The problem I have with people like the girl speaking first is that they are very selective. When they say “black” they mean Americans who are black and speak English. The vast majority of black people that were brought into the new world are not in the US, they are in south america, in Brazil. The majority of black people in the americas aren’t in the US, they are in Brazil and they speak Portuguese. Ive seen even a rejection of actual Africans from Africa because they are not Americans and a lot of them don’t speak English.
I applaud Laz for this. I've seen him in other shows & forums. I think he is one of the first celebrities and person if not the first to open the dialogue for this discussion. He's been educating people and had some teachable moments.
The problem is that Americans associate race with culture. I’m Dominican, I have African ancestry but that doesn’t mean my culture aligns with a black American’s culture. The same way my culture does not align with a Nigerian’s culture even though we have the same skin tone. I think that what Melyssa and other black Americans mean when they say “you’re not black” they are not talking about skin tone, they are talking about culture in which they refer to it as “black”

People need to understand that black race is a socially constructed term and it cannot be biologically determined. There is nothing in us that genetically determines one’s race. I don’t think it’s the fact that Afro Latinas do not want to identify with being black but it’s more about the fact they identify with ethnicity and nationality more so than race. I’m Belizean and we don’t identify ourselves as race either. We identify ourselves based on our ethnic group and that has to do more with our ethnicity and nationality. Our nationality is Belizean but each of us have an ethnicity group that we identify with. There is a part of the Belizean culture and practices that is influenced by both African ancestors and mestizos and Mayans. People try to make things more complex than it already when it’s not necessary. America is the only place where they try to Identify everyone as black or white. If you go to Africa you don’t here African says I’m black. They will say I’m Kenyan, I’m Ethiopian, I’m west African and so on and so on.

Let me help you out. You are half Cuban and half American. That is you're National origin. Now as far as your race, if you're Cuban parent is black, then you are 100% black. But they're white, you are half black and half white. If they are mixed, then you're pretty much mixed.

Look at someone who is most likely 100% Native American from, let say, Arizona or New Mexico and then compare someone from Mexico, Guatemala, Peru or Ecuador or Bolivia..Are there major biological differences? What Laz is say is partly contradictory. Many Afro Cubans do not see themselves as Black. I am sure he knows this. The part of those who have a colonized mindset, I agree with this view. Then, we have many people of African origins who don't, unfortunately, recognize that there are cultural differences. It doesn't negate the fact that they are of African origins but there experiences have been very different. They have their common denominators, history that they do share but also histories they do not.

Also it's not so shocking, I think in America people just get confused by the difference between "race" and "cultural heritage" Latino is not a race, nor are the countries within it. It's a cultural heritage, so the people from Latin America can be any race (White, Black, Asian, etc.) just like in the USA. So if someone says "I'm Mexican" or "I'm Dominican" for example, that's not a reference to their race, that is stating their cultural heritage, they could be black still, but they identify by their culture
