Everyone says 4-5 inches is perfect but I’m here because you are saying I can go shorter😂 3.5 looks much better IMO but I haven’t been doing it because I have bare spots and wanted to create the best growing practices. I have too much shade, haven’t fertilized hardly at all and only weed control has been one app of Prodiamine. Going to cut shorter, more often, find a cheap fertilizer do get down 4lbs and try to think the massive oak trees I have. Definitely need to add some pods now that were in peak growing weather in South FL
Good video. I’ve mowed my St. Aug at 3-1/4” for many years. The lawn always looks good and healthy 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks! Yeah, I have a buddy that reel mows his at 3” back in CA. His st Aug looks amazing too.
Looking good sir!
Thanks, Larry!
I’ve cut some loose runners and placed them in various thin/ bald spots. The first time I did it, after about 2 weeks of it not growing I thought maybe I should cut it with scissors. After I did that it took off. That one runner now has about 8 runners of its own. My wife caught my out there with the scissors and called me crazy. She thought it was pretty cool once it took off though. It’s a slow process but it does work.
Hi Haff! Thanks so much for sharing! I agree, the process seems slow at first, but it surely works.
I need to try that i never thought of that. You just kinda bury the roots?
What the hell! Damaged area of your lawn looks perfect! come to my home i’ll show you a damaged . I literally have dirt spots everywhere smh 🤦♀️
Thanks, Thanos! Check out my video from earlier this year, I thought it might be dead at first. I’ve had to baby it. I have a few bare spots in the back I’m going to sprig up. I’ll document it. Thanks so much for supporting the channel!
Great video. What fertilizer do you use?
Hi Jimmy! I use mostly yard mastery’s fertilizers. You can find their stuff at this link shrsl.com/3m916 I use the flagship blend in the heart of the season and stress blend in early spring and late fall. Thanks for watching!
I have a zero turn mower and cut with the deck all the way up (5") . This has helped a lot with shade for the roots, however, there are areas that droop. I have over an acer. I'm moving to a new house with a tiny yard so I will be using a walk behind mower. They don't go higher than 4", 3 1/2". I'm worried it's too short. Am I over concerned?
Hi Jim, I have a Honda HRV self propelled and it goes 4” tops. My grass loves 4”. It’s all about consistency. 4” will keep sun off of the roots plenty.
Cut higher in the sun then the shade.
I watched one of your previous videos on your St. Aug 'Palmetto'. Where did you get your plugs from? Rocky Mount area here.
Thanks Colby! I bought mine from SeedLand, but they are shut down it seems. Naturehills.com and Seedworld.com has them right now. I may buy some next week to install in sparse areas.
Looks like naturehills.com has a buy 2 get 2 deal on palmetto plugs right now!
But it looks like seedworld has a better customer rating
@@LKNDIY Awesome. How much shade does your lawn receive? I have settled on either El Toro Zoysia or Palmetto St Augs...just worried about shade from hardwoods in certain areas of my lawn.
I have a ton of hardwoods including a towering maple in my backyard. Palmetto seems to like a bit of shade more than full sun in my experience. Zoysia looks and feels great, but it’s always looking for excuses to go dormant, especially from drought. It needs a lot of water to stay active. I have a neighbor that has zoysia and heat of the summer his grass is on again off again. It also goes dormant early and comes out of dormancy late like Bermuda. My grass stayed green until mid December. You may also want to look at the Scott’s pro vista st Aug. it’s glyphosate tolerant and does not grow as fast as other varieties. The glyphosate tolerance is the real sell. I’m unsure how it does this far north though, but my guess it will do just fine. My buddy has Floratam mostly in Huntersville, and his grass is spectacular.
G'day mate I'm from Australia I have sir Walter buffalo which what you call st Augustine, just wondering how often do you mow in winter
Hi Wayne! Here in North Carolina we get cold enough in the winter to where the grass goes dormant, so no mowing in the winter. In south Florida it stays pretty warm so the grass stays active, and most of what I see is about every two weeks. Really I mow for height rather than time. I more 4 inches high, I I don’t want my grass to get taller than 6 inches. I never want to cut more than 33% off the top off my grass to hit my target mow height. Hope this helps and thanks so much for watching!
@@LKNDIY thanks for getting back to me.im in qld which is similar to your florida
My St. Augustine is pretty full nice and green but it just doesn’t grow vertically. I mean it doesn’t even grow much past the two 2 1/2 inch mark. I have to set my mower to either 2 inches or 2 1/2 inches to actually barely cut the tips off. Soil is very sandy. Any advice?
My soil is mostly clay so I do not have too much experience with Sandy soil, but The Lawn Care Nut has Sandy soil, I’d watch a few of his vids.
Really it comes down to nutrients and if your soil can hold them. How often are you fertilizing? How often do you mow? What type of fertilizer are you using?
I've noticed that compacted and nutrient-lacking areas will stay prostrate and have very little vertical growth. I aerate and then throw down all or either a selection of: Microlife Humates Plus, Microlife 6-2-4 and also apply some Medina Hasta Gro Lawn through a hose-end sprayer. Noticeable difference of the grass thickening and going vertical around 3 weeks following application of either.
I also sometimes get iron deficiency because of my pebbly, red clay soil (grass blades start yellowing) and growth is stunted. I make a mix of Fertilome Chelated Liquid Iron with water and spray per the directions. The organic fert. I mentioned also gives some iron and both it and the chelated liquid iron fix that issue.
I think my backyard is at 5 inches or more. I have tried to move up frequency on my mowing.
How can I cut it down to 4 inches without damaging my grass? I believe I'm getting the wide blades with drooping
Hi Chris! If your grass is even 6” you should be good to cut down to 4” per the “one-third rule” without any damage. I’ve let mine grow tall due to circumstances outside of my control, and sometimes we have to bite the bullet and mow at the highest setting we can, then mow a little lower 2-3 days later until we get back to desired height. I’d get out and mow today to not let the grass get any taller. Excited to hear how it goes! 👍
@@LKNDIY for sure. I'll try that. I will have to get out there an extra 1-2 more times this week
@@LKNDIY ha. I was deceived! I have recently learned that what I thought was St. Augustine grass is actually smoothCrabgrass. it is everywhere! I will have to treat post and pre to make sure I have a better year next year. I just purchased my home in lat winter and moved here early spring so I had already lost forthisyear. LoL
@@chrishoward574 that’s funny! Easy to make the mistake in a new lawn. Is it all crabgrass, or crab mixed with st Aug? Will you have to renovate the lawn from scratch?
I cant get mine to come in that thick
I don't see a lot of thatch in your yard, what is your secret?
Hi Ron! Thanks for watching. I grew this grass from plugs last year, so not a lot of time for thatch to accumulate. When it does I will add a liquid dethatcher. Hope this helps!
@@LKNDIY When I put my plugs down a few years ago I didn't know anything about thatch until one winter damaged my grass. I'm in VA. It's nice to see someone in NC growing St Augustine with the same weather conditions.
@@rong648 I was wondering if anyone was growing St Aug further north! That’s amazing!
@@LKNDIY I was the first in my neighborhood, now I have three neighbors with St Augustine.
