Brilliant Enda!! It’s crazy how a small bit of theory can open up so many possibilities, I was always afraid to start learning music theory but with the help of yourself online and others in person I’m learning so much every day. Hope to see you at the fleadh this year will be my first time. Thank you

I find I can take in a little at a time but it has to be something practical that I can see and understand

I have to admit, I know a few notes by name and position but mostly, if someone said eg "play a C" I'd have to think about it. On a piano, no issues. On the banjo, my fingers just go where the tune is, and they don't register as a named note in my mind. I'm not sure if that makes sense, and I guess it is a consequence of learning by ear. Makes it tricky to learn using dots, but what I generally do there, if I need to - which is rare - is play the dots on the piano, hear the tune, learn it audibly on the banjo.
Thanks Enda, this has encouraged me to learn the notes on the fretboard as well!

    EXCELLENT presentation.
Ive been 'banjoing' (mostly celtic) for 70+ years .... mandolin -> tenor -> (melodic/arpeggioed clawhamered) 5-string. I can attest that until you REALLY KNOW the *ENTIRE* fret board so well (through DEVELOPED muscle memory - (instinctively and with NO THNKING !!) that your playing will greatly suffer. I think that your *EAR vs. finger/hand MUSCLE MEMORY* can only be achieved by repetetive and extensive PRACTICE until the effort becomes *extremely SATISFYING*. I can truly say that I've become ADDICTED ... simply because I learned the ENTIRE fret board..

That is an excellent assessment! Repetition. Patient repetition is the key
