Sandaoling is located in Xinjiang region, northwest China. It is one of the last places on Earth, where 1435 mm classic gauge steam locomotives are still in standard operation. The mine should work until 2020.
Video of JS class locomotives was taken from 14th to 20th January 2018./

Sandaoling leží v provincii Xinjiang v severozápadní Číně. Je to jedno z posledních míst na světě, kde jsou v pravidelném provozu nasazeny parní lokomotivy klasického rozchodu 1435 mm. Důl by měl fungovat do roku 2020. Záběry lokomotiv řady JS byly natočeny ve dnech 14.-20.1.2018.

I know that one of those locomotives, JS-8419, has been preserved by the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad in America. Additionally, three QJ class 2-10-2 locomotives and two SY class 2-8-2s have also been preserved. Engines SY-1647 (now Susquehanna 142, SY-1658m (now New Haven 3025), QJ-6988 (now Iowa Interstate 6988), QJ-7081 (now Iowa Interstate 7081), QJ-2008 (now R. J. Corman 2008), and JS-8419 (now Boone & Scenic Valley 8419) have been preserved in America. Additionally, several more have also been preserved in China.
I have been on steam trains in China... even in the 1980's they were terrific and quite fast

You can really hear the pounding exhaust. Just like the 50's in the USA. Getting up that mountain I am surprised they don't have water stops.

It’s only a 3-mile run. Those engines can run about 15 miles without stopping for coal and about 12 miles without stopping for water.

навсерное каждому человеку навсегда запоминается родина - там где он родился и провёл детство. я родился в пос Рудник Джезказганской обл (казахстан) жили в английских бараках . ещё построеные до революции , когда англичане добывали медь , но с приходом советской власти их выгнали. За задним двором рядом стояла шахта . только рудоподъём , помню по верху бегали вогонетки и с верху выгружали медную руду, а экскаватор грузил на думпкары, для меня было всё огромное я наблюдал с интересом, в 1963 году в возрасте 4-х лет нас высиляли , , а домики разрушили , но место навсегда запомнилось в моей памяти . и когда еду в каз-н всегда смотрю на руины шахты той и место где ничего не осталось от нашего барака Всего доброго Вам Удачи!

The coal dust itself is very slippery, it's everywhere, on the tracks, in the air, so it is a near Clutch Clutch Clutch fight to gain traction, it would be ideal if the locomotive had enough sand to lay down for traction but that's not realistic. Still, wonderful trains.

Check out the steam trains of Durango, Colorado. They have fully restored steam locomotives, a full machine shop to restore other steam locomotives and make parts and trains that run from Durango to Silverton and back. It is a great experience!

A lot of these locos are working right at the limit of their traction. The whole landscape looks post apocalyptic.

If you ever wondered how steam locomotive started forest fires, here it is! The terrain's too barren in these scenes to start any fires. Near where I live there's still evidence of the fires set decades ago from steam locomotives.

Luckily oil burning steam locomotives came around. No more forest fire concerns after that.
@@willausterman3104 Some railroads bought oil burners new. UP and Santa Fe had them. In the anthracite region of NE PA there was so much coal it made no sense to burn anything else. We still run them like that today.

Ironically, I've never seen a Shandaoling JS clean before. They always seem to be dirty and covered with coal dust.
Some steam trains are the first also. Those with hotmetal heaters, The inside energy in an alloy of metals is brought out to make heat.
Google on my name. If you drive a diesel you live 60y old steam 70y electric overhead. 85y Clean steam 110y because it is a meditating locomotive. This is the return of steam.

I wonder how long it would take to travel from the loading area to the dump point and back? I understand that it’s a nearly 3 mile line, but I just want to know.
June 2020, any steam left in China? Maybe some left as shunters at coal mines. I went to Bosnia in 2018 and German 2-10-0s are still to be found working in the Tuzla region with 0-6-0s also, but all confined to mine work. I think Bosnia will be the last stand for working steam.

@ I'm afraid it's finally gone, but thanks for the reply. I was told sometime in 2020 no more steam.
A grand total of 28 JS class 2-8-2 locomotives preserved in various places.

Hi, I'd like to go there and check it out - do you have contact details of any hotels to stay at there? Can't find anything..
You should look it up on Google Maps, NW China is basically a high steppe plain, not very touristy. I doubt there's many hotels near these mines.
It takes skill to work the engine, while avoiding wheel slippage.

Nejde o repliky, ale o pozdější dodávky lokomotiv s označením JS (JS6053, JS8081) z osmdesátých let. Viz. odkaz Wikipedie v popisu videa.
