    Today's Video is special for two reasons. The first is taking a look at the newly released Timex Marlin Automatic. The 40mm bigger brother to the Marlin Mechanical re-issue from last year. Model TW2T22700ZV ( TW2T22700Z )
    The second, is that this marks the one year anniversary of Relative Time. It's been a crazy year, but thank you all for joining me on this nutty journey.

    Congratulations on your success! I enjoy your reviews because you are very open minded, detailed and fair. I agree with you regarding the date window. That beautiful dial does not need it at all. This is a watch I would consider for my collection, after seeing in person that is. Here’s to another year! 🍻

    The Timex Marlin was the second watch I ever owned back in the 1960s. My first watch, a cheap Swiss made one given to me by my grandfather, stopped working and I remember getting its replacement that Marlin for Christmas in 1968. I really liked that watch. It was tough, inexpensive, and above all it worked. Unfortunately the wrist band must have broken because I lost it and I remember being heartbroken. For Christmas in 1971 I was given another Timex mechanical and it soldiered on until my father gave me his old but beautifully functioning Timex Electric in the mid '70s.
    I still have the non-functioning Swiss watch my grandfather gave me as well as the second Timex and that Electric my parents gave me but I still miss that lovely cheap Marlin with its silver dial.
    I've thought about buying a Marlin this past year but considering the price I won't (for the present) as it does not match the $12 Canadian value the original once did. As you said there are many other watches that have the same movement for the fraction of the price. But still, to have one for nostalgia reasons...that is tempting.
    And, congratulations on your first anniversary of Relative Time! I've always enjoyed your well made videos that are high on content but low on the horological snobbery common to some watch channels.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      Thank you. Nostalgia is the key selling point here. How do you think this dial, or the smaller mechanical silver dials compare to the originals?

    • @Retired_Gentleman
      @Retired_Gentleman 5 років тому

      @@RelativeTime Looks-wise they are a true homage to the 1960s Timex Marlin watch. The silver sunburst dial, the hands, the domed crystal, are very good copies of the original style. Same holds true for the shape of the watch case other than they are larger in diameter and made of stainless steel rather than the alloy of the originals. Price though is not a copy of the 1960's Marlins.

    Thank you for the review. I just bought a 40mm Marlin with the Snoopy Earth logo. I bought it for the history and nostalgia of the watch and I love the minimalist design. It reminds me of my father's watch that is sadly missing. I have been wearing mostly Rolex and Omega for he past 25 years, but after I saw the update after recently reviewing watches this was the one that drew me in the most. Wearing it now for a few days, I'll post an update in a year or two :) Thank you again :)

    @GenWivern2 5 років тому

    Happy anniversary! I've only just arrived at this channel, but the effort you put into these videos is obvious, and much appreciated. Today's Timex took me right back to circa 1974 and my first watch, and I'd totally have one of these because it's so reminiscent except for the date window. They could lose that and improve the look if you ask me, but otherwise it's the usual Timex trick of getting dials just right without appearing to try very hard. Not quite convinced by the Snoopy version because my head has been turned by the set of four quartz Peanuts watches with matching straps, for roughly the same outlay, here in the UK at least.

      Ohh.. I don't know about that omega watch..but it is same like Daniel Wellington is good, over priced go for brand with heritage..It should be go for heritage that is not overpriced..(invincta rant)..Timex marlin reissue or this automatic are actually overpriced..paying for heritage instead of movement and quality case..I don't know why people blindly buy Timex marlin ,just because it is Timex?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      Thanks. I think I've seen those 4 peanuts models. There is also a very nice looking Snoopy Welton

    My Bambino v3 has a similar looking "scratch" on the sunburst dial that I also didn't notice till I started photographing it. The dial looks very similar to the one on my Guanqin. Your videos have had a steady improvement, but even when I discovered your channel early on I was always impressed with the quality of them, you've got a pretty rare combination of good production skills and horological knowledge.

    Firstly happy 1st birthday!🎂 Thank you for a great channel. Whilst I do like the watch and like the idea of an automatic Timex, as you mention, the price is a sticking point. I love the Miyota movement. I have the same in a Citizen (getting quite rare now, an Automatic Citizen, mostly seem to be Eco-drive) and I have no issues. It's very accurate. Yes hacking would be nice, and yes I guess it is a noisy rotor but honestly in everyday use unless you have ears like an owl or bat, or you specifically listen to it, I really don't think it's a problem. As said it's a good watch, but not at that price for me. Look forward to your next year of videos mate ⌚⌚⌚⌚

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

    Having worked in the industrial broadcast arena, I can tell you that compared to many other review channels, you certainly DO know what you're doing. You're direct, succinct, clearly intelligible, and do not make your presentations overly long by including a lot of unnecessary small talk. Nor do you stammer or insert a lot of "you-knows" or otherwise dead air. And as far as the Marlin is concerned, given its price, I'd rather a Bambino.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому +1

      Thank you, I appreciate it. I started this without any real experience, so I’ve been trying to learn as I go. Although I have to credit the lack of stammering do to editing them out of the audio. But hearing “ummm” and “like” all the time is a big pet peeve of mine. As well as a jump cut while someone is talking. It’s normal for youtube, but it bothers me. Always reminds me of max headroom from the 80s.

      @@RelativeTime I own the Timex Marlin, the silver/champagne sunburst that was their first reissue, and it's a jewel. Small, yes, but it adds to the charm. Granted, I've got a slender wrist to begin with, but as with many things in life, you quickly grow accustomed to it. Plus, the narrative (Timex's first mechanical piece in decades) and the historical reference ("this is what watches looked like in the 1960s, etc.") make it easy to overcome the feeling that its size is a detriment . . . to the contrary, its a LARGE part of what gives the watch character, what makes it stick out, so to speak. Still, I wouldn't pay full price for either of the Marlin or the new Timex automatics. I think around BF there was a 30% off sale from Timex or Todd Snyder or something. Might want to keep an eye out for that next year.

    In the beginning of the video, you said 34 mm Marlin used a "off brand" movement. No, it is using a Seagull movement and Seagull is one of the biggest and decent manufacturers. Actually, i think Seagull ST6 in the 34 mm and Miyota 8215 is about the same quality. But i wish they use at least Seiko NH35 or better Seagull movement like 19 or 21 series. Marlins are beautiful watches that i would willing to buy them at higher prices with better movements. Especially i would love a Seagull ST19 in a 40 mm Marlin. Seagull ST19 is really a great for its price. It is a column wheel chronograph but i think Timex can mod it for Marlin. It would be wonderful.

    Generally agree with you but I think they missed the mark with this one. I’m old enough to remember seeing and wearing Marlins as a kid. They were never this bulky, I’m glad they increased the size from the earlier manual wind model but 38mm would’ve been more than enough given the fairly thin bezel.
    Also there’s a major glaring issue I don’t think you mentioned, the hands are much too short for the dial, not coming close to the hour/minute markers. Maybe if they’d made it 38mm it would’ve worked out 😆

      In the meantime, Barton makes one that looks like that. But it has the fabric loop, instead of the metal rings on the end. So right now that's the closest you can get.

I'll also be doing a give-a-way on those straps as well. So if you tune in there is a chance to win that one. Ironically the one sent to me by Ritche doesn't seem to exist on their website or Amazon as well. So no idea why I keep getting them.

    Vostok makes a really nice mechanical watch ("Classica") similar to the Marlin, with superior build quality at $50-75 less than the MSRP of the Timex. The Russian 2409A hand wind movement can be adjusted to run with the best of them in terms of accuracy. I've got mine down to 7 seconds/day. I don't doubt that Vostok will eventually make an auto version of the same series with their 2416B movement, which is a very rugged and reliable workhorse.meranom.com/en/vostok/vostok-classica/vostok-watch-classica-690b22.html

    An older video but interesting. I will confess to having a soft spot for Timex, and I have two Timex beater watches. My daily wear-to-work watch is a grey and silver Weekender on an aftermarket grey silicone strap. So I'm not a big time watch snob. That said, I think the Marlin is kind of a swing-and-a-miss for Timex. Sure, the name still endures if name alone is a link to their horological history. But it's kind of a disappointing watch to me. Timex mechanicals of the past were pretty innovative albeit not of heirloom quality. It seems like taking a bottom drawer (yet decent) Miyota movement and sticking it in a Chinese case and selling it for twice the price of an Orient Bambino is kind of a ripoff, especially considering that the $120 Bambino has an in-house movement (!).
    IMO if Timex wants to get in on the contemporary automatic market they need to aim a bit higher. It would be nice to see them make an in-house movement. Yeah yeah, I know...supposedly this would cost a billion dollars, etc. I'm dubious of that. Granted they probably don't have any tooling left over nor anyone on staff that knows how to actually build a mechanical watch movement. But Timex is still a pretty huge company. It seems like they could CAD/CAM some kind of a basic movement. If the Chinese can build a movement and stick in a complete watch, sell it for $20 USD and still make a profit then Timex has no excuses even if labor costs are a lot higher here.
    Still, great video. I can't bash the quality of your presentation even if I think the watch is a bit underwhelming.

      The me1162 looks to be another watch.
      www.fossil.com/us/en/products/grant-twist-three-hand-blue-leather-watch-sku-me1162p.html
      One of their twists which is sort of an odd watch with 2 movements. A quartz and an auto. Quartz is the watch, but the auto just runs the second hand for show.
      As for the Townsman, it depends on what movement it uses. The problem with many of fossils automatics is that they often use an off brand Chinese movement. Which may not be as reliable. If you can see it in person look at the rotor on the back. If it says Seiko or Miyota, or Japan should be ok.
      Otherwise depends on what type of watch your looking for. Check out Seiko’s line of Seiko 5 watches. Like the Snk809 o4 SNZG15. Lots of others as well.
      Other popular choices are from Orient, like their bambino line. Or their Mako and Ray dive watches.

She says none of her colleagues ever dare to recommend a Timex for the simple fact that they are sure the customer will be bringing it back with complaints or for repair/exchange. Combine all the above with a lack of clear information from Timex (especially for what is inside the case) gives you a good reason to stay away from them. @@zuldo8577 Yes and no... I actually did some research on it trying to figure out what it is, and why people kept saying I was doing it.
      Vocal Fry has been around a long time. In the past, it was actually a good thing, associated with some great newscasters and presenters. In more recent history it's become notorious because of the Kardashians. And notorious because for young women have started imploying it, not necessarily men.
      Heck I even found an article talking about how Vin Diesel has the "perfect vocal fry"
      The thing for me, is that I'm about a decade and a half older then that, so this is just how I talk. The thing is I'm not sure I'm doing it, or I just have a deep voice. Like, say Howard Stern, Vin Diesel, or Bruce Willis. Or perhaps even Sean Connery or Patrick Stewart. If I try to imitate a Kardashian it sounds and feels very different in my throat but who knows.
      Honestly, I originally tried to do the whole "WHAT'S UP EVERYONE" , but it wasn't me. Felt totally fake. Plus I look at these as more mini-documentaries, and most of my public speaking comes from academic circles doing scientific presentations. So I said screw it, might as well just be myself. Keep it real so to speak, and honestly, it's working.
      Looking at the show Top Gear, I'd love to be Jermy Clarkson, or Richard Hammond. But the reality is I'm more James May. People like different things. So for every comment, I get telling me I'm boring. I have a bunch more telling me they love my narration. I've got comparisons ranging from Rod Sterling (twilight zone), Morgan Freeman, Ray Liotta (in goodfellas), and Christan Bale (in American Pysco, which I'm not sure is a good thing).
      To be honest I can't think of any Norwegian or German actors in general. But Jean Claude Van Dame (Belgian) and Mads Mikkelsen (Dannish) may have it to. Although again, not sure if it's that or just a deep voice. Anyway, much longer response then you were expecting, but thanks for the reply. Cheers!

      Deep voice and vocal fry is different. Vocal fry is when you speak with barely any force at all, with a relaxed throat, and get the popping sound/air bubbles that I do find quite annoying.

    Congrats on the milestone.
    Here's the first video of yours I've watched, around 6-7 months ago. I loved it :)

    Best wishes and enjoy your journey in watches. Don't take this as a job, it becomes a burden very fast.

      Ahh the Citizen avion video. I think that was one of my first videos to be ranked at the top when people searched for it. I still need to get another flieger.
      Right now it’s still a fun hobby, which is why I usually limit to one video a week. Occasionally 2. I don’t know how some of the other channels can crank out 3+ videos a week on a regular basis.

      Yes, the Avion video :)
      Actually that's one of the videos you've made in a bit of a different style, vlog+static scenes. Definitely has a charm of it's own.
      About the pushing videos often, well it becomes full time job, which in the start seems nice, but after a while it wears you down and you get burned.
      Everyone to his merits though, w/e floats your boat :)

    Pay 250$ for acrylic

      I was going to say that you should expect more at this price. But then I remembered that many omega speedmasters have acrylic (hesalite)

      @@RelativeTime Not really and my comment was not about its size. It's the overall design of this watch that I find to be too simplified. Looks cheap and common to me. I would not want this particular Timex even if someone offered it to me for free.

    Hey, congratulations on your first year. I like your reviews a lot and we seem to have a similar taste in watches as well. Looking forward to year 2! Now, regarding this watch: check out this review (teardown) in which you can see how very poor the quality is of this watch. Also QC is terrible. For what it is, is terribly overpriced! Any Seiko or Orient will give you way better value for money as you conclude too. It looks like Timex was too greedy with this watch and just wanted to cash in on the retro/vintage trend... I'm going to skip this one! Btw: I own a Waterbury (blue) too 😎 ua-cam.com/video/M7wGL2M4vtE/v-deo.html

      Thank you. The value (if any) is in the nostalgia. And if your not someone who cares, then there are a lot better options. I’m thinking they rushed these to market, which might explain some of the Qc issues.
      Decent video, very detailed with the microscope. I’m a little surprised he’s so focused on the movement quirks. The noisy rotor, lack of hacking, and stuttering second hand are all part of the design. But for the price, a seiko nh35 would of been more appropriate. Cheers!

    TIMEX is a Dutch-based company wholly owned by a Norwegian holding company that has no horological legacy and exerts little influence on the business units' development. As a result, R&D for the Group's watches are virtually nil, and all the innards and movements are foreign OEM, i.e. China. Nothing 'wrong' with that if only the best of what the Chinese have developed is used, but this is never the case. There is no way any watch expert can say anything of the 'collectibility' of such pieces. It just busts the credibility of that 'expert'. TIMEX is best placed as a use and throw 'disposable' utilitarian tool. So please don't hype this brand as if it has any 'quality' craftsmanship to its making, comparing it even with Seiko or Orient. Might as well just focus on reviewing China-brand watches full time. Start with the XiaoMi CIGA range.

      You are correct that the parent company is a Norwegian holding company, but here is a story of the man behind that.
      fortune.com/2015/03/07/fred-olsen/
      Bit of an interesting read. Especially the part that says he originally came up with the idea for the Ironman.
      As for the accusations on r&d and manufacturing I won't argue too much as I really don't have any facts on the matter.
      However I can say that I've seen videos of a manufacturing in the Philippines and heard of simmilar facilities in India.
      I've also reviewed the Timex American Documents which is mostly American made with the exception of a swiss movement.
      So at the very least I know there are some exceptions to what you have said.

    They will never improve on the original designs due to modern day technology, as there was nothing on those watches that say ‘vintage’, as all do was shine a little too much, they were now too big and bulky and overpriced.

    In my experience, Timex is basically a joke. Overpriced, poorly assembled pieces with laughable specs and pompous names, worth 10% at best of the asking price.
    LE they got Indiglo right, but that's about it.
