    This is like if a long-boarder in surfing tried to judge a short board based on how good of a long board it is.
    Two completely different genres of riding in the same sport.

    Based on their name (New Schoolers), their attire, and the way they ski, they obviously focus first on park performance and then on powder (freeride), and lastly on piste. I like it even though I never focus on park performance and don't care about it. Gives a new prespective versus the majority of the content out there. Their focus is on freestyle skis that have some other limited uses. Their choices are great skis if your preference is at higher speeds (about 30+ mph) to more slide down the mountain rather than carve. With that said... New Schoolers need to add much more context to their videos. I found it impossible to carve the Bent 100 at higher speed (40+ mph). The tails are worthless (way too much of a double rocker shape). They should have explained it as one of the best carvers they tested (at slow to moderate speeds) for a ski that is also very foregiving and useful in the park. I guess I would say the opposite of their focus regarding all mountain skis would be the Nordica Unleashed 98. While it is a twin tip and functional for switch and park use (demanding in the park per Jeff at Ski Essentials), the primary benefits are on piste (long effective edge) and in the trees and powder less than 6". That is why I love the Unleashed skis... Their natural state is to be a great carver but then you can consciously (with a little effort) make them playful and moderately smeary off piste. The choices by New Schoolers are the opposite of that. My own criticism is that they should accurately explain their starting point with their choices.

    This has the vibes of road biker in lycra moaning about how a downhill bike would be to heavy for their use.
    You said it yourself, you don't do much touring, you don't ski in the park, you don't do freeride. These guys are just trying to have some fun, don't be so dogmatic.
    Also, NS community has been there for over 25 years, it's a part of skiing history by now. Even though you come from a race background, there are other ways of approaching the mountain. Shock and horror, carving might not be the main priority.
    Someone skiing 50/50 park/offpiste would of course consider this when buying a new pair.
    Although I will credit you in taking the lesser dogmatic approach in saying that they might enjoy carving if they tried a narrower ski. As an aging park rat I am willing to extend my hand to by saying yes, carving is also fun. Skiing is about having fun after all, isn't it?

      Fair take on the carving part. I guess racing and park/freestyle can be set up as a venndiagram where the overlap in the middle is where we find sloppy carving and high risk low reward jumping.
      This is however also where a lot can be learned, and the fun begins!

    As someone who's snowboarded for a long time and recently picked up a pair of twigs. I think the optimal all mountain ski is 102 underfoot. Park skis have been getting wider, more stable, big long carves feel like you're longboard surfing, better variable performance. It's just such a fun size

    Being a forum dweller at newschoolers and being a very different skier from you, i must say that you are not looking at other aspects of skiing than your own. Newschoolers is mainly a park fucused forum. And recent trends in park skiing shows wider skis (95-110mm underfoot) and generally softer skis. We don’t typically care about the groomer preformance the same way you do for your needs.

    • @RicketySkiReviews
      @RicketySkiReviews  5 днів тому

      Sure I agree both types of skis are valid, but for the majority of skiers who just search "best all mountain skis" It tends to be narrower. And more importantly, carving is an important part of all mountain skis. They even cover that aspect of the ski in their reviews. But having skis that wide can work against that carving responsiveness. Which is a big deal for alot of all mountain skiers.

    • @Nevrollie
      @Nevrollie 4 дні тому

      @@RicketySkiReviews i don’t think they made the reviews with the majority in mind. They were aiming towards the more playful and freestyle oriented riders, which have become more common than groomer skiers. Also, all mountain does mean that it can ride the whole mountain right? So why not have it rip powder and hit the park on the way to the lift? Carving might not be the strongest side of all these, but for the freestyle skier it is not as important to be thrown into the next turn, we need a more stable edge to edge that is easy to butter and slash.

  • @StartCodonUST

    My prior assumption was that a Newschoolers ski test/review was going to have the perspective that under 90mm underfoot doesn't exist (unless it's basically center-mounted), and they expect their target audience to mostly share that opinion. Not even having a ski under 100mm still surprised me, but glad to see solid reviews. I wonder if the reason they're giving these super wide skis a total pass on their carving performance (or lack thereof) is the fact that if there's not fresh powder, the next best thing on the hill for them is park skiing anyway, rather than carving like those of us who have gotten bitten by the carving bug. The opportunity cost of prioritizing powder performance just isn't that high if you haven't experienced the exhilaration of good carving technique. That said, I'm told that launching yourself off jumps provides a decent amount of exhilaration too, so...

    • @drumnbasssakuga9352
      @drumnbasssakuga9352 Місяць тому +1

      The reason that carving isn't our highest priority is because it's only one facet of the many different ways to have fun on a ski (moguls, trees, powder, aerial + grind tricks, etc.). It's not the freaking end-all, be-all. For me personally, the piste is just a medium to get from one mogul field/glade to another. Zipperlining moguls is just more fun to me than carving.

      @StartCodonUST Місяць тому

      @@Tanner731 Lol, of course they can carve "fine", but they're just boring to carve. Like, most of them are so boring that I get why people prioritize the ability of a ski to do anything besides carving. If the conditions are really firm, there's no reason I'd pick my Nordica Enforcer 104s over my Thunderbirds. I'd rather go cross-country skiing than carve on a wide ski.

    • @StartCodonUST
      @StartCodonUST Місяць тому

      @@drumnbasssakuga9352 Totally, I can 100% understand that perspective, and I've gone back and forth in terms of how much I prioritized carving performance. When I was living in Montana, I definitely treated the groomed runs more like they were just a means of transportation to the interesting terrain, and I think this perspective makes even more sense for anyone who's saving their days off work for when there's fresh snow and not skiing in firm conditions that much. Like I said, I think Newschoolers seem to be appropriately reviewing skis to their target audience in this regard, where carving performance just seems to be the least-prioritized attribute.

I've tried the Unleashed 98s and the Elan Playmaker 101s. I didn't like the Playmakers as they weren't great in the crud at the end of the season. The unleashed 98s were fine. I've got my eyes set on the Clack Crows Atris. What do you think?

    • @Rakingclaw4
      @Rakingclaw4 Місяць тому

      Atris is a lot of fun. The big contextual knock which you should have no issues with, is out in the NE it needs a lot of runway to really open up and come alive. BC surprised me with their build quality and there’s really no gimmicks. What I love about their skis too is after riding the Atris, I knew its baby brother the Camox, was a ski that would do all I needed to as a dad ski and I was relatively shocked by the great edge hold. I’m 5’7” 140lb on the 174.2cm Camox. In Utah you’d be better with the Atris for better floatation and crud busting. And you won’t have the knee strain that can come with a lot of turns on hard pack/ice.
      Definitely some good deals on last year’s skis too. Best of luck!

I love the Atris, but they're pretty aggressive off trail and fun at higher speeds, so you may consider that since your skiing with kids. Are these older kids that shred, or kids you're typically waiting for? a ton of different factors, but you're on the right path with that ski.
