    Think the thing I love most about this Sunbaru, is its 'does exactly what it say's on the tin' approach to its design and function. Eg. This button is snow and dirt, this button is snow and mud, pick one, no complications, actually a breath of fresh air in a market of competing technology. Excellent review!

    Great to see a review of the "non-mainstream" brands 👍🏽 Here in south africa the subarus are definitely not popular (German SUVs dominate the market). Certainly Subaru has a much better perceived reliability here in SA.

    Thank you, Thomas! I have the MY18 and I am very satisfied with it. I made a test drive with the new e-boxer. As you said, it is a little better drive in the new model, but it is very familiar with the predesessor. From the aspect of saving petrol, it is not worth for me to make an upgrade to the e-boxer model, but I like the new one definitely! I am not sure what I should do. Greatings from a subaru-fanboy!

    Bought the Forester 3 months ago. Previously I owned a Volvo v70, a BMW series 3, a range rover sport. I love the Subaru! The driving experience on sport mode on twisty roads is quite impressive for a 2.0 litre non turbo engine. The AWD of Subaru is impressive. The big windows offer great view and nice feeling. The eyesight system works perfectly on adaptive cruise control and lane assist. Eyesight on Greek roads where the lane signs are poor works very well. It feels and it looks manufactured in Japan 100%. The cons is the electric motor is really low power. Summertime when you have the a/c on the car rarely drives on EV.

    I'm surprised you find the Subaru mild hybrid to be so similar to Toyota's system. I test-drove the e-Boxer Subaru XV the same day as a Hybrid RAV4 (dealership didn't have the e-Boxer Forester in yet, but it's the same engine) and the difference was night and day. The torque delivered from the Toyota electric engine made a real difference when taking off from the lights, could go longer on battery power, CVT never droned going up hill.
    Needless to say, we ended up ordering the Toyota.

    I like Subaru as a car brand - the models are quirky, different and generally have good durability. In many ways, Subaru is a bit like Citroën, but with a significantly better reputation for durability. Still, I like the approach both brands have to not be sports oriented and far from snobbish. Instead, it is about getting the job done, but with certain peculiarities and facilities that few other car brands have (eg the large window areas). Thank you for also showing us cars like this. Keep up the good work :)

    I love the large windows and I think it is one area where European and Japanese cars have gotten worse, not better. Back in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and even 1990s, European cars had excellent visibility. Then the windows started to shrink in the name of aerodynamics and style. This car has big windows and sort of a tall wagon shape. I think it's a tall wagon that could be considered an SUV, but it still shows its tall wagon origin.

  • @7hr3sh

    Thank you, Thomas. Very informative review and I tend to agree with you about I guess everything. We've bought one recently as a primary family vehicle. I cannot say this is the car I would buy for myself, but family wise it simply is a great choice. Large and easy accessible trunk, great interior space, perfect visibility, inside it looks and feels well built, driver monitoring system is actually quite good as you simply jump into car and it automatically adjusts seats, mirrors, climate and radio. I didn't pay attention at first, but it's very helpful when you have kids and two drivers using car. I should also mention that suspension is excellent and car behaves very well in snowy and icy conditions and is great on gravel roads. Fuel consumption is 8,8 l per 100 km in mostly city driving. I believe if the car was used only by me fuel consumption would be lower, as wife is quite an aggressive driver. Driver assistance systems that are connected to cameras like adaptive cruise control, collision prevention and lane keep assist, etc, work great (car beeps and breaks itself), however will turn off during extreme weather conditions like thunderstorms with shower rains and when it's heavy snowing, ie when visibility is very poor.
    I would definitely recommend Subaru Forester for families living in rural or suburban areas, obviously if you can live with slow acceleration and somewhat annoying engine sound at high revolutions.

    Subaru and Mitsubishi are both a shame with the way they've went in the recent decades, the BRZ was a happy blip but besides that both are stuck making outdated cars that are heavily unpopular in Europe. Subaru is probably a bit worse off, however since at least Mitsubishis are extremely reliable. Even Lancia sold double the amount of cars compared to Subaru last year and Lancia only sells one model and only in Italy. On the other hand, great to see a full length review of a less popular car brand!

    Personally, it does not matter that much how a vehicle looks, especially if it is an SUV. If it does what it is set out to do better than the relative competition and is in my price point, then I will buy. Usually the interior feel, comfort, build quality (relative to the price) and materials used is most important to me. And of course...how it drives. Substance over style. That is why I absolutely love the GLB a little more than the GLC in terms of being an SUV and compromise.
    Cheers, Thomas. 😎

    good review Thomas, always like a Subaru/Ford/Mazda review. Loving my 2019 Outback, better engine (2.5L) than the 2.0L petrols used by the rest of the Subaru range. Eyesight safety system has saved me several times in the last 10 months.
    Turbo's definitely needed, to reduce fuel consumption and improve performance, but at least the Subaru petrol engines perform better then the under-powered Mazda ones. Still the odd omission of a heated steering wheel option on all new Subaru's in UK, except the Forester! One of the first things i upgraded on my Outback, was the interior bulbs to LED, including the door puddle lights, can't believe they still fit poor halogen bulbs still in 2020.

    Thank you Thomas a great review but a little disappointed. The Subaru Forester is renowned for its safety features and go anywhere off road capability. It's not designed for town or city use. I was surprised you didn't know the battery and motor are from Toyota as they have shares in Subaru.
    This vehicle is aimed at more rural people than city dwellers, so hence my disappointed there was no off road segment.
    On a personal level, I think the battery and electric motor are too small and the fuel consumption is about average for vehicles of this type.
    I'm surprised you didn't mention reverse and cross traffic automatic braking. But, on the whole a good presentation. 👍

      Subaru has a coolness factor that almost no other brand has. You can be a serious car guy but nobody will think you are, you can spend a good chunk of cash on an Outback and nobody will think you're trying to show off.

    I like Subaru, I hate Subaru's management!
    There is an XV PHEV in the USA for $35k. That drivetrain should be offered in the People's Republic of Europe as well, on all Subaru models! Subaru already has the technology developed!
    The new hybrid system is based on two electric motors, the same as Toyota. It'll have symmetrical AWD. It suits Forester and Outback better than XV.
    I do not understand why Subaru let e-boxer to the market. The idea is good, the delivery terrible. It shakes, the gasoline engine is too small and the electric motor has a whopping 13HP and 65Nm. :(
    There is also no spare tire.
    There is a heated steering wheel offered in Forester in Japan.
    As I said, Subaru's management is so strange. They are destroying a decent niche car manufacturer.

      I loved my 2002 Forester that could go anywhere a Jeep could go. They chased the soccer mom market and it has ballooned out in size and the capability has gone all to hell. I am with you on the lack of a spare tire (unacceptable for anything that goes off road or on unimproved roads). I hate leather seats and hard plastic interiors and cladding and garish chrome.
      It is a SLOWbaru.

    Like many commenters on here I think this is a very weird looking car and far too “American” in its styling for my European tastes. Subaru is one of those brands that I’m very glad exists for variety and consumer choice, but I can’t imagine ever buying one myself! Which I sort of feel guilty about because we all know how hard life is for small manufacturers.

    • @DavGreg
      @DavGreg 4 роки тому

      That is not American styling- that is the garish crap coming from Japan and Korea. The Americans brands copied the ugly Japanese styling.

  • @DavGreg
    @DavGreg 4 роки тому +1

    It is really sad what Subaru has done to the Forester line. What was once a compact tall wagon with AWD has become a huge, garish, heavy soccer-mom mobile. It has also succumbed to the garish gargoyle styling cues so common in Japanese cars these days.
    Each generation of the Forester has become larger than the last, less off road capable than the last and more expensive than the last. The CVT is a total snooze fest for anyone expecting responsive driving as is the combination of an extreme heavy crossover and an underpowered motor.
    What Thomas calls “conservative” styling I call garish. Gargoyle taillights, way too much cladding, busy lines in the body and the details of the dashboard. Less is more and the dash looks like it was lifted from a 1980’s Pontiac. Less bling, fewer lines please.
    And it is immoral to charge 40k+ (Euros or Dollars) and not give thermostatic AC or to use hard plastics on interior trim.
    No thanks. I loved my old Subaru Forester I had a decade ago, but this thing is just an underpowered minivan with regular doors.

    With crappy aged engines (150hp will be a super slug on the route) , unreliable CVT transmission and to sum it up dated, shiny plastic interior.... Hybrid to overcome EU CO2 taxes won't help reliability...
    A big 0/10 for that car..

    Yet another reviewer who doesn't seem to understand what Subaru stands for. The design is not dated, its a utilitarian durable and long lasting car that doesn't try to be something it isnt. Subaru is not about keeping up with fashion trends. Its about being individual, the same as those who buy Subarus. Nothing worse than a review by someone who doesnt like the car or spends all their time finding negative things to say. The roads are filled with the same makes and models, its tedious. People are so afraid of being different. That suits me fine as it makes this car more special with its rarity.

    • @BB-wz6bx
      @BB-wz6bx 2 роки тому

      Thomas is a good reviewer, wtf is this talk about individuality around an Automotive piece? Noone cares what you drive, heck a vast majority of people could not even tell one car from the other.
      The e-boxer is a pointless system only there to satisfy the retarded EU emission regulators choking smaller companies while licking the balls of the german big 3 and other big manufacturers.
      Ever wondered why there are no more new WRX and BRZ yet there are plenty of M models, AMG and S Audi?
      The 30% Bullshit rule made by our dear EU emission tards is the answer.

    Subaru brands themselves as the “save the world we love the outdoors” car company...yet they make garbage hybrids and sell gas powered cars. What is the point of this e-hybrid boxer drivetrain? It adds weight and does not deliver any positive change to mpg. They need to invest in proper electric architecture.
