- Steam powered model ship Winkelried.
Here you can see my second "Winkelried" paddle steamer model, from an earlier period, painted with the "classic" black, white and green colours.
This is the way she looked in 1896. Original black painted hull, and pilot house right on the promenade deck. Lifeboats where slightly shorter than the 1909 replacement ones.
As was already the case with my previous "white hull" Winkelried, I entirely built this live steam metal model from scratch.
The slide valve oscillating steam engine connects directly to the feathering paddle wheels, exactly the same way the real one did . No flywheel or reduction gear !
Of course, for this scratch built model, I took advantage of all the research and plans I drew for my first Winkelried model, which I built the way she looked during her final 1909-1918 "white hull" years.
This steamboat was, at the time, the most famous paddle-wheeler in Switzerland.

Bateau vapeur vive représentant le fameux Winkelried II d'Escher Wyss & Cie du Lac Léman dans sa version de 1896.
Le modèle est construit de "toute pièce" en métal et la machine oscillante à tiroirs plans actionne, tout comme le véritable vapeur, directement les roues à aubes, sans incorrect volant "flywheel" ni réducteur.

It's scratch built.
I designed and crafted this engine based on both 1893 "Rigi" and 1854 "Tudor Vladimirescu" engines
( the oldest operating paddle steamer in the world !).
Their oscillating engines were all built by Escher Wyss & Cie in Zurich.

No, there's not much choice when it comes to raddampfer kits.
But building from scratch is so much more rewarding than assembling a "bausatz"!
