i have to admit, it is the best working Sharp I have seen. Shame the VCR days have all but gone!

I have VC-H993. It's has super fast rewind and made in 1999! I was wondering why it said s-vhs, but could never find information about it, or why it was never made a big deal about. So you saying that it actually played the s-vhs tapes makes me happy and vindicated that it actually meant what it says! ❤️

I had one similar to this in the 80s, it was awesome in terms of pause and frame stepping.

I found a sharp vc h280 couple of years ago at yard sale for 25 cents and it came with original remote. To my amazement it worked except for the RF out put which doesn't work.

This video actually helped because I had intended to do the same thing with my Sharp VC-H813 VCR, but little did I know, it was optical and had no mode switch in it.

Yeah, took me ages to figure out there was no mode switch.

It was super vhs, but it was not super as the consumer was not interested in buying SVHS and no films released on SVHS, so basically it flopped and made losses...

For a super vhs tape on an hdtv; that looks pretty freaking good.

I have the same vcr that is doing the same thing. Power light is flashing. I guess I am going to have to tear it down. Thanks for sharing. :)

I used to have a Sharp with that same mechanism. Didn't know about that optical mode sensor, that's a great idea. Too bad more VCRs didn't have that.

    • @12voltvids

Well they burn out. JVC originally used optical sensors.

Damn I dumped on 2 VCR's that I should have hung on to to get fixed. Still kicking myself like 15yrs later.

Guides not fully retracted is correct and normal for this mid-90s Sharp mechanism design.

I've got an older sharp vcr (vc-m303), but the chassis looks exactly the same. On mine, it turns on but just flashes the time, can't get to to load a tape or do anything else. I have already changed a bunch of caps which the esr was too high on, but still no luck. Can't figure it out. It worked, then didn't, then did, then didn't, now nothing. Was hoping, as a long time viewer, you would magically have the same problem and teach me how to fix it! But you fixed yours and mine is still in bad shape. I'll keep trying tho i'm out of ideas at the moment. Still, great to see you working on something I have looked at myself. Thanks for all the great content :)

Blimey, Sharp were never the most expensive of machines, but by God had they become cheap by the time that one was made.

And yet i find this one to be impressive with the optical mode encoder switch and the capability to play svhs tapes. This is really all one needs for archiving any VHS tape. Not quite up to full svhs but still does a fine job

I have a sharp vcr with similar chassis.the fault is it takes the tape but doesn't complete the loading cycle.it gets 3 quarters of the way then takes the tape back to the start.ive tried a different chassis from a similar sharp vcr and having the same issue.ive no idea what could be causing the fault.

I got a emerson EWC1303 TV/VCR Combo On Ebay For $155.32 total but it has a strange problem. DOES NOT EAT THANKFULLY, but usually when i try to reverse search it, it would still play and no sound and then it went into emergency shutdown, ejected it, but did not eat. Possible bad soldier connections on both the 2 sensors or a mode switch problem.

When I had VCRs the flashing power button usually meant that the VCR was in standby mode with an active program but no tape inserted (when the VCR was functioning normally, that is.)

    • @12voltvids

This one would not initially turn on. I powered it down opened it, powered back up and it turned on. Was sure it would be a mode switch and it doesn't have one.

I think this is the first VCR I see which has no display on the front but only some status leds. I only saw that on cheap VHS video players.

The MX1 is something I know very little about, other than how to work it as I used one in my linear edit suite 25 years ago

Well that was an odd one, i've had a few bits of gear that self repair, i could never trust them after that.
Hmm an optical mode switch, much better :-D

I look inside Sharp and think there is not enough inside to make them work, always thought they lacked enough parts. Not a fan of Sharp, but that is just a personal thing.

I was never a fan but i have a monitor that is old as the hills and works perfect. It is left running 24/7 on my security camera DVR.

"Betamax" and "eBay" are two words that don't go together. Even low-end models are selling for more than $500, and reasonably-priced ones are either untested or fubar.

Betamaxs in Europe seem to be much more reasonable on Ebay, usually only double figure Euros.

Lol. An SL-T50ME is currently on ebay for 1600 euros. I got an untested one for 50 euros locally and it just worked...
