    way was the engine crews stoking their engine with coal dust? was the steam coal in China very poor quality?

      Actually, dust is not necessarily low quality coal although it needs skill to ensure it doesn't go straight through the tubes, which by and large it didn't here. All these narrow gauge railways were run on the proverbial shoestring and I guess in this case these locos used the same coal as the brick works where slow burning dust was needed as seen in Part 2.
