I'm scared to flat iron since my hair was extremely damaged by a hairstylist, when i was 16, for a photo shoot and i had to star all over again. The only one I trust is my mom who took care of my crown since I was a kid until I decided to do it myself at the age of 13. However, I do trim when necessary on blown out hair and that has contributed a lot to the health and density of my type 4 hair. I had layers from having to big chop the damage but I finally got rid of them after growing my hair to mid back, 3 days ago, since I noticed more tangles with them. Naptural85 explained why in one of her videos. My ends feel amazing and it's very easier to detangle and style now.
Wow, it's so unfortunate that you had that experience with the photo shoot stylist. That actually happens often in the modeling industry when the goal for the hair isn’t health, but to successfully execute a vision. I think that if blowouts are working for you to trim, keep doing it! I’m happy to hear that things worked out for you in the long run! ❤️

I am definitely a curly cut person. I haven't put any sort of iron in my head for at least 3 years, and I don't plan to in the future. It's a lot of work for someone who has ballet multiple times a week. I could never do a hair channel cause I am lazy and all I wear is wash and gos. Also since I have tight and looser sections of hair, I actually need a curly cut or else it would look uneven when it's curly.
I realized what I did to get heat damage last year. Used shea butter products to moisturize and oil instead a real heat protectant. Quite literally fried my hair 🤣 I lost faith that I could it myself and vowed to only go to a salon, but I can see myself straightening my hair again. I love a challenge. But I'll save it for after I've beat my first challenge of growing my hair out.
Oooph…what a realization. I remember back when I was learning, everyone was putting tons of oil on their hair for shine. I’ve done it. The only difference is I’ve always use a heat protectant. I also know some people who have done everything correctly and still get damage. I’m happy you’re past that stage and if you decide to try again you’ll add that step. I’m honestly not an the expert in this category. I recommend using a heat protectant thoroughly throughout the hair after a deep conditioning treatment. Use whatever silkener product you like and light moisturizer. Then work in thin sections on the lowest heat it takes to get straight.

Why did you chose to trim your own hair. Going to a professional for a trim yields the best results. I use to trim my own hair however, I never trimmed enough especially the back of my head thus causing increased split ends resulting in more damage.

This last year I have gotten trims on my type 4 flat ironed hair from Great Clips and they do a good job and have a low price.
