I like the fact that Catherine O'Hara gave the eulogy. She was the mother in Home Alone and they shared some good scenes together in that movie. They must have been really good friends.

I had the amazing privilege of meeting John 3 times at YYZ in Toronto. Once, he got up from his chair in the first class lounge to introduce me to his wife, son and daughter. What an honour to meet them all. Miss him terribly.

Ok.. Catherine O'Hara's funeral speech actually made me cry :( She and John Candy were amazing in Home Alone. Candy shot his scenes on only one day and improvised the dialoge about once forgetting a kid at a funeral. What a guy! He'll be missed forever and can never be replaced by anyone :(

I wish I'd known about the Toronto memorial in advance. We lived 2 hours from T.O. at the time, would've been so worth the road trip. 1:02 is the hardest to read, a constant reminder of what was, and what could've been... 💔

@Mary C I am 46 now but so far still going fairly well. aside from back pain (bad discs) but age related I guess. my mom passed away 2 yrs ago at 69 but they felt it was due to a bleeding ulcer. my dad is now 75 and still going strong, I hope to take after his side of the family. aging scares me, especially once you get over 50 they suggest all these tests like you're some kind of ticking time bomb, but as of right now so far so good, I still feel 20 so when I see a wrinkle or gray hair it floors me.

That's the whole point of the poem I wrote months after:
      He was a wonderful man,
      a generous man,
      a hilarious man
      with a zest for life,
      and a brilliant career
      yet his future on earth
      was swept away too soon
He has earned a place in heaven
      for all his hardships
      and all of his work
      yet he made the most
      with his friends and family
      but all of his happiness
      and all of his joy
      were swept away too soon
We must now forget the past
and we must get on with life
and its ups, downs, and sidewayses
      yet we must always remember
      this genuine person
since memories are all we now have
      because his great life
      was swept away too soon

The day he died, I can remember very clearly. I was very sad and very upset. As, in the back of my mind somewhere, I didn’t want to believe it… but I knew because of his weight, height, and love for food, and cigarettes that it was sadly going to be a short life. The crazy thing is, all he got in, in that short life is more than most of us get in… if we get 100 years. He is a great example of living life to its fullest, doing everything you can do to be and stay your happiest… and treat everybody as if they are your best friend.
John, I love you and I miss you. I wish you were still here every day, because this world truly needs you now. Thank you for everything you did to make people smile when they were feeling their worst. It happens more commonly than you think. At least he didn't suffer in this way. I was only 4 when he passed and was too young to understand. But watching his films and reading about him makes me wish there were more authentic people like him in Hollywood today

My favorite comedic actor of all time. I remember when I first heard the news. One of the saddest days of my life. To me he will always be immortalized as Del Griffith in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Always admired his charisma, he looked like the kind of man who could talk to anyone about anything and anywhere and make them feel good after a chat and a laugh, loved his movies.

Catherine O'Hara was a genius in her own right. If anyone could understand who John Candy was and get that across to others, it would be her.

This bothers me more and more that such an enormous talent is no longer here yet there are people causing harm to the world and it seems those people like forever. The world isn't fair but people like John Candy will live forever in some way.

He was talented. Happy. Friendly. Likable. Brought joy and laughter to people. He was very heavy at the end. He looked way too stressed. I’ve read about his cravings for food. They were powerful and constant. There’s got to be a cure.

I heard his dad died of the same thing at 35 and his grandfather at 42. Most likely they had some kind of heart defect that was going around in their family that doctors weren't really understanding at the time, and even if he didn't smoke or carried 300+ pounds or did drugs he wouldn't have lasted much longer probably.

I believe he was actually 400 lbs., when he died, not just 300 lbs! Also, my brother saw him in a Manhattan bar, around 1991 or 1992, with his entourage & had an estimated 23 "screwdrivers" in a few hours! I loved the guy too, but you are not going to live long if you don't limit yourself! My brother, who weighed 260 lbs., lost nearly 100 lbs. after Candy's death & never gained it back!

Back in the 80s when John did Only The Lonely in Chicago. I was hooked on that movie. I actually use to pass the off Clark street every day when I went to work. One day I got off early & took the bus back to that house. No one lived there & so I walked up those steps. I stood there happy because I could picture Anthony Quinn next door & there was flowers & seeing John wearing his police uniform saying hi to Maureen Oharra (His mom) It's been 20 years since I did that? But happy I did! R.I.P John
