    Today, let's explore a word that is frequently used by Italians: "magari." The word "magari" can be somewhat confusing for learners because it has multiple meanings. In this lesson, I will clarify these meanings and show you how to differentiate between them so you can use "magari" accurately in your Italian conversations.

    One of the great things about your teaching is the split screen with the typed words on the left. This helps me immensely because I learn very strongly through reading.

    I tend to use magari more than forse and probably use it where I shouldn't. It is, for some reason, easier for me to remember magari. I often say it when someone asks me if I have the right change or just a general maybe.

      Molto interessante, Anna! Yes, in those situations we wouldn't actually use "magari". As I explain in the video, it's mostly used for the specific case of proposing/suggesting something.

    Could you also do a video on "comunque"? I hear it a lot when Italians speak to each other, but it seems in most cases not to have the standard dictionary meaning of "anyway". Is it just a more elaborate way of saying "ma"?

    I did always think that Magari means perhaps but it is i bit confusing that it is also "I wish"
    For example
    Do you wish to go to holiday?
    You can answer
    I wish (i can't but i want to go)
    It is almost confusing as "Kako da ne" in my language which can be somthing like "Yes for sure" or "No way" depending on the way you say it, literal translation to English is "How yes no 😂"
    Forse seems much more clear than Magari in terms of meaning.
    Perhaps (I am not sure if i can go but if there is a chance i will go)
    So both can be "Magari"

    There is word in greek which comes from ancient greece "Μακάρι" and it shows desire which is one of the definitions but we don't have the rest definitions and that confused me because i thought it was just a greek word in italian but its fused with other meanings.

      @@ItalianTeacherValentina What tips do you have for reading Italian stories. I listen to Italian conversations, music, "shadow" repeat phrases and words, I try reading along as I listen to Italian. But when I try reading with no sounds or repeat phrases I struggle. I watched your video on Italian alphabet and sounds and I repeat after you pronounce sounds. Very challenging.

    Is there a danger when using Magari that the person asking the question will not know whether the answer is an enthusiastic “perhaps” or a definite “I would love to “? Darryl (complete beginner!)

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  3 місяці тому

      Buona domanda, Darryl! Although it could be possible, it's not very likely. We use "magari" as "peraphs" mostly when we are proposing something, and "magari" as "I'd wish/I'd love to" when replying enthusiastically to someone else's proposal or statement. Also the tone and the context will make it more clear.

    For the third usage of magari, you stated that it must be used with the subjunctive, but you instead used the past perfect subjunctive in your example. Which tense should I use?

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  3 місяці тому

      I intentionally referred to the subjunctive mode in general, as many of my followers are beginners and not familiar with it. The subjunctive mode consists of 4 tenses (present, past, imperfect and past perfect). For the third usage of magari we usually use the past perfect subjunctive.

    Magari potremmo andare al cinema domani.
    Indica un auspicio, è una frase propositiva positiva, cioè chi la proferisce auspica che questa possibilità possa accadere perchè desiderata.
    Forse potremmo andare al cinema domani.
    Indica una possibilità neutra, chi la propone lo fa senza desiderare che venga accettata ma la propone come una possibilità uguale ad altre possibili scelte. "Forse" sottintende una possibilità non desiderata e non certa perchè, ad esempio, potrebbero esserci altri impegni ulteriori che potrebbero impedire di andare al cinema. Quindi si dice "forse" quando in una giornata piena di impegni volendo cercare uno spazio per il divertimento si propone, dubitando, ci possa essere il tempo per andare al cinema.
    Quindi "magari" generalmente indica una preferenza, un ideale, un buon auspicio. Magari vincessi una grossa cifra al gioco del Lotto! Magari!!
    Forse è dubitativa e mette in risalto l'incertezza che quello che viene detto nella frase possa accadere. Forse potrei vincere una grossa cifra se giocassi al gioco del Lotto. Eh!...Forse...

    Prevzeto iz ben. it. magari ‛čeprav’. V južnejših it. narečjih in tudi v knjiž. jeziku je magari medmet, ki izraža močno željo ali upanje. To je izposojeno iz gr. makári ‛da bi le’. Beseda je izpeljanka iz gr. mákar, makários ‛srečen, blažen, svet’. Izhodiščni pomen si lahko predstavljano *‛če Bog (ali svetnik) tako hoče’ (CZ, 699).
