There is one huge christmas tree in the Marunouchi area. It is inside a building. I do not know which building. I saw it when John (Only in Japan) did a live stream along that street you were on.
Norm, you should go to the Imperial palace. This will be his final appearance as the Emperor. You will witness history as next year will be the end of an old era and the begining of a new one.

Christmas egg! 😂 That was funny. But seriously though, the street of lit up trees dazzled me. It's too bad it's not as decorative as you said it used to be. I would've liked to have seen that.
I live in Georgia. When I was a kid we would go to see the lights at Lake Lanier Park. Worth taking a moment to Google. Of course it's one of those things where pictures never do it justice. Christmas lights have to be seen in person to get the true awe striking experience. That's what the street you walked down reminded me of. Maybe that's why it made me smile so much when I saw it. The glowing lights of nostalgia.

So surprised that the trains stop running every night except New Year's Eve! In the Netherlands, there are some night trains every night *except New Year's Eve*, when all public transport ceases at 8pm! It's the complete opposite!

Great video as always. i'm always surprised how early some things related to Christmas happen in Japan ... I've been in Tokyo in October before now and the trees were already lit up along that road in Maranochi even then and last time I was in the food hall in Isetan they appeared to be taking orders for New Years food in the same sort of time period.
Christmas tree of boars ... freaky.

Re your comment about cleaning: I don't know about now, but it used to be a tradition for British people to scrub their homes before the new year (start fresh) and open their windows and doors on new years banging pots etc to make noise (scare away evil spirits and let in the new year)

Finally it’s November here when I’m watching this, it’s a little chilly, and this is such a great video to tuck into to prepare for the holidays. I love all the little differences that makes the holiday season so different and unique in Japan; it really shows how everyone has their own things they are used to as traditions and makes me want to learn about/experience more

Maybe that's why eveyone in my office is always so shocked when I tell them "no I'm not going home for the holidays. It's time for my yearly winter road trip through Honshu! I do this every year guys why do you keep assuming I'm going back home?" I haven't been back home in a few years and the lack of Christmas vibe in my small town helps with making me completely forget Christmas is just around the corner.

Having spent a week in Japan during the beginning parts of December, I was surprised to see as many Christmas decorations in Tokyo as I did. It's really interesting that since Japan adopted the western calendar instead of the Lunar calendar, all those traditions got shifted up to New Years time frame. In Hong Kong, Christmas decorations and Lunar New Year decorations both have their own spotlight as usually a month of two goes in between the two holidays. Thank you so much for doing this video. It's really great to hear your experience having been in Japan for so long.

Interesting! I had no idea the emphasis was reversed in Japan! Honestly I think I like it better that way. The new year is a new start, so it feels good that it's such a big celebration, whereas Christmas is about a week before the year ends. The more I think about it the more it makes sense! Seems like there's just never a dull moment in Japan. Thanks always for the great videos!

I have always been confused about the fact that people celebrate Christmas on 25th, in Finland (where I'm from) Christmas Eve is the Big Thing when people gather together with their families, go to church and visit the graveyards to light candles. New Years are not as big, but many do fireworks.

The lights are beautiful and I loved how you shared this time of year in your video! In my family Christmas ‘is for family’ and celebrated with a dinner and exchanging gifs at the 24th, and lunch at the 25th with the ones we didn’t get to see or even the same ones with leftovers... New Years is amongst friends, but I love to spend with my parents as well.. it’s a good mixture more ‘party’ like... 😉🇧🇷

Great video. Christmas is a Christian holiday which has been lost even here in the west. We have forgotten what it's meaning is about. Especially to those without family, food, clothing, and a place. For on this day a savior is born! This holiday is about commercialization. Who can get the biggest gift not about who needs help. I was raised as a Buddhist and now a Christian for 23 years. Even Japan has there homeless hidden away. Most japanese don't believe in Buddhist teachings. But go along as something taught but don't believe. But as always love your videos! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Mele Kalikimaka and Hau'oli Makahiki Hou! Enjoy your osechi and ozoni

I don't personally celebrate christmas, but it's everywhere here in the U.S.
Do they play christmas music anywhere there? My least favorite thing here in the u.s. is having to hear the same songs over and over again. Some places put up decorations and play christmas music is mid-november.

I don't know how to feel about Christmas in Japan. Not that it matters, I don't live there and it isn't my culture. Although I remember in the past (been following UA-camrs who live in Japan for a long time... anyone remember tokyocooney...?) And there seemed to be a consensus that even though their festivities are different, they really helped set the atmosphere and it helped a lot of foreigners who were missing home during the holidays.

Hi Norm, thanks for the heads up on the New Year’s meal! Can’t wait to actually be there to try it (coming to Tokyo to experience the Fukubukuro craze next week! ) and hopefully it’ll last us for New Year’s Day since you mentioned that most shops would be closed on that day. 😂

It is very beautiful! Ginza is good, too. Also, go to the "Blue Cave" in Shibuya and see.

Oh my goodness I don't even wanna talk about Japan right now. I have never even wanted to visit Toronto Canada not for any particular reason. Since Taylor has been showing Toronto and all the wonderful Christmas stuff wow. I am highly impressed with that city!!! I know I think I'm gonna go there this Spring and just stay down in financial district and go to all those restaurants! OK back to Japan!

IndigenousPotliquor-check your prices and start saving, Toronto is insanely expensive.

@@JadeCanada237 oh I here you. Really I looked at the prices of hotels right in downtown and if you book it far off in advance they're not that expensive. I'm not talking anything glamorous now. And I would just like to stay in an area where I can just walk around mainly. Then I think I'll eat all my meals at that chef place Taylor just had on her UA-cam channel.

Also im really not surprised that new years is bigger. Japan is predominantly shinto and buddhist so it makes sense they aren't super into a christian/pagan holiday.

Thanks for the Xmas tour, Norm! By chance, have you met/are you friendly with fellow Tokyo Canadians, Simon and Martina? They just posted a Christmas video that talked about how the holiday is more about dates and NYD is the big thing. Plus, they’re from TO (as are you, if I remember correctly) and a helluva a lot of fun. Maybe you three could do a collab video in 2019?
