All hail His Majesty, Ilya of Baltimore Knife & Sword, First of His Name, King of the Blacksmiths and the Engravers, Lord of the smithy, and Protector of the Shop.
It's heartwarming to see that these skills won't be lost to time. It takes a real master to look at a flat piece of metal, a rack of small chisels, and a two-ounce hammer and say 'Yeah...I got this.'
And so it is shown, Ilya is truly the God of the forge Though you have to give some serious props to Matt, its difficult to imagine how nerve wracking it would be putting a grinding belt anywhere near those engravings
Nice job guys, props to Ilya on the engraving, props to Matt for the grinding. I don't think a majority of your fans realize quite how difficult blacksmithing is, I've been a blacksmith for about 4 years now and all I can say is props to you guys.
Same about being a blacksmith. These guys are just next level. It's quite nice to see how the pros do it. I actually learned some of the techniques I used to make my first shield and helmet from watching these guys.
Same here. I would like to do something like this myself, but getting started with smithing seems really difficult, and since I'm in my graduation year, I doubt that I even have time to properly practice. :I
Barghest Blue it wouldn't be possible for someone who has not been trained, they don't explain all the details of the craft. I've been a blacksmith for about 4 years now and I'm just making my first sword. I would suggest going to your local smith and just asking some questions, just don't be eager to start making swords right away.
Illia is by far the best blacksmith in the world. I would put him up against anyone with both knowledge and talent. He is the sole reason I can't get enough of this show. Pure genious.
Ilya is a god in the forge istg. If I ever made a High Fantasy game, im gonna have a Russian character called Ilya who is the greatest blacksmith in the world who even the dwarves look up to, he's also gonna be an anime lover.
it's interesting to see the guys working, coz you can see they all have a specific role. Kerry is good at the smaller parts of the sword, such as pommels and cross guards, Matt is your guy for grinding and polishing, sometimes drawing out the blade, and Ilya is a jack of all trades and master of all of them. everyone in the shop can do a lot of stuff and they're very good at it, but Ilya is just next level
What I love is the fact that these are not showy replica's. What they create in their shop any ancient king would have gladly carried on their side! I'm always impressed when I see the craftsmanship and the attention to detail that each one of them put into each piece. Stunning isn't a strong enough word.
Indeed, that is the most intricate piece you've done yet. The care put into its making is fitting to a legendary weapon. I would imagine you'd quote a piece like that higher than almost anything else you've made on this show. I probably don't even have the money in savings to match the work you put into that weapon.
Sapheiorus agreed this is their most beautiful piece of work to date. I'd love to see Ilya do more engraving. Plus that last guy cutting the fruit had great edge alignment
Damn i want to see how Ilya made his engraving tools and some basic lesson how to start. It would be so nice to make engravings into projects i make, to spice them up a bit, but i feel spending on ready made tool set is just waste of time and probably does not cut as well...
Any chance of getting a time-lapse of Ilya doing some engraving? It's really cool to see him start and then see it further along, but I would love to see the whole process.
That. Is. Needed. I would like too have stats about the time invested too, and maybe more in-dept about all his engraving tools. There's so many!! Incredible work here, like always.
Fun fact, the sword in the stone, and Excalibur are not the same sword, at least not in the original tellings of Arthurian legend. Excalibur was a gift to Arthur by Nimue, Lady of the Lake. She straight up had Arthur pick up the magic sword from out of the lake where she resided.
Look, strange women lying about in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power should come from a mandate from the masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony.
With all the replicas of Excalibur, all the variations in design I have seen, yours I believe best represents what Excalibur was. Your creation definitely has the magic and represents the pinnacle of the armourers skills. Each of you imbued magic with your skill and sealed it with your living breath and created something greater than the sum of the parts. That sword will always represent Excalibur to me. Well done gentleman, well done.
Different people take charge on different projects. It does seem like Ilya and Matt are the driving force behind most of them, but other members of the team do the majority of the work on other projects some times.
I’ve watched every episode of Man at Arms multiple times. This sword has got to be the most beautiful piece you guys have ever done. Absolutely incredible work all around.
Sometimes I feel bad for Illya cause he has to do almost all of this by himself but he should be very proud of his accomplishments since according to Karry, he's almost completely self taught and he's an absolute master in his craft of both forging and engraving
Troy Stuart You don't earn the title of master smith by being a shmuck. if you think you can do better make one up. As a team they can hold their own against most shops out there.
the materials aren't that expensive but the engraving work is. won't be that high but it would fetch a high price. If you want a comparison, a roman Gladio engraved and with gold details starts at 3.500€
You might want to check the prices on the Baltimore Knife and Sword website. It would be way more 3500 They have a pattern welded Fantasy Hungarian Yatagahn that sells for $2200 and it's detailing is so basic compared to Excalibur. Matt's right, this is the best sword BKS has EVER made. I'd easily pay over $10000 for this sword. With a sword of Excalibur's quality, it's not the cost of the materials you need to worry about. It's the, more than likely, 100's of hours Ilya put into that engraving because that blade, it's fucking gorgeous!!
The sword blade to make itself is something these guys make relatively easily. However the cost of a master engraver's time.... i would estimate somewhere between $5000 - $8000 depending on engraving detail. Well worth it though. Probably their finest build to date.
"And many men say that there is written upon his tomb this verse: Hic iacet Arthurus, rex quondam rexque futurus [Here lies Arthur, the once and future king]." -Thomas Malory
To be honest... If you wield Excaliber you are the one who decides what counts as ending someone rightly. But, then again, no one would expect you to use that trick with a sword like that...
by far although i would have liked it if they had made the handle (is that the word you use in english for the part of the sword where you hold it?) out of leather instead of just wood
Does anyone else agree with me that we would love to see longer editions of these videos? I would 100% totally watch a 6 part two-hour series on the making and assemble of this sword alone.
I watch these videos with pure amazement Ilya absolutely stood out with his engraving skill...and the rest of the crews talent shines also.. To the entire BKS family...your are an inspiration to a generations
I was thinking the exact same thing. I think they should have a episode where he can make is own sword with his own design. However he wants it to look.
nigelft LOL!!! Nobody has recognized my avatar before, well done, Sir! I love that video, I've watched it dozens of times! I chose Sparky, he's just too fricking cute!

Ilya, Matt, and Kerry I believe that all the Glory of Merlin is present with you all! That The Great Architect of the Universe blesses you all!!! From a Brazilian fan, THANK YOU VERY, VERY, MUCH!!!
Bethel Vingthor I don't think they did necessarily. I mean it has a LOT more parts and was obviously way more difficult to assemble, but in terms of how awesome it looks and skill involved I still think this wins. Now obviously I'm not saying Optimus Prime's sword didn't require skill, clearly it was extremely difficult to make. But the sheer amount of detail in the engravings on this blade astonish me to a point where I still don't think they've surpassed it quite yet.
This is a breathtakingly beautiful sword, beautiful details and god level engraving...hands down one of the most stunning swords I've ever seen and it made me kinda emotional at the end when the sword came together, wow!
I can say without hesitation that this is the finest sword Man At Arms has ever produced. If God were an engraver, He would bow down to Ilya's workmanship.
Well of course he's not an engraver considering he's nothing whatsoever. Oh, would that be missing the point? What Yonkage did there is called a metaphor, you know? Rather inane response there then.
You know, Hitodama, it isn't typically a good thing to openly bash religion on the Internet. Unless you *want* to start a flame war, which is... okay, I guess...
Curious if you're referring to me or Yonkage. If it's me you mean, I'll point out that the second bit is actually Greek for "Lord". Such as in "Kyrie eleison" or "Lord, have mercy". Some irony there eh? :V Anywho, I suppose I was a bit "triggered" as they call it over Yayas seemingly missing the point back then. Bashing religion doesn't really matter to me. It just annoys me when it seems human effort and talent is disregarded and/or misattributed to some god instead of the human themselves. And why yes, Hitodama is a "Japanese styled name". Technically it'd be written as 人魂 or ひとだま typically. Refers to souls that have left the body. I'm not Japanese, no. I'm also not Greek. What does that have to do with the name I choose to use though?
I've been really hooked on forging videos ever since I saw a demascus knife. This is by far one of the most amazing and beautifully detailed knives I've ever seen. Ilya is a literal God when it comes to forging and his engraving
Damn Ilya! I did not expect this sword to be so good looking in every single little detail, and all of the parts blend so well! This is definitely the best piece that has been made on this show.
I'm binge watching your seasons now but I just wanted to say every video I see just makes me have more respect and admiration for the work and artistry y'all do. I just get scared when y'all wear shirt sleeves or don't wear gloves.
"Behold! The Sword of Power! The Sword of Kings! Excalibur! Forged when the world was young when bird and beast and flower were one with men and death was but a dream."
I think this is by far the prettiest sword you guys have ever made. Seriously, Ilya is sooo gifted, I was just in awe the whole time he was carving. :O

That's some world class engraving work right there. Good Lord Illia's a patient and methodical man.
They all do great work but damn, that engraving is something else.

Ilya's part elf and part dwarf, it's the only way
Yeah, Mimi, that about sums it up.
Got to be. His dwarf part has to come from Nidavellir. Eitri would be proud.
That Ilya guy is insanely talented
and he is the only one that uses the weapons properly XD
joe shmo nah I'm 14 and I can do better than him it's all about patience and precision
Lucas Beaumont no you can't, you child...
joe shmo he should be the king of Avalon
Rare is the occasion where he is not in an episode XP
This entire video is basically just Ilya flexing on us
Fr
That moment you realize that the reveal song had parts you've never heard before because no other sword has been as amazingly detailed as this one
Yeah I got all emotional at the reveal moment, that sword is gorgeous!
It took me off guard so much tbfh
Beautifull piece!
I've always been such a big fan of Ilya's work. I must say he's not only a great craftsman, but, an amazing artist.
Damn, Ilya was a BEAST this episode. Not to take away from any of the rest of the team, but damn..
He’s the beast every episode
You can't make a sword intricately aesthetic without losing the swords integrity for fighting
Ilya: Give me my engraving tools
Ilya ia the best
It's heartwarming to see that these skills won't be lost to time. It takes a real master to look at a flat piece of metal, a rack of small chisels, and a two-ounce hammer and say 'Yeah...I got this.'
Ilya is a phenomenal blacksmith.

Ilya is COMPLETELY KAWAGANE
Kawagane: the medium hardness steel in Japanese swords?
That's an understatement lol
my god Ilya is simply an artist, I hope you pay him a boatload!
indeed, hes quite the god in the workshop
airforce9872 whatever he's getting paid. I feel like he still needs a raise
I could watch him do his work without any cut just match it with some epic bgm and him explaining with his accent! wish they would upload that :D
airforce9872 I was thinking the same exactly thing
for real
I think this is one of the most beautiful swords that has exited your workshop. Keep up the good work.
Exceptional work. Beautiful sword. I think the sword from King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was best rendition of Excalibur though.
And so it is shown, Ilya is truly the God of the forge
Though you have to give some serious props to Matt, its difficult to imagine how nerve wracking it would be putting a grinding belt anywhere near those engravings

Same here. I would like to do something like this myself, but getting started with smithing seems really difficult, and since I'm in my graduation year, I doubt that I even have time to properly practice. :I
I've never even built popsicle-stick toys and I can tell that wasn't easy AT ALL. Anyone who'd think otherwise is probably a bit insane.

That sword is gorgeous, omg. Extreme props to Ilya, that was a lot of engraving, masterfully done!

Mad props on the uniform engraving work. That takes serious skill.

Out of everything you’ve made, I want this sword the most. So beautiful. This and dawnbreaker
This sword is immaculate and totally beautiful! Thank y’all for this amazing sword!
Any chance of getting a time-lapse of Ilya doing some engraving? It's really cool to see him start and then see it further along, but I would love to see the whole process.
That would be cool, indeed

this show is just Ilya doing the whole thing
BazookaAce I think grinding is quite hard but boring to watch so they just cut matts work out.
Yeah, Matt puts in a lot of effort for pretty much every blade they make.
Fittneskick803 that is true, i just revise. Ilya and Matt carry the team

NITESCIENTIST same
I'd invest for that school to be built. Only if I had the money.

I think this, The Witcher swords and Altairs sword are the most beautiful pieces the guys have made so far. So much talent!
yall should do a MAN AT ARMS sword kinda like a freestyle.
Oh! Have each of them make a sword for themselves, that represents who they are, sorta thing?!
Awesome idea

And why yes, Hitodama is a "Japanese styled name". Technically it'd be written as 人魂 or ひとだま typically. Refers to souls that have left the body. I'm not Japanese, no. I'm also not Greek. What does that have to do with the name I choose to use though?
I want to see a "MAN AT ARMS" sword, stick your logo on it and make something awesome, your own inspiration!
Ilya is a brilliant artist.

On an entirely different note: I always like watching Ilya engrave, because it's always beautiful when he's done.

When they revealed the sword at the end I got chills. Such a beautiful sword.
