What the heck happened to that first car? Props to the goblin for keeping it on the road, but that's serious mechanical problems, before the PIT.
I figured two reasons for it: 1) He absolutely didn't know how to handle a rear wheel driven car with that much power; or 2) he was playing with the officer because his ego was way to big. I'm leaning more towards number one.
In the narration he mentioned that the peep had struck either his or another police car earlier. That must have damaged the steering.
If you look close, you can see that the right rear tire is toed out... a LOT. He broke the toe control rod when he hit the cop car.
Go get them Sarg. All those no licenses, insurance, registration, no valid tag etc. Way too many unlawful drivers on our highway. Just be very, very careful when doing pits as there might be children in the car. They are innocent victims.

I swear that utilizing stop strips should be mandatory on these stops.........especially this second one with the Altima. Also.......why don't more police forces incorporate Grapplers?? They're not cheap but a ton cheaper than always destroying pursuit vehicles plus a ton safer!
That's a good question. Average repair costs on a cop car are hard to find. On a company vehicle, not law enforcement, that I was driving, it cost about 1700 to completely redo the brakes. It cost about 3500 to fix/replace the transmission. It's hard to get an average auto body repair cost. Most range from simple dent removal (50-100) to body panel replacement (up to several thousand), windshield/glass etc. Average cost to install a grappler looks to be about $5000 +/- training + 500 to replace net after each use.
I know we see a lot of PITs in videos, but I doubt most precincts would actually use a grappler very often. So only one or two cars would get them and they would have to be the one in pursuit in order to be useful. (like the issue of having to be trained in order to use a PIT maneuver, they have to be there to be useful)
Spike strips are another thing however. They are cheaper and easier to train on. They do have to be refurbished after each use (50-150), but still cheaper. It doesn't stop the perp from taking off but does slow them down making it safer to PIT. Again, most stops don't warrant use of them. Most ppl don't take off.
I'm going to guess that upfront money, general replacement/maintenance cost and training is the usual factor in the decision making. I'm sure it gets talked about at some precincts.
Great insight and weigh-in. I'd add that these Grapplers (I have zero stake in the company) are a ton safer than 100 mph+ PITs plus many states do not allow these or pursuits in many cases. I just hate to see our brave traffic patrol personnel handicapped and I also despise that so many judge/prosecutors refuse to even indict (MN anyone??). When they takes as long as #2 to stop they are probably going to run, they are just getting you out of your car for a head start.

Depends on the state (each state has different laws and penalties) and specific circumstances (was anyone hurt, property damage, drugs/alcohol involved, etc) plus the prosecutor and judge.

@1:47/1:48 , you mentioned the date & time. In the video it shows daylight maybe 9:25AM , not PM. Being 12/14/23 at 9:25PM, it would be dark outside/night time.

The taking care of keys can be construed as an arrest in some States, which makes it illegal.

They would need probable cause to take anything other than legal documents (ID/LIC, reg, ins). Probable cause or a warrant is needed for a search or seizure. A simple traffic stop doesn't allow that. If the guy was suspected dui, or a known felon and wanted, etc. Then the keys could be taken for security and safety. However, the cop could ask for the driver to remove the keys and place them somewhere (on the seat or dash etc).
@@NigelSylas No. Just as being put in handcuffs doesn't mean you are being arrested. You can't take anything from the car without probable cause or warrant.
