    PaintBasket hello, you mentioned this can also be used for acrylic and oil, does the same technique apply? Can you also add polyeutherine after? And can I also use Dorlands wax medium for acrylic and oil? Is this the same as cold wax medium?

    • @dennistheartist
      @dennistheartist 4 роки тому +1

      Good question. Yes, you certainly may use the Dorlands wax medium on the watercolours as well as on oil paintings. If you use it on an oil paint painting make absolutely sure that it is completely dry (anything from 6 months to a year depending on the thicknesses the paint) before waxing or protecting with the wax or varnish. On the oil painting use either the wax or the varnish. It is really not necessary to apply both.

    I very much enjoyed your excellent video and the technique shown. I have wanted to try doing a watercolor on canvas. Still in the "mulling it over" stage. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge!

      @dennisclarkartschool1290 5 років тому +1

      Susan, I have not painted watercolors on gessoed (which is acrylic) panels, but know of others who have. Watercolor will not take on an oily surface. It would be best to first clean the surface to get rid of any fingerprints (invisible) that may be on it through normal handling. After this, you can proceed with the watercolor painting and varnishing.

      Esme, if you are going to frame your art work behind glass then you do not need to wax/varnish it. If your watercolour painting is on canvas, and will not be behind glass, then you definitely will have to wax/varnish it for protection. Any wax/varnish such as Art Spectrum Wax/Varnish or Langridge Wax Varnish will do. Hope this helps you.

    • @PaintBasket
      @PaintBasket  2 роки тому +1

      I would test one to see if it works by doing this : apply the gel to the paper (don't be shy with the gel) then when you place it onto the wood, add a lot of weight onto the paper - use plenty of heavy books to force the artwork onto the wood and leave until you are 100% sure the gel has dried before removing the books. If the books / weight kept the paper flush then it shouldn't come loose and your wrinkles will be gone :)

    • @dennisclarkartschool1290
      @dennisclarkartschool1290 4 роки тому +1

      Anne, once you have attached the watercolour paper properly with gel, and it has dried completely, the paper will not buckle when you paint. One word of caution: When you attach the paper to the board make absolutely sure that you do NOT get any gel on the painting surface of the paper. The watercolour paint will not grip on the gel spots. So glad you enjoyed the video :-)

    • @dennistheartist

      Daniela, you have to FIRST apply wax to seal and waterproof the watercolour painting. Do NOT use polyurethane to seal the painting as you stand the chance of smudging and ruining the painting. It is also nt necessary to apply polyurethane. I added the Polyurethane varnish over the wax just to make doubly sure the painting won't be damaged by misuse. For normal use only two coats of wax are necessary.

    Hi! This was a wonderful video. Dennis, some of my watercolor paintings tend to warp or curl in places. How do you prevent that and keep such flat paintings? If mine did warp, would this process flatten them out, do you think?

    • @dennisclarkartschool1290
      @dennisclarkartschool1290 3 роки тому +1

      Julia, The waxing process will unfortunately not flatten out a curled painting. However, if it is only very slightly warped, it may be flattened if you paste it to a solid substrate.
      If properly stretched it should not buckle when absolutely dry. You could lay the painting face down on a dry towel. Thoroughly wet the back of the painting. Leave for a while and then wipe off the excess water. Place a flat board on top and place some heavy weights on it. Leave until thoroughly dry. Suggest you practice first on an old painting.

    Hi, Thank you for this video,
    I used this method to seal a watercolor painting. First attached the paper to the MDF board with acrylic gel medium. Then applied two coats of Gamblin cold wax medium letting each layer dry at least 24 hours. After that I applied Amsterdam acrylic varnish /satin finish. The painting is quite large but I tried to make the wax coats carefully to cover the surface well. After I had applied the varnish it seeped under the wax and made the paper look "wet" in some places. It did dry ok later but even after two more varnish coats the shine on the paper is uneven. Some parts look matte. Is that because the varnish was not water soluble?

    • @dennistheartist
      @dennistheartist 2 роки тому

      By not seeing the painting itself it is difficult for me to give a good evaluation. The two coats of cold wax should have adequately sealed the painting. If the varnish has seeped under the wax it tells me that the varnish will not normally penetrate two layers of wax. It looks like those areas were not adequately covered by the wax. The varnish will not normally penetrate two layers of wax. The varnish should have been polyurethane and NOT acrylic because acrylic does not adhere properly to a wax (oil) base. It will eventually peel away. Hope this helps.

    Thank you! Do you have to mount your painting on wood? Would mat board work?

    • @dennisclarkartschool1290

      Jamie. Yes, you can - be aware of possible warping. The whole idea of this tutorial is not to use glass and a backing board to preserve the paper from ageing and getting brittle.

      Not sure of your question, but no, no impasto has been used in this demo, only the wax varnish.

    Hi. can i wax a watercolour painting that has been done on a canvas pad. Can i then put it behind a glass frame. Thanks

    • @PaintBasket
      @PaintBasket  5 років тому +1

      I would do a test on a spare canvas panel first. If you are framing behind glass there is no need to seal the painting using this method, but if you had a sealed painting, you could certainly frame it behind glass without any problems.

      @@PaintBasket Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will be framing the picture but i'm going to wax it after having first tested a spare canvas, then if it's ever taken out of the glass it will still have the protection. :)

    I got a question. Is it possible to mount the blank watercolour paper on a wood panel, so it wouldn't be a risk to damage the painting in any way, instead of doing it with the finished painting?

    • @dennisclarkartschool1290
      @dennisclarkartschool1290 6 років тому +3

      Betty, you certainly can mount the blank paper onto the board. Let dry thoroughly before starting to paint. I suggest leaving a slight overlap with the paper. This will prevent water from seeping into the sides. You can then trim when the painting is dry.

    Can i use any kind of varnish?

    • @dennistheartist
      @dennistheartist 5 років тому +1

      The initial varnish is a special wax varnish which will not lift, smudge or interfere with the watercolour. It is obtainable from art stores. After this had dried I applied 2 coats of normal polyurethane varnish.
