Colors are very important in this show.
Alicent came in purposefully wearing the color green. The color of house Hightower. She's officially picked a side.

As Larys and Harwin Strong explain, when Oldtown, the seat of House Hightower, calls its banners to war, the beacon at the top of the Hightower glows green. Our boys are usually pretty sharp, but I keep laughing at how often they have been misreading character intentions and missing the subtle plays going on in the show. I think the last few seasons of GoT made them forget just how quiet and subtle good politicking can be when a show doesn’t just spell out everyone’s motivations. It certainly doesn’t help them that they need to make entertaining reactions and thus are prone to missing important tidbits of dialogue, to be fair.

When she sees that Rhaenyra is willing to lie to her over this and it is a lie that cost her father his position as well, she realizes that when the time comes she can't rely on Rhaneyra's word so she finally decides to commit to a side rather than trying to placate everybody.

@@foulrot She still lied by omission, which would be cause for concern from Alicent's point of view. Because she'd have to trust Rhaenyra's word that her son wouldn't be killed if there was ever any outcry for a different ruler, and the fact that Rhaenyra made that lie whilst swearing on her dead mother makes it even worse. She basically lost Alicent's trust, which was already starting to break with Otto's influential words about Rhaenyra potentially killing her brother.
I honestly love the contrast of these two characters and I can understand how they'd eventually come to blows. It's so much more complex than how the book narrates it, which is understandable since it was written from an unreliable narrator's perspective.

We DID see Laenor's hall pass before they were rolling in the tall grasses together. They were playfully sparring together in the courtyard when the King and the Princess first arrived. Viserys and the hand were focused on why his former Master of Ships wasn't there to greet him, but Rhaenyra was focused on the interaction of the two young men and she seemed to guess at their true relationship. Alicent showing up in a green dress instead of her usual red & black (Targaryen house colors) is making a statement that she is now full on team Hightower. She is pissed that Rhaenyra lied to her about being a virgin still. But Viserys plays dumb ( or is really dumb) and defies traditions without thinking about the consequences and how to manage them once it blows up. Of course the lords of Westeros will be against her being his heir...so why doesn't he change the laws and puts together a system to ensure his word will be carried on. He has people he can trust ( surprisingly enough), like Rhaenys ( for obvious reasons). His word alone is not enough, he has to be smart about it. And as much as he defends Rhaenyra, he still holds traditions close to his heart in terms of male privilege. People are conspiring against his daughter and he willingly makes more children to challenge her succession in the future, mixing in the wrong family. Of course the lords will want his son to be the heir, regardless of promises they make. Then he blindly tells Rhaenyra to get married and have more children to " strengthen her claim" 😑.. male children who will either be put into place to rule instead of her or killed so they don't become heirs. She weakening her claim actually. Nobody will support Rhaenyra anyway. Otto basically sells his daughter into royalty and now warns her that her kids and herself will be killed when Rhaenyra becomes Queen...he put her in the position of lying to her friend to marry her father... but now it's her problem. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's ridiculous how these men create unnecessary problems for their own families for the sake of religion to justify pride. Not different from people in real life.

Remembering that the book fire and blood is narrated by dubious narrators The book is told by rumors and gossip so it is not reliable, in the book it says that Daemon never likes his wife he hates her the daemon was forced to marry his wife she it is not important in the story In the book there is nothing about her just that she is married to Daemon and that after a while the news comes from her that she died and that she died falling from the horse that is all that is said about the daemon's wife in the Book
As I said,Daemon's wife is not important in the story,no one cares about her and the only thing to watch in the scenes when she talks about Daemon's wife is when Rhaenys says that Daemon's wife died,no one paid attention to the news she said That's because she's not important, in the books we don't know if it was the daemon who killed his wife because when she dies the daemon is in a war so we don't know if it was him, in the series they said it was the Daemon who killed his wife the daemon is not killing his wife because she had already lost the movement of her body So much so that he was leaving but the girl was very stupid she opened her mouth so he killed her, the scriptwriters are Ryan they said they said that Daemon is not the kill his wife if she didn't open her mouth, more like She opened her mouth so he'll kill her
Being a Christian, if you soiled your white command, it was because you wanted to, because Rhaenyra didn't stick a knife in your neck and force you to do what you did, do you really think that, Rhaenyra? And give up everything just to be with him, my God, this girl is a princess she is heir to the throne she has her customs she is not one to give up everything to have a simple life, Rhaenyra is not in love with Christian she just wants to have fun she just wants sex that's all Christian you are very emotional you are very deluded you and stupid rhaenyra would never give up everything for you Christian you and only a knight have nothing to offer her

This whole universe is set on medieval history. This in comparison to what happened is light. What a person wears, how they address one another, who they spend more time with, that is them communicating. Watch how Daemon doesn't even bother to dance. He just walks on the dance floor to talk, its a character trait of how blunt and unsubtle he is. Allicent wearing green at a state event is her stating she is returning her loyalties to her family not her husband; calling upon those loyal to her family to be loyal to her family. I've been really enjoying the subtlety of this season as it builds to the brutality of a war.
Remember earlier episodes when all the knights have 0 combat experience that's about to change 😆

I mean, if my best friend undermined all my efforts and lied to my face even when swearing on their dead mother while also getting my dad fired and expelled from the city, I'd be a bit mad aswell. Rhaenyras selfishness has fucked Alicent over like crazy, which is especially sour since Alicent has performed every duty possible while Rhaenyra has escaped from all of hears, even when Alicent and Viserys had put in alot of work to help her with the privileged opportunity to choose a suiter.
To then also be faced with the fact that Rhaenyra will basically have to kill Alicents children to ever sit comfortably on the throne makes it even worse. What reason does Alicent have to tolerate Rhaenyra at all? What reason does she have to keep the secrets? Even now in this episode when Rhaenyra finally looks like she will perform her duty she teases Daemon to give her an excuse to escape from it again. Rhaenyra is not a good person, she lies to and uses everyone around her for selfish reasons.
I think you're just being confused with the angle of the show with Rhaenyra as "the main character". She and Daemon might be a big focus but they are not good people. Otto never lied, Alicent has been very forgiving.
Thats the thing about Lrys, the son of the new Hand, he wasn't makign Alicent believe the wrong thing, he was halper her see past the delusion she set up for herself to cope with the idea that ehr best friend would lie to her on such strong terms. None of these people around Alicent are making her believe things that didn't happen, they're making her realize the truth. Rhaenyra is the one who made Alicent believe in falsehoods, which caused her fatehr to be sent away.

Larys Strong did have a reason to cause chaos, he is the second son of a noble house, which means he stands to inherit little or nothing. Like Ser Otto Hightower, if he is to have any real power, he has to create it. As for Criston Cole, Rhaenyra isn't innocent in all this, but he had ample time to tell her no before their night together. He made the choice to sully his honor, and now seems to be cracking up because of it. Does he care about her, probably, but them running off together was more about him than her, he saw it as the only way to fix what he had done, if she was not the princess, he committed no sin.

It’s true that he told her no in the novella and lived. But, I think the show does better at making the point that Cole comes from nothing, by Westerosi standards. Rhaenyra couldn’t execute someone from a great House without controversy but she could have had Ser Criston executed with a finger snap. So, how did he know he’d even live through rejecting her? I do think he held a torch for her for a long time but it was also an unequal power dynamic. Saying no could get him killed.

Alicent did talk to Rhaenyra about the rumours surrounding her and daemon last episode. What she thinks now is that she was being lied to by Rhaenyra, who swore on her mother's memory that daemon did not touch her and that she hence was still a maiden, neither of which were true because she had had sex with Ser Criston Cole (something Rhaenyra also did not mention to her at the time even though it might have been important) and Alicent vouched for her, which led to the firing of her father. At that point it becomes harder for Alicent to think that there is a way for her and Rhaenyra to simply and honestly talk to each other in good faith. This friendship is now over in her mind. She has been a dutiful wife and done what everyone asked of her and she kind of envies Rhaenyra's freedom to do as she pleases so at this point she considers that it's enough: she will no longer be a pawn in other people's games (even though she ends up being just that, since Larys Strong was able to sow dissent).

Give me the aesthetics of the red hue of the weirdwood tree glowing in twilight, give me the flickering lights, give me the gloomy ambience of a GoT wedding with an equally gloomy soundtrack & it’s A1! The slightly overlooked heartfelt exchange Otto & Alicent had at the beginning was the most significant moment of the episode imo, other than Viserys dropping. Otto is right. You either hope for Rhaenyra’s mercy in the future or you act now. It's the Tywin Jaime "we can establish a dynasty that last a thousand years" moment. The wedding sets up the first chess pieces for Dance of Dragons. *Rhaenyra and Laenor were being told their wedding vows, but it was Alicent and Criston who were getting “married”.*

To be fair, I think Alicent's "villain arc" here wasn't the result of a misunderstanding or lack of communication. She simply realized that Rhaenyra had DEFINITELY lied to her about still being a virgin (even swearing on her mother's memory!) and so she's feeling super-disillusioned about both their friendship AND the trustworthiness of the Targaryens in general (since it's also clear that the King sent the Plan-B Tea to help cover up her indiscretion, even while firing Otto for bringing it to his attention).
Moreover, Alicent herself has been forced to seduce, marry, and sleep with a man old enough to be her father, yet she's honored her oaths and remained loyal and faithful to him despite her obvious misgivings. And now she finds out that the Targaryens don't hold themselves to that same honorable standard - not even her supposed best friend. She probably feels like she's been played for a fool, doubly so by thinking that at least everyone else was being equally strict and honest.
In other words, none of these are things that would be fixed or mollified by her trying to talk things out with Rhaenyra. The trust between them has officially been broken, so Alicent has little reason to think that Rhaenyra will be honest with her if they talked, nor much reason to think that Rhaenyra can be trusted to take care of her in the future.

So I might be reiterating what others have said but there is no amount of conversations that would solve the conflict coming.
The conversation with Alicent and her father explains the stakes. The lives of her children.
The conversation between Ser Criston and Rhaenyra explains their mind sets. Criston is a very moral person. Honor is all he has. He raised himself from nothing to the kings guard. That is not lost on him. Now he has betrayed the oath he made. So he wants to run away and live a life with his love.
Rhaenyra explains that the throne means more to her than anything. She is willing to forgo freedom and love for the power that the throne gives. That tells us as an audience that Alicent’s father was right to fear for his grand children.
When Criston confess (which I agree was dumb) that tell Alicent that she can not trust Rhaenyra since she swore on her mother’s grave she did not lose her virtue. Which means her dads warning now rings true. So she wore the green dress to symbolize she is at war.
This is at least what I got out of the episode.

@@DrHeroe Shes mad that her friend lied to her face while swearing on her dead mother, the same lie that got Alicents father sent away, the same lie that undermined Alicent and Viserys efforts to find Rhaenyra a suiter, a choice Rhaenyra was privileged to get yet she disgarded it.
I don't understand what show you "shes just jealous" guys are watching. Have you paid attention? Are you all fooled by the Rhaenyra main character angle? She and Daemon have a big focus, but they're clearly not good people, and it's ruinign the lives of everyone around them. On top of all that now Alicents children will never be without a threat of assassination as long as Rhaenyra lives. Alicent has every right to be pissed, she doesn't have any reason to not spill the truth about Rhaenyra to the entire realm.
Siding with Rhaenyra this far in the show means one of two things, you either don't pay attention, or your moral compass values selfishness above all.

@@DrHeroe How is that a betrayal? Her father is the king, the lady of Hightower is the most likely candidate in line, and it's not like that was Alicents choice either. It's what her father wanted, so since shes driven by duty she took that as an order.
There has been absolutely nothing in the show indicating that Alicent wants what Rhaenyra has... Alicent has expressed loneliness, not a desire to run around in brothels. She hasn't expressed any such desires in the slightest.
You're just misunderstanding their juxaposition. When the show shows their juxaposition like in episode 4 they're not saying that Alicent wants what Rhaenyra has. With Alicent they're showing the unhappiness that comes with serving only duty, and with Rhaenyra they're showing the harm that comes from too much self-indulgence. One is trapped by too much duty and one is too free from duty.
They're not comparing their lives as if they want eachothers lives... You have somehow managed to misinterpret this, likely because you view everythign Rhaenyra does as good because shes like the main character, but it's not good, everything she does has very bad consequences regardless of modern ideas of romanticizing overindulgence and selfishness. It's not good.
I do also wonder if this comes from you guys just not being used to female characters having deeper conflicts than toxic femininity AKA jealousy, spitefulness, grudgeholding and so on.

One of the things that HOTD done really well is lean into the language style. GOT got very modern with its dialect and I think that (along with other things) hurt the show.
Rhys Infans speech about the future to Alicent is straight Shakespeare. 🔥🔥🔥

  • @Adamantium93

You guys do realize that Alicent talking to Rhaenyra will fix nothing, right? Alicent now knows the truth (that Rhaenyra is no maiden), and she also knows that she cannot trust Rhaenyra (because Rhaenyra lied to maintain that). Say Alicent confronts Rhaenyra about this. If Rhaenyra tells the truth, then she has to justify why she lied, and there is no right answer there. If Rhaenyra lies, then Alicent only has more evidence for why she cannot trust her. Further, Rhaenyra exploited their friendship not only to cover this lie, but also to get Alicent's father (and sole ally) expelled from the court.
Her father is right. So long as Alicent's children are alive, they are a clear and present threat to Rhaenyra's rule; a daily challenge to her legitimacy. Alicent cannot trust that Rhaenyra will abide that.

But she didn’t lie completely.. at least as much as Alicent knows. Alicent was asking her if she slept with Daemon, which she didn’t. She never said specifically she was a maiden, Alicent just assumed that based on her denial re Daemon. However Alicent is a hypocrite considering her scheming to wed the King beings Rhaenyra’s back soooooo…

@@allison4516 A lie of omission is still a lie. The point of the conversation was about Rhaenyra's "virtue", and they both knew it. Saying, "well, technically you never asked about anyone else and all I did was let you assume the answer you wanted" would not be a good out for Rhaenyra. It would only hammer home how she abused Alicent's trust to save herself. In the end, Alicent betrayed her father for Rhaenyra and now knows she did so based on a fiction.
Frankly, I think neither of them is pure (though Alicent never seemed like a willing participant in the king-seducing bit), but that's precisely why talking about it will not work. They have to be enemies because both are existential threats to eachother, and neither can trust the other enough to ensure their safety.

Otto wasn't dramatic, in history and westeros as well, when you ascend to the throne is normal to kill anyone who can claim your title, so if i was rhaenyra i would kill aegon i mean, Robert did the same when he won the civil war

The MVP imo was Alicent, far and away, I think she had a great conclusion to her half-season arc after being framed as toothless and being shown to despise her position. And honestly? Very justifiable imo. Otto isnt wrong about Rhaenyra's safest path being to kill Alicent's children (Would Rhaenyra do it? Idk but thats the safe option). And after she learns that (from her pov) Rhaenyra lied to her and betrayed her, she finally has enough and acts. I love her taking agency for herself in a situation where she is afforded none and is expected to accept it, and she has done it to metaphorically declare war by wearing that bomb ass green dress to the feast, shedding her Targaryen coloured shackles. And then coldly calling Rhaenyra stepdaughter in greeting, oof.

6:53 Sadly Jay, Otto isn't being dramatic. Historically, this used to happen a lot when there were other claimants. Often they would go to war just to guarantee their own safety and only make peace when their safety was assured - one way or the other. Hell, they didn't even need to declare war to be a threat; in 1918, to the Russian Tsar's family were executed by the Communists because the other side in the civil war wanted to restore the monarchs to power. The Tsar had nothing to do with the civil war as he'd been under house arrest since before the war started. But because the mere threat existed - because someone else threatened to put them back on the thrown - the entire family was murdered. George RR Martin based these books on medieval England and back then, they did not mess around when it came to the throne
