  • In today’s banjo lesson, I’m bringing you a method I’ve used myself to help improve my playing. It’s a little “crazy”, but it works!
➡️ Much of the style of Irish music is so iconic that many of us already know what it should sound like. It’s in our heads.
🥇 Support my Patreon Page for tons of exclusive banjo goodies, tune transcriptions, Discord, Zoom hangs, and more:

By trying to lilt out the song in your head while playing it on the banjo, you can actually improve your playing by syncing up with the swing, lift, and “nyah” you’ve already mentally imagined.
➡️ It’ll help you sound a bit more traditionally Irish on the banjo.
This lesson will make you look a bit silly, but what do you have to lose?
💬 Did you try my method? Did anyone walk in on you and laugh? Let me know in the comments section below.

All the good banjo players are a bit mad anyway. Makes sense.

I'm fairly new to Irish music, and I'm discovering that what American jazz players mean by swing and what Irish musicians mean are not always the same thing. What is the name of this song, and what type of song is it? (Reel, hornpipe, etc?)

This is a reel called My Love Is In America. The swing is like rubato in classical music, steal
      ing time from other bars!

@@IrishTenorBanjo Rubato has a completely different meaning as I understand it; that's where there's not even really a steady beat you can tap your foot to, but a tempo that speeds up and slows down. You can definitely tap your foot from this, but I know what you mean about stealing time from one note and giving it to another. I've heard a lot of conflicting explanations from practioners of Irish music. Some people have said that hornpipes swing but reels don't, but here you're definitely swinging the beat as I know the term. Also, some people seem to think that swing only refers to accent and not rhythm, and some seem to think it encompasses both. Among the American jazz players I've performed with, we'll refer to a "hard swing" or "soft swing" depending on how much time is stolen from the following note.

@@dereknolin5986 Yeah, I definitely don't know enough about jazz to talk about it with any certainty. The "swing" in Irish music is about little ineffable and is different for different regional styles and between players. If Irish music played by a musician who does have swing and bounce, it would be a very odd collection of dotted and tied notes and would be quite difficult to read!

@ I've heard some people say that Donegal style players like fiddler John Doherty play reels and jigs straighter and with less swing. I still have a lot to learn. Thanks for the video.

For sure the tune has to be first in the mind. That is the first thing. If you can lilt it, you are ready to play it.
