On the function of the blade, you've also got to keep in mind it isn't only a sword. The Crucible is also used to kill and keep dead massive, immortal demons like Titans and the Icon of Sin.
It does this by, after being stabbed into the demon, spreading out some sort of seal across the body which keeps it functionally dead so long as the blade remains inside the demon, in which case you want to keep the sword inside the demon and make it as hard to remove as possible (even Doomguy didn't rip the blade out, merely removed his crucible and presumably deliberately dismissing the blade as removing the handle doesn't cause the energy blade to disappear in the Icon of Sin).
Viewed this way, the extra spikes on the blade at the end and in the middle could serve a similar purpose to say the barbs on an arrow, digging into the flesh of the demon and making it harder for the blade to be removed, either from just falling out as the massive demon collapses or resisting deliberate removal by enemies trying to resurrect the demon.
Which is all really impressive because now you've got an actually effective energy sword (which from the appearance of the thing is shocking, never would have guessed), an effective immortal sealing weapon plus it looks absolutely badass, all at once. Talk about multitasking. Damn, what a weapon.
It's like the binding sutras that Buddhist and shinto exorcists are seen using... Except instead of sticking a piece of paper to the demon's forehead, he jams it in like the sadistic bastard child of a fishhook and a box-cutter and snaps it off inside them.

For the weight portion: the blade itself is argent energy, a sort of superheated plasma that defies previous laws of physics on other forms of plasma. It's stable at higher than thought possible temperatures and can energize objects it comes into contact with so it could be like a lightsaber in terms of "nothing really can resist it so it cuts through anything." You also have to consider Doomguy's own strength. Demons in lore have insanely tough bodies due to their muscles and skeletons but Doomguy can easily rip them apart with his bare hands. His own body defies physics as super powerful demons like Barons of Hell have a tough time ripping him apart as well (in Doom 2016 you can see on certain death screens that the Barons struggle to pull apart Doomguy's body). Considering he can decapitate a priest with just one hand by squeezing hard enough it's safe to say any additional weight on the blade won't make too much of a difference for him.
@Noah Rivera the l o r e is very vague on that. I've heard he literally can't die because if he did he'd just end up in Hell so since his soul isn't claimed it goes back into his body. I've heard the Seraphims blessed him so when he does die he just respawns like in the games. He had super strength and all even before the suit. Idk
@Noah Rivera kinda. I've seen the cutscenes. Havent played the game yet
The lore is quite vague, but the Doom Slayer was gifted the power of a God. Inhuman strength, speed, and reflexes. And, he is immortal. As long as he kills, he cannot die, due to the Praetor Suit's canon ability where he absorbs health after killing demons. Not to mention, it is stated that the Praetor Suit is so powerful, it can't be harmed by non-Argent weapons. Which is why the demons can harm him as their veins flow with Argent Energy.
I’m pretty sure he was talking about the swords design in real world metal applications. Never mind I’m wrong.
I don’t believe the demons can actually rip him apart. Cause many developers in different games downplay the true strength in gameplay. Like Kratos being demigod killing other gods still has to take his time with fodder enemy’s. Cause doom guy can rip anything with his hands but uses guns so he can kill demons at a distance and rip and tearing them up close. He was able to take their attacks without being blessed and when he did Hell and heaven shit theirselves. They most likely added those brutal death scenes just for entertainment purposes

The little “pickaxe” on the end of the blade always struck me as an interesting design choice. Aside from the fact that a spike like that would be good for puncturing armor, it adds more mass to the end of the blade and make it better for chopping. Granted, it wouldn’t make much difference since the blade is made of solidified hell magic, which like you say is probably pretty light, but I think it could be a theoretically viable design for a sword made of heavier materials.

There is another reason for the tip being hooked like it is. Remember that these swords are meant to be used against the Demonic Titans, which can only be sealed by snapping the blade off while it is embedded on the Titan. Those hooks can help to keep the blade embedded in these massive creatures, and so the handle can be removed with more ease.

Shad: so basically, you're fucked
Demons: -_- we already knew that.
"Or it's a key all the time.
And when you stick it in people...
It unlocks their death..."
Well we have seen that Crucible blade doesnt go through Titans like piss would go through snow, it actually sticks inside their flesh, meaning that the energy is not allmighty, still needs a solid swing force to cut things that are tough enough to withstand it.
Come to think of it, that might be the primary function of those "side spikes" at the tip. The blade needs to be left inside the titans in order to keep them down permanently, so the side spikes would act like barbs to keep the blade securely in there.
ı mean ... its used by DOOMGUY soooo
When the Slayer uses the Sword againts Doom Hunters, they don't die on a single attack. Maybe is for their (presumably) argent-based shields, but the point is that they cannot be cuted that easily.
So, there's an example.
Still managed to kill the Titan though
Also can’t cut a Marauders shield. Probably cause they are made of the exact same energy.
One thing on the material of the blade:
In Exultia's hell part, you activate Mech pieces to traverse the level. One of them is a GIANT Argent spear, and you can walk on it without getting burned or damaged. I think the "physical" state of the Argent weaponry does exist, but it seems to be paper thin. Like a thin layer of energy, making it really easy to cut through stuff (though it requires power).
I found that a neat thing, as it means you can also make shields of it. Lo and behold what the Marauders use against you...
If we do get a threequel in this series of Doom games, I think a new gimmick where you can switch your armblade between a steel blade and launchable Argent Energy knives would be fucking awesome. Maybe there'd be a mechanic where some enemies are too large to kill with your metal blade (Tyrant, Mancubus, Archville) and you'll have to launch argent energy knives at them.
@@zzeroara9511 One problem, nothing can be too big, this is a power phantasy, and you have to be careful where you tell the player "No, you can't". Final boss like the icon is obviously fine for being too big, but non boss enemies, not a chance, they will die at the Slayer's hands, let alone his blade.
Don´t forget, that the argentblades you activate als MELT demon flesh out of your way, so the edge is definetly something like plasma.
@@zzeroara9511 Why would you need throwing knives when you have a shit ton of guns? Then giving a kind of throwing-transformation for the cruscible would make more sense. Similar to how you unlock the Unmaykr to switch between it and bfg. Like detaching the blade for all charges to shoot of a disc of death to kill enemies in the distance and anything in the way.
Seems similar to the hardlight technology in the Halo Franchise. The forerunners make bridges and shields out of it.
"It's terribly well balanced."
"Well, if it's too balanced you lose power on the swing."

Also, who would've thought that a sword meant to double-down on "Rule of Cool" could ALSO be designed SO SMARTLY! I love it!
But what has been forgotten, the main purpose of the crucible is to “kill” Titans, since it’s blade is what freezes them since they cannot die, and the top spikes of the blade have the benefit of hooking the blade into the Titan demons, making it harder to remove, which is to make sure that the Titans are well not gonna get back up.

>He calls Doomguy a "regular person"
Though to be fair, there's no such thing as a "regular" extinction event.
In the game im pretty sure they confirm doomguy was able to kill whole titans buck naked and this was before he was blessed by the Seraphim and even before the Praetor armor was given to him by the Wretch.
So yeah, he was still a badass as "a normal guy"
@@Timmy-wh9jz Not if that human is Doomguy.
@@sugarsweetpeasunshine7420 huh comment got deleted. I mean I guess he was always a superhuman. @@sugarsweetpeasunshine7420 okay. I mean at the end of the day its really up to the writers. Maybe I'm just missing a detail.
OH MY GOD I want to see a proper let's play series of Shad playing Doom: Eternal
going by the visuals of the crucible sword in both games and the fact doomguy's suit has no visible life support i'd say the blade is something like a steel-strength monoatomic oxygen plasma, which would turn the blade into a sort of chemistry chainsaw that uses the oxygen of the blade to oxidize and burn away material while replenishing the blade from the surrounding air, it wouldn't just rip and tear, imagine a chainsaw made of acid, lightning, and fire, that's basically what the crucible sword does on an atomic level
"This is a surprisingly well designed weapon."
Given how Doom's supporting cast has always been weapons, they have to look as badass and fun as the Slayer himself.
EDIT: Thanks for the likes hitting the edgy number.
Almost at 666 likes damn
witherkx bro he reached 666 likes today
i gave you 669, Nice
Thought on the sword: The hilt may be spaced from the cross guard to prevent the user from being burned by the blade.
Since it's used by Doom Guy, it's probably so that the blade doesn't get burned by the user.

The crucible is NOT a lightsaber
Alexis Dy your right!
It’s a demonic one
It’s a heavy metal lightsaber, as I like to say.
the crucible is neither light nor a saber

Because there is. While the spiked top is good at tearing into the victim, it's also reasonably difficult to tear it back OUT. A wildly unfavorable situation when surrounded by the remaining 999 demons that are slightly miffed about you obliterating their friend.
@@justinsadler5695 it goes out the other side.
Justin Sadler to be fair that kinda seems to be the point in game. The only time the doomslayer thrusts he breaks the blade off in the target. That flat tip would make it much more difficult to take out
Justin Sadler well the actual crucible blade is made of argent energy. That’s like saying it’s be hard to tear a lightsaber out of someone. I like a hot knife through butter
Shad: "spikes on the blade?"
Me: "you mean the serrations?"
You mean the shark teeth
Force concentrating teeth on the first third of the blade would be very useful for bending and puncturing plate. Kinda in the way on a normal sized sword, plus normal swords have less mass.
I see this thing as being basically a hybrid weapon: an Ax-Sword. It has most of the maneuverability/versatility of a sword, with some of the devastating impact of an ax or war pick thanks to those spikes on the end. It's the perfect combination for when you're going to be surrounded by enemies (sword) who have extra tough skin and/or armor (ax).
We will send unto them... only Shad.
You mean...we Shad onto them?
*I Love medieval stuff like DOOM*
DOOM is kinda medieval. Futuristic, but medieval
@@XG-OFFICIAL-59 "futuristic but medieval"
a SmartName yeah that’s definitely what he said.
Well, you do go medieval on them demons.
"Futuristic, but medieval" I'm true. Taras Nabad looks very ancient and medieval, and then other places like ARC Complex and the Cultist Base are very futuristic
One point Shad didn’t address, which he is quite fond of in other videos are thrust. Originally you would think, that thrusts would be impossible with this kind of sword tip, but because the crucible sword is this weird kind of energy sword and has more then enough penetrating force without having to channel all the force into a actually small sword point, enlarging the tip is actually a perfect way to really step up the damage potential of thrusts! So that is another cool and useful thing in the design of the crucible sword!
Shad: I like swords
Me: Yep, that's why it sums up your author biography at the end of your book.
Small spikes close to the hilt: Rip!
Large spikes towards the tip: Tear!
It's the other way around
imagine being his neighbor a grown man builds a fortress in his back yard and runs around playing with swords
great videos keep up the good work
i would be friends with him. at least if he could stomach my nerdism
It would be like having a golden retriever as a neighbor, absolutely no downsides to that
Imagine the BBQ cookouts
Plus, swords are just fucking cool, shad has so many props it'd be hard not to like him as a neighbor, SWORD DUELS
I had a dream that I was his neighbour... honestly the best dream ever. Just swords and castles everywhere...
I must say this is the best intro you have ever done, Imo
Its good to know these kind of videos exist... and also that they are easy to follow

I'm curious if the various melee weapons from Warframe, including the custom ones (Zaws), have ever popped up on your radar. Reason being that they actually have classifications, and as such various upgrades depending on the type, including "stances", which in this case sets up the weapon's melee combos and, in some cases, attack varieties for those weapons rather than how the weapon appears to be held.
I'd like to hear your impressions on if those attacks match the weapon types in your opinion, or if I'm narrowing it down to one specific weapon, I'm mostly curious of your impressions of a specific Zaw; Dokrahm strike and Jayap grip, which makes a two-handed scythe looking weapon; which the game classifies as a Heavy Blade weapon. For reference, that weapon type is shared with two handed sword looking weapons.
Honestly considering how overly fancy their designs are, he probably have as much of an aneurysm as he did with the bat'leth.
@@Darth234Ravenous depends on the melee tbh. Maybe not for the pangolin sword but he’s probably have an aneurysm over something like the rocket whip thing or the ridiculousness of the gram
With the odd tip, it could potentially also be used as a third blade-edge on the tip for stabbing. As the blade is made of superheated, semi-physical energy, you don't have to worry as much about being able to penetrate through things like with any other blade designed for stabbing, so instead it's optimized for damage
That intro. That's enough.
Petition to cast Shad as doomguy in any future film adaptation of Doom.
Finally, a sci-fi/fantasy weapon he actually likes. Just one question:
What about dragons?
@Nick Fletcher. Wrong series.
@Nick Fletcher. what about the wookie attacks on the droids?
There's been pictures of dragons in the two recent Doom games. Not some singular demon-dragon. Dragons fighting along Doomguy's ancient legion. They never show up in gameplay. Soon.
@@sinningwithpfp6525 what about wookie dragon riders attacks on droids?
Crucible on the ground, BFG for when they're in the air?
There's also one thing, it's specifically made to slaughter demons. And if I'm correct, there's in entre that states how their skin is hard as steel so firearms only work if point blank or extremely high calibur.
Which is why the HMG is chambered in .50BMG, and the Chaingun is chambered in 15mm rounds... which are anti-aircraft munitions.
@@point-five-oh6249 and yet regular shotgun shells do fine in the super shotgun. (They're definitely stronger than 12 gauge but I really can't believe they're stronger than chaingun or assault rifle rounds)
@@Klausinator451 I think super shotgun uses 4ga shells, but don’t quote me on that. I think they kept the munitions simplistic so that you’re not worried about random shotshells laying on the ground not belonging to the gun you need it for. Kinda hard to distinguish shotshells when they’re just floating on the ground and there’s no way to really see other than 4ga being a bit bigger. I mean after all, they wanted to create a looter shooter style game that emphasizes fast paced action, not Fallout: New Vegas where you have like 20 different ammunition types
