like you've just described! Good to know I'm not the only one ;)
Pat Murphy I love your comment Pat! I completely agree that this is an excellent tutorial, thank you Brett! and that it's never too late to learn. Thank you for the inspiration
I had NO IDEA that strumming could be so complicated...thank you so very much for sharing your gift with others...I always thought I had a good sense of rhythm until I tried strumming...wow what an eye opener.... I am really enjoying your tutorials they are great...and you are a great instructor....
I’ve watched so many videos already and this is the only one that’s made me feel like I can actually do this and I actually know the strumming patterns a little now! He’s very good at teaching !
Chris Speak Amazing video! It's essential to all especially the advice about is beginners guide to playing the ukulele. The help things i also found for how to play the eddie vedder ukulele songs was Panlarko Amazing Uke Planner - search google if you want.
Hi Jim, as robbedace mentioned, there a variety of ways to strum the ukulele. To start, I recommend strumming down with the nail-side of your index finger and up with the flesh side of your index finger. Alternatively, you might strum down with the nail-side of your middle and ring fingers and up with the flesh side of your index finger.
this video would of been perfect if there was a close up on the finger as it is strumming. like detailed instructions on how the finger tips placements and or strength on the strings needed
I had to cut my nails on my fretting hand (the one on the neck) because I've found it easier to press down on the strings with the tip of my finger (underneath the nail but above the pad of the finger), and my nails prevented me from doing that when they were long
I second the request for close-up on the finger as it strums. It's not clear whether you're strumming with the thumb or the fingers and/or whether it changes with down stroke to up stroke.
This is a fantastic video, so helpful! You are a great instructor, thank you so much. I was having trouble with my strumming, but this is really clear and concise.
Thank you so much for working at a beginner's pace. So far, most of the beginner ukulele videos available on UA-cam were truly going too fast. You are an excellent instructor!
This is an amazing lesson to learn different strumming patterns for beginners. I am still working on fifth pattern, almost there but need to practice more. Thanks, Mohan Joshi Houston Texas.
I'm so excited because it didn't sound as bad as I thought it would! I love my little ukelele so much I really wanna learn how to play. Thank you for the video you're such a sweet teacher. God bless you
I know this video is almost 6 years old. but I have to say its one of the best strumming pattern walkthru especially WITH the worksheet. I really do appreciate it and Thank You for the little tutorial.
Perfect lesson, you are such a good teacher....calm and no hype. It really was easy following your lesson... I've searched for the right teacher and you are HE!
I've just started playing the uke as part of my bachelor of ed degree and I'm really loving it. Your videos are fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
OK Brett - thanks for all the clear & sensible advice on strumming. Your patience and enthusiasm make you a great teacher. I'm just about ready to get my first ukulele (can't wait!!) and these exercises are the very thing I'll need to get a good start.
Aloha from Hawai'i! Mahalo for your tutorial...every bit helps to make playing the Ooo-ku-lele, Hawaiian pronunciation, jumping flea...mo beddah...a hui hou malama ke kanikapila
I like how this guy knew just how bad I am at strumming. Lots of other videos kind of assume a basic degree of competence. This man didn't judge me for my true lack of talent
You are the cutest creature. The video is a little slow for folks with ADHD, but so well laid out and patient for beginners who might be feeling lost or frustrated without it. Thanks so much for posting this! What a huge help! (I was practicing with you, in the air, because my Uke hasn't arrived yet)
It's just practice. I'm still having trouble. Sometimes I'm ok other times my fingers catch on the strings. I think the main thing is to keep your wrist relaxed.
Practice and find the way of strumming that suits you best. For me using my whole hand makes me do that but just using my thumb or pointer is a lot easier and effective.
Okay! That confirms it. I have been trying to find the "right way" to strum, but what I've seen from various videos and what you wrote above, is that not only do different people do it different ways, but each person may use a different finger/position for strumming depending on the context.
thank you soo much! got so much struggle not memorizing chords, but on my strumming skills. thank you! this is so helpful for beginners like me. Godbless
I always end up strumming one string too hard or missing out on one. And my ring finger is starting to hurt. I know I don't have to press hard, to get a C, but I have to hold the ukulele up somehow and it's almost impossible to do that just by the thumb.
I'm only learning the uke but I'm pretty good at guitar and if stuff starts to hurt, keep going, It must be pretty bad for me , playing with my blisters and raw skin but it's made me a better player so far
Hi Alec, I like to use the nail side of my ring or middle fingers for down strums and the side or nail side of my thumb for up strums. Sounds similar to you. For some patterns, I'll opt to use just a loose and relaxed index finger.
This strumming tutorial is the best and helped me the most. The counting out of the beats is a winning technique to master the rhythm of the down up strokes I didn't find this on any of the other videos. well done.
I learned something new from this video! Thanks! Just purchased a ukulele for my youngest nephew and I'm taking my 50 year old ukulele off the shelf to join him in the enjoyment of making some music!
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to learn about how to learn to play the ukulele try Basarto Ukulele Blueprint (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got great results with it.
Thank you for going at a speed I could handle! Yes this is slow, but I'm new and needed it so slow! I'll practise more if I can do it. By the 5th pattern, my thumb had a mind of it's own, but I love it.
Thanks Bret. Great beginner tutorial. Easy to follow and count along with which made it all that much easier to grasp. Why other teachers? say "here are fifteen (15) strumming patterns for beginners" I will never know. It just adds to the confusion. 5 for the beginner is enough for my 70 year old brain. Thank you young man!
Do not use a pick! First, you can scratch up your uke with a pick. But also, it's just a crutch. You have to learn how to strum without it at some point. It's better to start from the beginning than to have to learn how later on. Strumming is hard. Just keep practicing and trying different things to find what works for you.
old but good. been practicing the uklele for a while now and have watched at least one thousand videos and tutorials. yet this has been more informative and helpful than any of which I learned from.
I actually appreciate that he does that. Sorry, but some of us actually have no idea how to play instruments to save our lives. It's nice to see someone who doesn't talk fast, so people like me, who get frustrated easily, can actually play along too, and learn something.
I cant keep the 4 count I don't know why! I get too hyper and start counting fast and every where like I cannot chill. Can someone link me to a video that plays 4 ticks over and over or something because I need it implanted into my head.
+Oshi Webb I thought I was doing an okay job of it, but my friend who is a professional musician was just shaking his head at me. Apparently I speed up as I go, too. :-( Anyway, he had me put a metronome app on my phone, and it's really helped me.
Been struggling with strumming, got 3 chords C G7 and F after hours of practice but strumming terrible, so really helpful thanks a lot. Now hours of practicing this, I am kicking 70 and this is as far as I have got....doh!
If you get too used to a felt pick though you'll have problems trying to use more fingers when you want to fingerpick (like the banjo). I have really thin, brittle nails too. So I'm trying to figure this one out as well.
I am so happy I found this site! ==> eyoutube.info/rocketukulele I don’t believe this at first because I always find music lessons are boring but if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have made my parents proud of me. I need this so bad because my nails are making this harder for me

This is a fantastic video, so helpful! You are a great instructor, thank you so much. I was having trouble with my strumming, but this is really clear and concise.
Trying to learn so that I can teach my 5yr old Grand daughter..You have a nice clear easy way of teaching. Thank you ,x
Thank you so much for working at a beginner's pace. So far, most of the beginner ukulele videos available on UA-cam were truly going too fast. You are an excellent instructor!
This is one of the first videos I started watching 5 years ago when I started the ukulele. Thanks.
Aw, that's amazing Mr. B! Congrats on all the progress you've made over the years. It's great to be apart of your journey.
This is an amazing lesson to learn different strumming patterns for beginners. I am still working on fifth pattern, almost there but need to practice more.
Thanks,

Thanks Brett, for taking the time to make the video.

Probably the best channel for uke beginners
Thank you! You are obviously a born teacher. That was incredibly clear and easy to understand. Very appreciative. :-)
This was a lot of help. Thank you. I'll probably watch this video A LOT of times before I have it down. No pun intended.

This strumming tutorial is the best and helped me the most. The counting out of the beats is a winning technique to master the rhythm of the down up strokes I didn't find this on any of the other videos. well done.
Is the ukelele easier to play if I knew how to play the guitar?
Yeah, it's pretty similar. Once you learn the fairly simple chord shapes it'll feel like playing a toy guitar.
mechanical movements are useful, but the logic behind the ukulele works in a completely different way

I can't strum. How shall my fingers be when strumming? UgH
Ida Beyerholm i just use a pick
Do not use a pick! First, you can scratch up your uke with a pick. But also, it's just a crutch. You have to learn how to strum without it at some point. It's better to start from the beginning than to have to learn how later on. Strumming is hard. Just keep practicing and trying different things to find what works for you.
Ida Beyerholm I kinda use all of my fingers (if that makes sense). Maybe it's easier for me because I play the guitar. 😅
Hey Brekker! Yeah it may be. I'll just keep practising. C: Maybe I should take some lessons
Queen Rexy actually, you can use a pick. As long as it's a felt one (they make picks specifically for ukulele's) :)

Just because we all need to learn how to strum doesn't mean you need to talk like we're 5 years old and barely understand English hahah
I actually appreciate that he does that. Sorry, but some of us actually have no idea how to play instruments to save our lives. It's nice to see someone who doesn't talk fast, so people like me, who get frustrated easily, can actually play along too, and learn something.
We'll you look nice in your picture if that accounts for anything.
Alexis Reynolds Well you look nice in your picture if that means anything.
We just have to be grateful that someone is teaching us how to play

I cant keep the 4 count I don't know why! I get too hyper and start counting fast and every where like I cannot chill. Can someone link me to a video that plays 4 ticks over and over or something because I need it implanted into my head.
Listen to songs and count "1,2,3,4" with the beats in the songs with all the songs you listen to! This might help you stay on beat
+Oshi Webb I thought I was doing an okay job of it, but my friend who is a professional musician was just shaking his head at me. Apparently I speed up as I go, too. :-( Anyway, he had me put a metronome app on my phone, and it's really helped me.

so helpful for someone who didn't have a clue what a strumming pattern even was really, than you!
Been struggling with strumming, got 3 chords C G7 and F after hours of practice but strumming terrible, so really helpful thanks a lot. Now hours of practicing this, I am kicking 70 and this is as far as I have got....doh!
Please make more of hese great simple videos! It really helps! Everyone else's are too complicated!
How the hell do I strum?Do I bang my head against the neck or something? My nails are too short
Use a guitar pick or a thin coin
A felt plectrum is good on nylon strings, I find.
If you get too used to a felt pick though you'll have problems trying to use more fingers when you want to fingerpick (like the banjo). I have really thin, brittle nails too. So I'm trying to figure this one out as well.
I actually had to cut my nails short to strum...
