After a year of picking up a Sax for the first time and watching countless UA-cam videos this is the most informative one I have seen yet. My understanding of playing over chords has just gone from zero to a point where I understand the basics and where to start and hopefully progress to full solos. A fabulous video! I've been playing the alto sax for a VERY, VERY long time and never understood what it means to "play over the chords." Thanks to your clever teaching skills, this is no longer a mystery. Today I'm going to find songs I like and start arpeggio-ing over the chords.

This really puts scales, chords, harmony & progression in an understandable context. I love the comparison of the ambiance in the forest (the harmony) to the little events happening there (the melody)
The analogy of the hunter being the melody and the harmony being the forest made sense to me. I have been playing for years and no one has ever put that concept into terms that I understood. And your suggestions of playing arpeggios over the chords first and then playing the scales over the chords makes the whole thing less daunting and much easier to break down into smaller bites. Its like you just said, "slow down and chew your food. It tastes so much better if you eat it properly as opposed to shoving it down your throat just trying to eat it fast." Thank you for this video. Now to the shed I go.
This is the most fundamental and essential lesson, yet always missed by teachers the world over, especially to non-professional musicians like myself. It took me a long time to understand this, yet even watching this it just seems to me that no one ever cared to introduce this. Keep this up, and I hope you find a platform to spread it all over the planet. I was under the impression songs are written in a certain scale, so it must be only the notes in that scale are used in that song, wrong. the chords change, therefore the scales used for soloing too.

Marvellous teaching!! I have practiced playing over 500 solo songs on alto sax in a year, now I am aiming at learning how to improvise. Very clear explanation to starters in consolidating things that we have already acquired and on top of that building up concepts and ways to go in having hands-on practice into it. Thanks.
Florian .... You have done an excellent job explaining what a chord progression is and distinguishing between a melody and harmony! I think it is a foregone conclusion that many of us have not been presented with such an easily understandable and relatable explanation by our respective teachers at the start (just like you - and me included). So, the lack of this kind of teaching/explanation can make any kind of growth seem more difficult than is necessary when trying to learn how to improvise. Improvisation, as we know, is "spontaneous composition" and the fact is, after learning many basics in music theory and practice, the biggest challenge is to understand what we need to do to "put it all together" before we try to actually do it. Thanks for this tutorial. It is fantastic! :-)
I like the idea of playing triads to the chords for a start. I tried it over the chords to a song I've been wanting to learn to play well and did better than I would have expected. I don't have any trouble playing the first, third and fifth of major or minor chords. I guess that's a start.
Brilliant! Absolutely the best explanation of harmony and chords and explanation of “playing over the chords”. You are a very good teacher. One question: at 12:44 you are playing D minor 7th and the notes are very quick - it seems there is a cycle or arpeggio with five (six?) notes being played. I know that a D minor 7th chord is D F A C (1, b3, 5, b7) so maybe you came back to the root note?
You can sing a harmony by yourself by using a vocal harmonizer, but you have to tell the machine what you want. So it takes some work unless you input the info in real time from a guitar or piano etc. It sounds a bit too perfect though.
Am totally new to improvising & only been playing generally (with sheet music) around 6 months both on alto & tenor. I found this video to be very enlightening! Now I’m going to dig out all my favourite songbooks/ chords (that I can’t always find sax music to) & a few of my own basic songs & start doing this right away! I do have a question for you if I may? I have hundreds of backing tracks ( from when I used to sing) so if the backing track says it’s in F which key sheet music should I look for on each sax as a starting point? Many thanks. Jilly
