    years of art classes and even a painting class in college, and this is the first I heard of this technique! Thanks! Big help!

      It's crazy that they don't teach this, but at least you know it now :)

    Thank you. I kept wondering why my skin tones were looking so dull -- I was only adding white to get highlight areas instead of white WITH the next color up toward yellow. I can't wait to try it out!

    Thank you so much ! I learned a lot as a new painter. It may seem simple to someone who studied it but not to rest of us. Have to start somewhere

      Vera Campbell just remember if you want high vibrancy (intense color) just mix with the highest value/chroma paints that are closest to your target color to start with. We don’t want you to be discouraged when you can’t mix those vibrant purples (violets) and greens. May I suggest that you look at their “split primary” color mixing system for a more advanced mixing education?

    Great explanation easy to understand. So you dont use black or grey to darken a color use the opposite colo? N no difference then highlight a color use closest to yellow to your base color?

    This is a great video. I still have trouble grasping the difference between tonal value and hue. To me, it seems that brightening the hue achieves the same thing as increasing the tonal value. I know that hue is the actual color. Is value the intensity of the color?

    • @PaintBasket
      @PaintBasket  3 роки тому +1

      Hue is the colour and tonal value is how light or dark the colour is, so they kind of work together as you adjust the colour, it's tonal value may change as well. For tonal value, think of what level of grey the colour would be if you converted it to greyscale (black and white)

    Great video! So for shadow for maroon ball, mix base color ( red and blue) with green?

    • @PaintBasket
      @PaintBasket  4 роки тому +2

      always the opposite colour on the colour wheel. Mixing red and blue give purple, so the opposite is yellow. If you have more red in the mix giving you maroon then the opposite is yellow/green so I would add a light green in to darken it

    Black be made by using all the three primary colour

    • @PaintBasket
      @PaintBasket  2 роки тому

      yes, but you do need to play around with the ratio. The ratio I mention in the video is just a ball park. The actual ratio will depend on when paints you are using :)

    Just found your vids, good stuff! Many months ago, in your How to Paint Portraits video, a gent named Jim asked you to make a video about using the baking paper to transfer the drawing to the canvas; am I just not seeing it, or have you not made it?
    Thanks for your time and experience!

    • @PaintBasket
      @PaintBasket  6 років тому

      I have not created the vid yet. I don't use the baking paper to transfer the drawing to the canvas, I transfer the drawing lines to a sheet of baking paper. I then line this up to the drawing lines on the canvas. That way I can check that the facial features have not "drifted" as I paint. (As you paint over the initial lines it is easy to get warping of the features, eg. the eyes as you cannot see your lines anymore. The baking paper is transparent so allows you to overlay your lines again to check your accuracy)

    HNMM CAN SOMEONE TELL ME... ULTRAMARINE BLUE + ULTRAMARINE RED = NO PURPLE BUT DARK BROWNIE RED!
    WHY?? YES I USED EQUAL AMMOUNT OF EACH.
    🤔🤔🤔🤔

    • @PaintBasket
      @PaintBasket  4 роки тому

      it sounds like you do not have a primary red, but rather one which has been mixed from magenta and yellow. That will give you a brown red because of the yellow in the mix. Primary reds that will give good purples are cadmium red, alizarin crimson and magenta.

      prasaya prasaya would you prefer the triad “primary” set of CYM instead of RYB which is the same theory just another set of “triadic primaries”?
