Thanks for your video! We Germans have a special culture and I can understand that we Germans are not always considered friendly or helpful. We have more of a reserved culture ("If you need help, feel free to get in touch!") and are less likely to approach people directly and small talk (especially here in Northern Germany) is rather rare. I myself react surprised and reserved when strangers approach me just like that, typical German 😑🤣 And I have the highest respect for foreigners learning German - such a difficult language! Even I, as a North German, make mistakes all the time and check every e-mail at work three times to make sure that everything is grammatically correct 🤣 And I have total incomprehension for the fact that you are then criticized for not speaking German fluently or making mistakes instead of being happy that the language is being learned and respect is shown for it.
I've seen people with learning disabilities struggle for support in college and I really don't think that's okay. My niece has a learning disability herself and we as a family had to fight like lions with all the authorities until she received the school support that is best for her development. Germany has a lot of catching up to do here!
The gripe culture of the Germans, the eternal criticizing and complaining about all sorts of things also gets on my nerves and I'm also of the opinion that you should keep your mouth shut if you have nothing meaningful to say (I think this is where my German directness comes out again in the statement). Bleib wie du bist! 😎

I think it was good step to change the channels name, for me lamblike was a quite shy and quiet girl/woman but you're speaking louder, you evolved in audio quality and self-confidence so the old name wasn't fitting anymore to the person in the video. Hi from Hamburg on the other side fits very well I think so good job and good video.

Hey, just found your channel. I love your story and how you came to be in Germany. It sounds like you worked really hard to adapt to the German lifestyle and everything that comes with it. I can even hear a little bit of a German accent in your voice as well, which is awesome. I've heard of Americans who have lived in Germany FOR EVER and still haven't found their German tongue.
I myself am half German and have been raised bi-culturally in the US. You've re-invigorated my drive to some day make that big 1-way trip to Germany some day soon.

Okay, I know I am all over your IG/YT and I apologize for that - I just relate to your content a lot and really enjoy it!
I appreciate you mentioning the thing about American friends - I get that a lot and I can find it hurtful: some of my deepest connections come from my friends in the states. Austrian openness also defies many stereotypes, so I appreciate your comments pushing back on generalizations across both channels! (Though I will say... Austrians tend to bring up fast food or obesity within 90(ish) seconds of meeting me, which is frustrating). I think many people confuse the American friendliness and "yeah, come over any time!" with superficiality, when it's honestly just a way that many Americans try to make someone new feel comfortable in a conversation. Americans tend to truly take new people "in," even just for the moment. idk, I like it.
I will say that even many Germans in my life comment on Austrians closed to new friendships, but I also think it comes from the fact that Austrians don't often travel for uni, so they come into college with a full circle from their high school and perhaps even a circle from their WG and accumulate friends at uni as they go, so it's really hard to be let in as someone outside of one of those three circles. Which is why, as you mentioned, studying is the way to go! My first two years in Austria, I had a lot of Austrian friends (love facebook groups!!), but never really felt like I was truly integrated - studying here changed that.
Thank you for giving me some things to think on today x

    • @HiFromHamburg
      @HiFromHamburg  3 роки тому

I love your comments! Thanks for being here ^^ def no need to apologize. I think it’s really cool you’re experiencing the Austrian life as an American and that you can relate with the points I brought up! I was afraid to talk about the comments that I have found offensive but it was worth it when you said you agree with how I feel about it too. I’m glad I’m not alone on that. I so agree! American friendliness I think is something foreigners visiting the US fail to understand. I also like how the American friendliness is and if it’s just for a moment too, like you said. Glad you also agree with me about the studying in Germany part too! Interesting to learn some things about Austrians I didn’t know about before :) so thank you in return for the interesting thoughts to think about too :)

As a multilingual German (how typical), I always was an intuitive learner. I didn't care too much for making mistakes and I learn by listening to native speakers and just speaking and asking people to correct me. All those grammar rules, I learned them at school but did not necessarily connect them to the things I said. So, when a teache asked me, which rules applied to a sentence I said, I usually cited the wrong one, driving him nuts.
As long as you speak German, you'll improve. And don't worry too much about grammar or mistakes. Just enjoy it.

Lila, since you mentioned „Punting for the People“ in another comment, it would be very cool if you two could make a collab video once the Corona situation has finally settled. He also has a strong focus on learning the language and building a life in Germany and less about culture comparison, which kind of run its course by now.

    Hi Lila,
I really like the name Lamblike. For me, there's always some wolf in it - Wolf im Schafspelz.
On the other hand, there is a nickname for me floating around that is easy to think of and spoken with no harm in mind, but I attach it to a very specific memory. I really get obsessive when this nickname comes up. I should be able to control how I'm addressed. A hard pill to swallow form some.

The spelling reform was only in 1996. Before that one wrote "daß".
It has to do with the fact that the FRG and GDR were unified in 1990. For a long time there was no agreement and wanted to keep the German script the same.
Ultimately, all of Germany, Austria and Switzerland were able to agree. But in Switzerland you often write "ss" instead of "ß". But that creates problems "Buße" vs "Busse", "Maße" vs "Masse".
Before that, there were simplifications in 1935, the long-s was abolished and it was changed to Latin script, previously Sütterlin or German script.
Before that, the last reform was in 1901. In many words, the "th" became "t" because the "h" was not spoken.
Therefore the word "Ton" has two meanings in German, there used to be "Ton" and "Thon" with diffrent meanings, but same spoken.
But in words that concerned the emperor it stayed "Thron" .

Hey, I like your video! 20:22 I can't think of a saying that mentions kindness or niceness. There's "Reden ist Silber, Schweigen ist Gold." But that's not really very specific, not in any context regarding niceness or kindness. From my experience it's more used when someone has to keep information to themselves for either personal gain (hence the gold > silver) or in order to not look like a know-it-all.

After watching your first video in which you discus about Aldi and culture difference this is my second time on your channel well you ask about difference between Americans & Germans as far as i know Americans are really warmed welcome and friendly because im from Pakistan and in my country i saw from my childhood moving of Americans in there vacctions in summer and now im in Germany Berlin and i see many Germans as well but Germans are not as much friendly and not warmed welcome as Americans are
Second thing is that if you are in trouble and any American around you so he or she must ask you are u ok or not but Germans are not like that i travel daily in public transport in Berlin and i saw Germans are just busy with them self even they do not talk with each other so in short i have to say i salute Americans for their kindness

It's not only the loud people beeing loud on social Media but also thw quiet ones^^
I have to learn to start comments with something nice too before I start my more objektive mode. It's not as easy as it might sound 🤣

That thing with the "ß" is actually very old, but some years ago there also was a big "Rechtschreibreform" and we got the "neue Rechtschreibung", wich basicly are new rules or changed rules for the gramar of the german language

Lila is a süß little alias. I like that name actually for a girl or daughter. Cool Q and A and to get to know you a little better. Also, nice Wäscherei there in the background. I like how many Germans have that in the kitchen. My biggest motivator right now in life, or at least one of them, but probably the biggest, is German. If I were to start relationship in Germany, it would be cool to try and get into generally a fully German speaking relationship.

Wow, half of your adult life spread out in front of us! Do you know Diana Verry (YT)? She's living in Berlin (hint) and for some 4 years right now. Her German has also not reached the perfect state. Or Dana (YT: Wanted Adventure) with a German husband? While her German is close to perfect she still has the American language in her mind. To each his/her own. I knew a Yugoslavian guy who worked for a German company in Germany for over 20 years. But he was still struggling with vocabulary. Any my English also sucks when I have to get deeper into subjects despite a time longer than you have lived I speak it. So to each his/her own. For learning a language nothing beats using it. But you know that already.

Welcome back, girl! :) Nice to see you again. I've changed my channel name since the olden days as well, so can relate.
You being sick and tired of WW2 topics sounds like me and the Beatles - they're still a huge name among music nerds, but I feel I had more than my share in 7th grade. Anyway, you might still learn something new from this chap named Mark Felton on here, a historian who has a knack for digging out obscure wartime (and occasionally, colds war era) stories and bringing them back to life.
I never realized you had an actual learning disability - it's not like you absolutely need one to struggle with some things. Makes sense now. You're one of these people who have to find their own way around learning then. I have one colleague who at one point found he learns best by listening, so he's into audiobooks. Another guy I once came across was a good speaker and quite smart actually, he just had to work around his lysdexia, err, dyslexia that would be giving him a hard time now and then but with the help of computers he generally managed. I think everyone's favorite UA-cam small engine mechanic @Mustie1 may be a similar case, super handy but not necessarily academic in the traditional sense.
And this possibly brings us to viewership statistics. These might be a combination of two several:
    1. UA-cam audiences tend to be male-dominated to begin with. I guess that's because a lot of them are visual learners. I don't mind reading in the least, but as they say, a picture says more than a thousand words. I've learned so much about cars on here alone. (I probably wouldn't be reading my own homepage these days, it's text till the cows come home. Sad, I know. :( Unfortunately I totally suck at anything visual media, my image editing skills are basically stuck in 1997. I guess some people would never be the ones for a blog, and others aren't naturals at video.) And a lot of guys _aren't_ necessarily on speaking terms with books. (If you've ever seen someone out in public with a book, chances are it was a female.)
Fun fact: Mom used to say that Dad gets his education from TV. Guess I'm the same with YT then. ;)
    2. Germans have a level of self-awareness brought about by our unfortunate past and how we dealt with it. Besides, not being a superpower brings along more incentive to be looking _über den Tellerrand_ as we like to say. (That said, the most "internationally-minded" people I know would probably have to be the Dutch.)
    3. There always are plenty of things you don't even know about your own country. There are lots of different more or less isolated groups of people around. I'm sure this is even more pronounced in the US.
It's funny that you think these cultural difference videos are ultimately boring, too. Yeah, they're kind of bread and butter content for "X in Y" type channels. Best taken in small doses, I guess, and quality is definitely going to vary.
Otto is not necessarily my cup of tea either, but you do know that YT has a playback speed setting, right?! It doesn't necessarily sound pretty but works well enough for speech. I'm generally on 1.75X, practice makes perfect and my time isn't growing on trees. (Says the one typing a YT comment for nigh on 2 hours. _Priorities,_ man.)
Speaking of people from that corner of the country, maybe you'll like Germany's arguably most American-influenced YT car channel @Max Speedshop. Great guy and community, a bit chaotic and eccentric for sure but about as honest and straight-laced as they come. I think he likes quite a few of the usual suspects, from @Hoovie's Garage and @WatchJRGo to @Junkyard Digs, and maybe @HubNut as well.
Even if you never made it to Australia, the good thing is you can still enjoy at least some of the output of their excellent music scene right here. (Try that with Japan.) Now 2020 was a bit of a bummer year I thought (wasn't it for all of us?), but 2019's output was HOT.

Hello Lila, after a short vocal ß is replaced by ss. But the there was no captal ß though. It got introduces a few years ago. Until the fonts hava this glyph (form of characters) and the people use it, chances are that the ß will be gone someday. Especially since Switzerland doesn´t no it at all. Greetings and Best Wishes

    Hi Lila
So you have a learning disability and you've managed to learn German.
I have dyslexia and I'm Welsh living in Bonn and I've been trying to learn German for a few years now. So I'm extremely interested in how someone else with a learning disability has managed to learn German.
Have you already talked about your learning disability in previous videos and exactly that your learning disability is? Is it dyslexia?
In general education as well as specifically learning German, have you found that you learn differently from others and use other methods of learning specific to your learning disability?
I am 46 years old so when I want to school in the UK they didn't provide any help for children with dyslexia. When I was 18 the UK government had changed it's mind and started to provide help for dyslexia. When I start university and I got money from the government to help with my dyslexia but there was no where to spend the money, there was one school specific for children with dyslexia who were 5-11 years old. But I was 18 and just starting a degree in mathematics. So I went there once and talked to the woman, and she mentioned that there was a few techniques for learning specific for people with dyslexia. That was it, so I have never had any help for my dyslexia by anyone who knows anything about dyslexia. I did have extra lessons when I was a child from the teachers, however teachers in the UK have a qualification called a PGCE which does not contain any information about any learning disability. Which is the same in Germany, teachers in Germany don't get any training about learn disabilities unless they specialize in learn disabilities.
In theory I should see a specialist in dyslexia but there is a fat chance in hell of ever being able to find that help. It's difficult enough to find a specialist in dyslexia. You get teachers who are qualified as teachers who's qualification contains no information about any learning disability. But then there is the fact that I'm an adult and teachers for adults learning languages have a qualification that is just a fraction of what a teacher for children would have. So then you have the specialists in dyslexia, who only deal with children, nice for the children, but no use for me. So dyslexia specialists also don't teach German to adults.
Right now I don't have an income so I'm not going to pay for any specialist.
So I'm always interested to hear what other people who have learning disabilities have done to learn.

I hoped someone might read the symptoms of it because if I could’ve had my grandma for another 5 years that would’ve been amazing. Nobody recognized the symptoms (the extremely itchy skin for example) so I will make a video about this in the future. I think if caught in the first stage... anyways. Thank you for your comment. I like Lila alot more than Lamblike... and I am not even talking about the name but the person you have become. I admit, I belong to the 95% of male Germans that at some point started to watch your channel simply because you are so pretty... but I stayed because I thought that you offer much more than the typical other „American in Germany“ channels... oh btw, I can absolutely identify with two things you mentioned in this video: I absolutely hated my school experience and it put me in a shell for a long time... once I started studying at the university, I also came out of my shell and started dancing on tables every weekend.... keep dancing as long as you want, well at least once that is possible again :)

Hey Lila, I had watched some of your old videos and liked parts of it. After watching three of your newer videos, I have to say that I like them much better in every respect. You have really improved in regards to structure and set up. I also like that you seem to be a bit more opinionated. In the past, I sometimes felt you held back and I think your candor in the newer videos makes them better.
I rarely comment on UA-cam videos, but a few things you mentioned really caught my attention.
    1. I am a German male (I guess I fit in the analytics 😅) and work a lot with people from all over the world, including a lot of Americans. I personally think cultural differences are quite interesting and can be very useful when you know very little about the other country/culture. However, I agree with you that these observations often lead to over-generalizations and tend to become somewhat repetitive and boring. In the end, each and every individual is different.
    2. You mentioned that most of your viewers (and those of other creators with similar content) are German male. Do you have any ideas why that is? One could argue that most of the creators that make similar content and have lots of followers are female and I am sure there is a connection there. But personally I also watch quite a few male creators with similar content. So there seems to be more to it. Any theories?
    3. Another question I had when you mentioned you don't like "cultural differences" as a topic, was what you consider to be interesting topics for your channel.
Please feel free to reply or not reply to any questions I had and please use as much detail as you are comfortable with.
All the best from Southern Germany!
