What Happens To Old Airplanes?

  • Did you know the disposal of old planes is a thriving multibillion dollar business? Or that it’s recently spawned a dangerous shadow market in counterfeit aircraft parts?
    Hop on board and buckle up for takeoff as we ask exactly what happens to old airplanes?
    You might wonder why airplanes need to die in the first place. After all, they’re made of metal, right - can’t they just be maintained, theoretically forever?

      Very unfortunate that the lives lost in this Malaysian
      plane were not treated in par with the lives lost in Titanic Ship! Well, nothing can be done as not even a single minute trace of this aircraft was found even after a 3-year search! Otherwise, they would hv made a much bigger charbuster movie on this too!

    Why can`t the metal can be used for making cars and instead of dismantling old planes they may be taken to islands and used as small malls, supermarkets and restaurants. truly it would be sound proof and AC ready. thanks.

    Which begs the question. Are the 787 and soon to be produced 797 a disruptor in this market? They are essentially immortal planes as they have no metal to fatigue. All u need to do is re-engine them and refit them with new interiors and voila a “brand new airplane “.

    • @79Gravity
      @79Gravity 3 роки тому +1

      thats just wrong :) you need the "intire"insides of a plane also, just not the metal.. plane is way more than just metal.. just imagine how well wires run on bare metal.. so :) making a new one is cheaper.. right? immortal is a bad word to even use.. its one of those famous last ones, im "immortal" in my "brand new airplane".. sure you are :D some questions dont need to even be asked.. even if you beg

    Boeing and Airbus fuselages are designed to flex during pressurization, which causes the lifespan issue. McDonnel Douglas DC-9 and DC-10 series were designed to NOT flex during pressurization, so pressurization cycles do not apply. I worked on a DC-10 that had over 190,000 hours when it was retired.

    • @tedstarr7942
      @tedstarr7942 2 місяці тому

      Got news for you. All fuselages will flex to some extent depending on the actual design. It is all a matter of degree and where the design stress is located on the S-N curve (stress level versus number of cycles the metal is exposed to). Back to Engineering 101. There sre no absolutes.

      All aluminum aircraft have a known maximum number of takeoff and landing cycles, based on the engineers’ calculations of metal fatigue. I think that for a 747 it’s something like 50,000.
      The highest time airplane of all time is a DC3 with something like 90,000+ flying hours. It’s around 85 years old.
      So an aircraft can’t be used beyond the original design limits.
      Military aircraft actually get very little use. Some types can be retired with as little as 5000-10,000 hours, and it may take them decades to accumulate that much time.
