A cute little Steam powered paddle wheel boat, Kaiser Franz Josef inspired !
A collector brought me this very nicely made, but uncompleted little paddle steamer.
It does look a bit like a steam boat toy in need of a good restoration!
Who built it ...???
Which paddle steamer was she supposed to be a model of ...???
Unfortunately we were not able to find that out !...
Everything is scratch built: hull, functional wobbler steam engine, boiler and gas burner, small brass feathering wheels... What more can you ask for ?...
..."Just" for it to be completed, of course!
So that's what I'm gonna do!...
We decided to keep everything very simple, no Radio control, just like an antique steam toy!
I will have to be careful not to add too much weight: we don't want water pouring in trough the many open portholes!
My inspiration for completing this imaginary little steamer will mainly come from Steamboat "Kaiser Franz Josef" sailing the Austrian Wolfgangsee.
Kaiser Franz Josef was Sissi's husband...and she was the daughter of Ludovika !
That why this steamboat will carry the Bavarian flag!
Overall length: 84cm - 33"
Oscillating Cylinder Steam Engine : 1/2" bore x 5/8" stroke - 13x16mm

Final "Part Two" was supposed to be about finishing the work on the boat, and giving it back to it's owner...
But things don't always go as planned!...
Bringing her to the pond for a little live test, quickly revealed that the added weight of the new superstructure, with it's necessary compensation ballast, generated a greater load on the paddles...the stalled engine would need more pressure!...
...And the only result achieved trying to get the burner to produce more steam, was to burn off some of the paint!
To limit further damage, I ended the test there.
At this stage, the owner will be the one to decide what to do next...
...another type of boiler and burner, maybe in a future episode?

Très joli bateau tout en métal, malheureusement incomplet, qu'un collectionneur m'a confié.
Equipé de roues à aubes excentriques et machine à vapeur vive, il ne "demande qu'à" être terminé... Coque, machine, bruleur, chaudière et roues fabriqués "maison" par ???
Episode 1.
N'ayant pas pu determiner de quel bateau le constructeur de ce modèle s'était inspiré, nous avons opté pour une finition simple, façon jouet ancien, sans RC, et nécessairement le moins lourd possible pour que l'eau n'entre pas par les nombreux hublots!...
Episode 2.
Ou il s'agissait simplement de completer ce petit vapeur, et le rendre à son collectionneur....mais les choses ne se passent pas toujours comme prévu !...
Il s'est vite avéré, lors du test "in situ", que le poids de la nouvelle superstructure et de son lest de compensation nécessaire, ont généré une plus grande charge sur les aubes...donc le besoin d'une pression plus élevée pour faire fonctionner la machine...
...et en augmentant le débit du brûleur pour produire plus de vapeur, le seul résultat obtenu à été de brûler une partie de la peinture!
A ce stade, je laisse donc le soin au propriétaire de décider de la suite...
Il semble évident que le plus sûr et efficace serait de remplacer la chaudière par une d'un autre type, avec un brûleur "interne"...peut-être dans un nouvel épisode?

Raddampfer Modell Dampschiff
Sehr schönes Boot, ausgestattet mit exzentrischen Schaufelrädern und einer echtdampfmaschine, aber leider unvollständig, was nur darauf „verlangt“, fertig zu werden... Rumpf, Maschine, Brenner, Kessel und Räder „hand gebaut“ hergestellt von ???
Episode 1.
Da wir nicht feststellen konnten, von welchem Boot sich der Erbauer dieses Modells inspirieren ließ, entschieden wir uns für eine einfache Ausführung, wie ein altes Spielzeug, ohne RC, unbedingt so leicht wie möglich, damit durch die vielen Bullaugen kein Wasser eindringt!...
Episode 2.
Ging es lediglich darum, diesen kleinen Dampfer fertigzustellen und ihn seinem Sammler zurückzugeben … aber es läuft nicht immer alles wie geplant! …
Beim „In-Situ“-Test stellte sich schnell heraus, dass das Gewicht des neuen Aufbaus und der erforderliche Ausgleichsballast eine größere Belastung auf der Schaufelräder ausübt... daher ein höherer Druck zum Betrieb der Maschine erforderlich war …
Durch die Erhöhung der Leistung des Brenners, um mehr Dampf zu erzeugen, das einzige Ergebnis war, dass ein Teil der Farbe verbrannte!
An dieser Stelle überlasse ich es daher dem Eigentümer, zu entscheiden, was als nächstes zu tun ist ...
Es scheint offensichtlich, dass es am sichersten und effizientesten wäre, den Kessel durch einen anderen Typ mit einem „internen“ Brenner zu ersetzen... vielleicht in einer neuen Folge?

It's amazing the amount of details you make so intricately with a material such as metal that one might think is harder to work with than wood. How long have you been working with metal?
Weight is the main problem when building a functional side wheeler model made of metal!
Since many centuries, almost anything could be done with metal! A 16th century pocket watch is a good example!
"Unterwalden" was the first metal boat I started building in 1989!
