I picked up one of these at a thrift store for USD$6. I cleaned the heads and when I put in a tape to test it, I got sound but no picture. Sure enough, that ribbon connector beneath the shield in back was unplugged. I plugged it in and got a picture, but it was noisy as hell… for a few tries, and then it stopped threading the tape properly. The tape is riding too high up along the guides for some reason. It tries to rethread it, then ejects it. The guide to the right of the drum left a slight crease halfway up the tape as a result.
I’m not sweating it, I just thought me having a series of problems on the same model and also deciding it’s not worth the trouble was kinda funny. (The machine was also buggy - as in quite a few dead flies and carapaces inside.)

Dave, its not possible that the head drum is 180 out?
I put a head drum on the wrong way around once, all tapes showed monochrome, but recording with the heads on wrong produced a good colour picture.
    See if recording gives colour?.

I was thinking about that as well. But if you watch carefully as he puts the drum back together, you will see that there's a small notch on the PCB where the grounding spring sits on, so I believe he did put it back together correctly.

this brings back nightmarish memories of the decades that I spent fixing this shit and getting mentally sick, but having no choice but to do it just to make money. then i eventually finally retired and stopped and just hated the sight of any of this obsolete garbage, and anything with motors, i hate motors! i threw away all my motorized electronics and felt such relief. i now see these items as neanderthal, so seeing you do it brought back those memories, except that i now can smile about it because i'm over it and feel liberated. i appreciate your sharing and kudos for having found the problem and gotten it to work. yes, the color shit is basically a dead end unless you have the s/m, as you said, and even then it's hours on end to fix that. the best solution is to go to the highest bridge in town and throw it down into the rocks as you have some popcorn.

It's interesting, I have a number of local techs who "fix" electronics inc vintage stuff yet none of them replied to my email asking if they could fix my cassette deck. I fixed it myself thanks to the help from people online and watching your videos :) The right channel level was very low only when recording. Was a blown inductor.

I hate those things. The brother-in-law had one, it started doing the same as that one did, I looked at it and decided that I didn't like him enough to spend hours on it. So I told him I would need a manual before I could fix a Sharp VCR. I didn't like him much, or his choice of VCR so I needed very little excuse not to repair it. I knew he wouldn't bother to get a manual, so I never saw it again.
He is no longer with my sister, she says "I have no idea why I even thought about marring him" I told her "I told you not to, but you didn't listen!"
Such is life! I don't like him and I don't like Sharp! Strange how he always bought Sharp stuff! 8-l

Hi watching all your videos and learning a lot thanks for all the info you share :)
I want to put some newer modern films onto SVHS "that i own", I have a nv-fs90 Panasonic atm and a few for spares, What would be a good recorder to get the best picture quality of a film onto the svhs tapes ? on the 90 on playback is seems a little grainy but after a while it kinda gets better, not sure if its just the old original pre recorded tapes, So my idea is to refresh my favourites and keep the sleeves onto nicer svhs.

I used to sell Sharp. Thought of them as junk, but some of their products were surprisingly high spec, even though the appearance wasnt great. I never remember working on them either. So they can't be as bad as we assume. They invented the first Ever Sharp pen and the first camera phone.

@@12voltvids I'd be interested in you doing a video on what your process is as regards capturing Firewire. I've struggled with it. I can capture s-video, composite, but I've never done SDI - which to me seems the obvious thing to do if you have DV / HDV VTRs with SDI. Ive just bought Dvd-R with Firewire. So, I'm going to try that out and see how good/bad it is to edit from the dvd image. My SONY DSR20P VTR has s-video and composite out, but I get no joy with Firewire since moving to Win 10. Although I do have a win 7 desktop hanging around, because I'm now loathe to ditch gear. I'm going to see if i can get that running dual boot with XP to see it that resolves the problem. To be honest, I did momentarily get the firewire going, but win 10 doesn't recognise my camera or vtr, and I thing this is where the problem lies. I've tried loads od drivers. Legacy is said to be the driver that will work for some people with SONY gear. Another suspicion is my pc. It has problems even with usb 3. Our technician just switched it off as it causes crashes. I was £400 lighter after he finished working on my pc and it still isn't doing what it should.
Anyway, I'm not looking for solutions. I've spent over a year on it. But I'm interested in the gear you would use if someone (you) want to archive a MiniDV tape.
Enjoying seeing you work on old gear. I was told BetaCam can't edit drop in edits that are very short. I had done an edit and I was abruptly told to re-edit it, as I had left a "breath noise" in the edit. I was told I couldn't edit it out, that I'd have to do a new edit. Ten minutes later, I presented the new version, as I was able to drop into the audio and take the breath out. I found BetaCam good to work with.

I can do that but it is pretty straight forward. My PC is a windows 7 box. I use a gy- hd7000 but I can also plug in my hdrfx1 or hdrhc3 camera into the FireWire port on computer. I open the capture window in premiere and select dv or HDV mode. Never had any issues. That's one of the reasons i am in no rush to upgrade my PC.
