Honestly, when i learned as an adult that in the original version, the shadow realm, this dark, heavy concept that was literally a "fate worse than death" was really just...they died. Boring old death. Honestly, that was such a letdown. All those menacing threats from Yami Marik and Bakura of eternal torture in the shadow realm...boiling down to "Imma gonna kill ya". Waaay better in the dub, honestly. Fits the world like a glove (And also, on the same note, I know some people make fun of finger guns a lot...but I seriously didn't notice that one til I was I was an adult either. Because this is a world where people minimum once per episode point at each other dramatically. It just fits)
I had no idea about what happened to toby in the dub. I knew about the sub having him die and have his body left where one of Akiza's attacks was so she would take the blame for what happened to him, but this is the 1st time I heard the dub explanation
The Shadow Realm is a little more complicated than just being made up by 4Kids. It started out as just the localized name for the "Dark World" in the Japanese version, but then in Battle City they took the Shadow Realm to another level in the dub by using it everywhere
In season 0 anime, Yugi opens a 'door to darkness' when he wins a Penalty game to inflict punishment. I think the Dark World originates from this evil place when punishments escape it and enter a person.
In Tagforce 4 they sayed it straight out that toby died. Misty is also my favourite girl in 5Ds because of her backstory and the player reminds her always on her late brother. which is cute but sad in the same way Her Dark Signer Arc was instead of learning to let go was taking revenge out of blind rage destroying the singners and sayer just to feel the empyness at the end. Also she becomes a total yandere and still sees her little brother in the Player and wants to protect him.
do correct me if im wrong since tag force game releases confuse me sometimes, but wernt the games past 2 japan only? it would explain why any translations would state the character is dead.

It is a weird misconception that was mostly sparked by the rewrite from 4kids themselves. Anything bordering unbelievability goes by the idea of "the death of the caster reverses the magic"(A VERY common magic-trope). Yami Marik dies, so Bakura returns and Mai wakes up. Same idea as the shadow realm-thing actually, just that you do not need a specific realm for it.
The funny thing is, Yugioh is mainly for a teen audience in Japan. Given that it’s a Shonen, which is mainly used as a demographic term for manga and anime that primarily targets early to late teen boys (12-18). Which Sevens and Go Rush being the only exceptions as those are the only Yugioh adaptations intended for a child audience.
Speaking of the dark energy disks, I couldn't have been the only kid who thought of them as buzz saws made out of energy and the loser would lose their legs then get sent to the Shadow Realm, right? I mean there was no way kids wouldn't have noticed that they were buzz saws. Also not saying I was a fan with the change, but imo Misty's brother being sent to a secret location that is constantly moving sounds a lot more fitting and cult-like considering that Arcadia was a cult.
When you discussed "Aster not knowing his father's fate until the final confrontation" and "Misty's brother Toby being trafficked place to place" being much more painful than already knowing they're dead, it also reminded me of Alister from the Orichalchos arc. In the original, he saw his brother die in a war explosion, but in the Dub he's kidnapped by the enemy forces. I headcanon that he's already dead because i don't know what use is a child-prisoner-of-war? So Alister still searching for his brother several years later is ultimately pointless. I also headcanon similarly with Toby. Based of his fate in the original version, he died from his further experimentations in that "secret location", so Sayer actually is telling the truth that he doesn't know what happened to him after sending him away.
My belief is that the use of the Shadow Realm was good in SOME instances. For example, in the case of the first Pegasus duel and most of Marik's penalty games, it served to essentially add a bit of expansion to the concept of a "Dark Game." HOWEVER. Where it becomes silly and insulting to the intelligence of its viewers is when you get things like the "Dark energy disk"
Honestly, if the so called Shadow realm was a mere adaption tactic a la where the penalty games take place and were solely connected to the millenium items, it would be fine. But no, death is taboo. And so we got stuff like "the glass will break and open a portal to the shadow realm"...and they left in the one scene where one of the glasses break and the guy who falls has a parachute on🤣

Funnily enough Yu-Gi-Oh GX actually has something akin to the 4Kids' depiction of the Shadow Realm as an actual plot point, the World of Darkness.

I think u have it mixed up, 5ds and zexal didn’t get their full dubs while gx and classic did. 5ds stopped dub at the final arc and same with Zel
