Hudson River Walking Beam Steamboat "NORTH AMERICA". #2 Steam engine / Brass Cylinder & Piston Rings
Gauge one - 1/32 scale - Scratch built live steam side wheel model ship.
Part #2 :
Machining the Steam Engine Cylinder, and the way I make piston rings for brass cylinders.
Assembling the Cylinder, valve chests and wipers and testing it with compressed air.
The engine will be functional and remote controlled, it will have to be adapted accordingly, as was already the case with my first walking beam model, powering the steamboat "Thomas Powell".
"North America", Unlike "Thomas Powell" had an early type of engine with a single set of wipers. Other major differences was the "split bucket" paddle wheels, and, most noticeable, the double ended hull, often seen on the Hudson River at that time.
After finishing the engine, I will carry on with the paddle wheels, and only then will I start making the hull....quite some work ahead!
The Walking Beam name came from Indians living along the rivers; they coined a name for the paddle wheelers which In English meant "mill that walks on the water"!
They were not the Mississippi style steamships, but were the usual steamer design on the Hudson river, a design for VERY fast paddle wheelers!..
The Hudson river side-wheeler "North America" was built by Devine & Burtis at Brooklyn in 1839 ! Length of the wooden hull: 230 feet.
The walking beam engine was built by James Cunningham at New York, having a 48 inch cylinder with 11 ft stroke!
The weight of this giant walking beam engine required the shallow wooden hull to be stiffened by immense hog frames and stays, which also took care of the weight from the boilers on the guards.
She was a considerably finer boat than all those previously built!
She also was the first steamer with independent steam engines and boilers to operate the blowers for the furnaces.
She burned anthracite coal.
Please note : This will be a "one-off" , parts or plans for this paddle wheeler and it's engine are not for sale!
Thanks for watching!

    It's interesting that reverse was achieved by manual valve actuation, I wonder why they didn't use a reversing gear system, even if something like the Stephenson's sliding link wasn't viable due to the vertical position of the valve, a single eccentric reversing gear like a simple slip eccentric or Wolfe valve gear doesn't seem like it'd be a problem to do. I guess they didn't use reverse enough to warrant putting some extra engineering into it? I dunno, I certainly would've thought it'd be useful on a river boat.

    • @LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG
      @LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG Рік тому

      I'm sure they did, at some point, try out different reversing gear systems during the 100+ years these engines where running! The starting bar operation was simple and efficient: once throttled off, and hooks lifted up, the engineer could swiftly and precisely swing the bar up or down, opening or closing the valves. This reactivity reduced the dangerous risk of locking up on dead center with the boat moving towards the pier. I don't think it was that much work: just one or two counter revolutions of the paddle wheels were necessary at the landings. Steamboats designed to "sail" astern had two sets of eccentrics and hooks (e.g. Ferry Eureka - San Francisco). Thank you for your interest, and thanks for watching!

      @@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG Fair that to arrest the vessel as it slowly approaches the docks would likely only take a couple of cycles with the lever, but I imagine it'd be quite a bit more harrowing to need to perform an emergency stop from speed. Good point on the ability to avoid, or at least reduce the chance of, landing on a dead center with a single cylinder engine, though.

      Weight is the main problem when building a functional side wheeler model made of metal! Since many centuries, almost anything could be done with metal! A 16th century pocket watch is a good example! "Unterwalden" was the first metal boat I started building in 1989!

    There are 2 axes right? One for the drive shaft and one for the arms that make the articulating movement. So in a real boat, you will need reach up all the way around the paddle wheel to mount that arm axis on the boat?

    • @LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG
      @LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG Рік тому

      Yes, you're right. They have to be offset! Eccentric arms could also be located between the hull and wheel: an offset slew ring would then be used, the big wheel shaft going right through it. My "Setting a Glasgow feathering wheel" video shows a metal model wheel just like that, with the conventional Glasgow wheel next to it!

      That's gonna be difficult! As you know, to reverse these giant engines, the engineer had to lift off the eccentric rod hooks from the rock shafts, and then manually open/close the valves accordingly for every single revolution! For this kind of engine to reverse reliably at such a small size in a RC model boat, I adapted different things (reviewed in video description), and a simple steam-reversing valve was one of them! No "hidden linkage"! Thank you for watching, and for your interesting steam videos!
