I’m in an apologetics class at church and this was the topic last Sunday. I learned that actually Paul was quoting the local people when he said “Women should stay quiet in the churches-they shouldn't speak. They should respect their situation, as the laws states. If they want to learn they can do so at home, asking their husbands. It is not proper for women to speak in church.”“ 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 He was quoting what the people were saying and then he says ”What? Did the word of God begin with you? Are you the only ones it came to?“ 1 Corinthians 36 This was a cultural norm during the time and he was criticizing it. It is not a biblical command. It was just a social cultural norm that women weren’t allowed to speak in church. However, while women can “speak in church” they are not supposed to lead as a lead pastor of a church. I do think women have a place in the church and enjoy listening as a woman to other women including you. But men should be led by other men.
It explicitly states numerous times in the Scriptures that women are not supposed to preach. I don’t know how you find your way around this. Not honestly at least.
Learn how to read properly and in full context. Try to comprehend and understand what the word actually says, not what your warped mind picks and chooses to remember.
The Greek word for women in that verse was always translated wife in other areas, including 1 Cor chap 7. It is important to look at the context of the verse who it was for and why. I suggest Barry Bennetts teachings on Women Teachers for a more complete teaching.
There was a reason for that rebuke to women at that time.. They were like cackling hens that disrupted the messages being preached.. This verse has NOTHING to do with women in ministry.. Have you read about other women in the Bible? The Samaritan woman, Mary and Martha, Mary Magdalene, Esther, Deborah, etc?? According to the Scriptures “in the Holy Spirit there is no Jew or Gentile, no male or female.”
Yeah I mean… It’s definitely in the scriptures. not claiming to know why, but it’s also not my job to have total understanding. Yours neither. Reading the Bible & invalidating the parts we find inconvenient or unworthy of our own “morality” is in large how we ended up with countless denominations in the church. Woman aren’t supposed to be in positions of authority or influence. The culture contradicts that, but the whole theme of the Bible is to disregard culture. If anything, you’re supporting the culture ur complaining about by removing gender roles. Woman are indeed hyper sexualized but why in the world would ignoring scripture be a solution to that?
A good comment by Bobby-qe9sb, especially the 2nd paragraph. In Orthodox (Authentic) Judaism, women are not permitted to become Rabbis. There are other restrictions also. Basically, it is stated that women are too emotional, and emotions can overwhelm or compromise common sense and logical decisions. A note for you, Bobby, relating to that 2nd paragraph, is that Christians have done exactly what you have warned against described there. Re-read the first book of the Bible for confirmation of this fact. Shalom.
