  • @UkuleleTricks
    @UkuleleTricks  11 років тому +25

    Hi Jim, as robbedace mentioned, there a variety of ways to strum the ukulele. To start, I recommend strumming down with the nail-side of your index finger and up with the flesh side of your index finger. Alternatively, you might strum down with the nail-side of your middle and ring fingers and up with the flesh side of your index finger.

  • @dailodai9586

    this video would of been perfect if there was a close up on the finger as it is strumming. like detailed instructions on how the finger tips placements and or strength on the strings
    needed

    • @lnnc3860
      @lnnc3860 4 роки тому +3

      I need this so bad because my nails are making this harder for me

    • @tripulet
      @tripulet 4 роки тому +3

      I had to cut my nails on my fretting hand (the one on the neck) because I've found it easier to press down on the strings with the tip of my finger (underneath the nail but above the pad of the finger), and my nails prevented me from doing that when they were long

    • @sdingsor1
      @sdingsor1 3 роки тому +1

      I second the request for close-up on the finger as it strums. It's not clear whether you're strumming with the thumb or the fingers and/or whether it changes with down stroke to up stroke.

    Okay! That confirms it. I have been trying to find the "right way" to strum, but what I've seen from various videos and what you wrote above, is that not only do different people do it different ways, but each person may use a different finger/position for strumming depending on the context.

    Thanks Bret. Great beginner tutorial. Easy to follow and count along with which made it all that much easier to grasp. Why other teachers? say "here are fifteen (15) strumming patterns for beginners" I will never know. It just adds to the confusion. 5 for the beginner is enough for my 70 year old brain. Thank you young man!

      Ida Beyerholm i just use a pick

    • @QueenRexy
      @QueenRexy 7 років тому +5

      Do not use a pick! First, you can scratch up your uke with a pick. But also, it's just a crutch. You have to learn how to strum without it at some point. It's better to start from the beginning than to have to learn how later on. Strumming is hard. Just keep practicing and trying different things to find what works for you.

      Ida Beyerholm I kinda use all of my fingers (if that makes sense). Maybe it's easier for me because I play the guitar. 😅

      Queen Rexy actually, you can use a pick. As long as it's a felt one (they make picks specifically for ukulele's) :)

    Just because we all need to learn how to strum doesn't mean you need to talk like we're 5 years old and barely understand English hahah

      I actually appreciate that he does that. Sorry, but some of us actually have no idea how to play instruments to save our lives. It's nice to see someone who doesn't talk fast, so people like me, who get frustrated easily, can actually play along too, and learn something.

      +Oshi Webb I thought I was doing an okay job of it, but my friend who is a professional musician was just shaking his head at me. Apparently I speed up as I go, too. :-( Anyway, he had me put a metronome app on my phone, and it's really helped me.

    • @mugsyg237

      If you get too used to a felt pick though you'll have problems trying to use more fingers when you want to fingerpick (like the banjo). I have really thin, brittle nails too. So I'm trying to figure this one out as well.
