Everyone that is hating CLEARLY doesn’t know your channel because you go above and beyond for every animal you get. I have always respected you for doing good research before getting pets & always preaching to do the same. You are an amazing pet owner.
@Elan Caldwell actually depending on the hermit crab size you only need 5 gallons to 10 gallons per her crab and also she is really good with animals and she knows what she’s doing
Hello:) I have had hermies for many years and have had good luck with keeping them alive (8 years and counting) here are some things I have learned along the way! ( a lot of these things were mentioned) - I know you said it but a 20 gallon seems to make them the happiest - lots of extra shells ranging from smaller than what they are in to larger than what they are in - lots of hides and shelters -they LOVE to climb ( climbing wall, cholla wood, etc.) - they love fresh fruits and veggies - it is cheaper to buy the blocks of eco earth and just make it yourself - the tiny container they came in will make a great travel carrier
My hermit crabs also love popcorn, it’s a perfect treat as long as it’s all natural of course. And if you aren’t doing this already a spray bottle works great for keeping the humidity up.
When I added fake plants my crabs tried to eat them so I ended up having to take them out and add more sticks and chola wood for them to climb on. Just watch them for a week or so and inspect the plants to make sure they aren’t trying to eat them. Also they love popcorn!
I always struggle when I see poorly treated animals at stores because I don’t want to give them money to support that behavior but at the same time I know it’s a death sentence for the ones already there :(
but as sad it is the best thing you can do about something like that is to leave them there so they dont make the money on them and see this brings no profit :/
I saw a sick rat at pet smart once. He had an eye infection and he was being kept alone away from the other male rats, it was so hard for me to leave him and I cried in the car because I wanted to get him and take him to the vet so badly.
I don’t have hermit crabs but the UA-cam channel Lori’s Hartland has great hermit crab videos and has a playlist of all of her Hermit crab vids Hope this helps but thank you for doing this it’s saving these crabs lives
You can go to “hermits, hounds and horses” she is really great too, and she provides the correct care for hermit crabs and a couple other animals. But she focuses mostly on hermit crabs 🐚🦀😊
They are super smart and escape artists! 😂 We had 3 that my parents bought for my kids from Myrtle Beach. We had them for four years and enjoyed them a lot. The kids loved to make mazes for them. They passed away and we never replaced them. We loved having them. Enjoy!! 🦀
I’m happy you are doing your best to help these hermit crabs. These little hermits seem to enjoy their temporary cage, good job for your part in helping hermit crabs
This makes me so sad! I used to see hermits for sale at the beach when I was little and lived in Cali, but my parents would never let me get any. I was always drawn to them but was too young to realize the condition they were in😔 so happy that you are rescuing these babies!! 🦀
I didn't wanna watch this video because I miss my hermit crab soooo much!! I had him for over 10 years!! He was the coolest little dude. I used to have a ton of hermit crabs but none of them survived. He was the first and last one. He will always have a special place in my heart. You're amazing for rescuing these precious creatures. 💜
honestly I don’t get the hate because you know what you are doing and we can tell how passionate you are about animals and we know you take care of them so keep on doing you❤️
Awesome! You’ve made an awesome crabitat for these guys! A tip I have would be to get a spray bottle to mist down your substrate and even the glass. I’ve found that keeping the substrate decently saturated with water is a good way to keep the tank humid. I would also recommend closing off the areas where the humidity can escape (or where the crabs could escape because they are really good at that!) :D In my habitat the tank has a lid with holes in it so I ran into the issue of it being too dry, I ended up sealing it off using plastic wrap and taping it down. It’s a cheap alternative than buying a whole new lid that fits just right. Oh, also! Joanns has those green (non painted) kinds of shells in their sea decoration aisles and you can buy a whole bag with different sizes for them to try out.
I admire you for doing this. I remember always being disgusted as a child walking into those beach shops and seeing how the crabs were treated. I also admire that your hair, shirt and makeup match 😂❤️
Alyssa, I am just watching this video. You are soo sweet! You are trying soo hard to make their lives better and you did. I have watched many of your videos and even the upgrades for your hermit crabs. I just wanted to comment. Your heart is in the right place, you do the best you know to do, and always improve on things when you see the need. Don't ever change.
I Own hermit crabs two and I wanted to give you a few tips that work for me. If you clean there tank you can bathe them with a little water and they really like it just make sure it’s conditioned. and. For your shells I think your hermit crabs are purple pinchers so try have round big openings. I love your channel hope this helps.
It's not criticism or anything, I'm really impressed with how much you knew before owning them, because they are one of the most neglected animals so I am so happy you did your research! When I looked up things on my own I found out that they live in really big colonies and like being around each other and chirping and having a good time. They are very social creatures. And as you said that one is more active than the other, maybe you could go by a store and get a few more to get the active crab to have more buddies to climb around with. Otherwise, awesome set up! I love how natural you made their new home. :)
This is great! I’m a hermie owner myself. I love my fellars, but it’s hard! I was to add pls put your heater ABOVE the substrate! Don’t heat the sand the humidity will do that!
You clearly care so much about animals and I literally CANNOT see what people see when they say you’re abusing them or whatever. You go above and beyond and research and always try to do your best for them! Most people would just look at the free hermit crabs and say “aww damn wish I could save one” but you ACTUALLY did! Go you boo!
Dried shrimp is good for them. My husband like to give ours dried bananas. This makes me happy to see someone else rescue hermit crabs. I have four of them and love them very much. Also try to get natural shells for them. It's better for them
once you get home, if you can, go to the dollar store and get abunch of vines and plants for them to climb on. they also sell suction cup hook at dollar tree to hang the plants on the tank, you can also use any of the hammocks that lummos dosent like for the crabs to climb on.! good luck!💜
I've never seen hermit crabs being sold in the UK so never knew how they were treated until I met someone that rescued them. Honestly horrifying. Felt so sad seeing them in your video in those shells with nothing in the tank :( Glad at least two will have a nice life ❤️
Yeah I watch loris hartland too and that sand can solidify inside of their shell and get stuck. Instead just use eco earth. You should also get a food bowl so they don’t eat their substrate. Other than that you did good! Thank you for rescuing them!
The tank looks absolutely awesome! Like it genuinely looks so good. One thing I have to point out is that you should put the heat pad above the substrate line to heat up the air in the tank and not the substrate. Other than that you're doing so great, keep up the good work😊
i have a hermit crab but i’ve had three in total. i always make there enclosure have sand and have soil but i never mix them. i also have a coconut house as a hideout for our hermit crab it’s a bit bigger but he also climbs it on occasion. If your ever at an ocean beach again or know someone that goes often, see if you can get a piece of brain coral! my hermit crab loves his piece of brain coral from Cozumel and over the past for years he has eaten about a third of it! Don’t worry though, we did research to make sure it was ok hermit crabs to have. He also enjoys climbing it! I hope these few things helped out :)
Also I would recommend adding cuttle bone into the enclosure it's a good source of calcium 🖤🖤 also your can find it in the bird section at the petsore it the cheapest
this makes me so happy im binging your videos, iver been watching since your ear strecthing jourerny , we have been growing together and thankyou for always bwing so postive, like i cant. you are amazing
Just make sure no painted shells. Substrate needs to be 6 inches max and I suggest coconut fiber my crab did fairly well in it he didn’t seem to really like sand. I had him for two years and the best thing that you could do for them is feed them fresh vegetables and fruit and for protein they’re scavengers so the mealworms probably are fine but mine ate Ham and turkey. Anyways make sure there’s plenty of enrichment and climbing items
they use toxic paint, they also force them into the shells after taking them from the wild! Crabs often get shoved into the shells when the paint is still sticky and they get stuck. They are very sensitive to chemicals, and it’s often said the paint is meant for them which is a lie to get more money. They also often chew their shells or their friends do to get calcium and end up eating the paint and dying. Overall it’s just bad, plus natural shells look so much better.
Potentially An Artist just like humans paint is toxic if ingested by the crabs. What happens over time due to the high humidity and wetness in the enclosure the paint eventually chips off and so when it chips it can get into their water dish ect. And they can potentially ingest it . They’re also very sensitive to chemicals so the fumes from the paint can also wind up killing your crab.
4:22 yeah same, i remember wanting them because i’ve always liked animals and they had such pretty shells, but i now know how poorly they’re treated. it looks painful when their shells get ripped off just for a painted one.
We would recommend a thin layer of glass rocks or something for the water dishes. They will keep the crabs from getting stuck and drowning. Also a small crew of isopods would be benefiting to help keep it clean. Also maybe small hooks or clasps for keeping the netting down on the lid better, because crabs are strong and might be able to escape under the mesh you have. Otherwise it looks great for what you have to work with
Your hermit crab enclosure looks awesome. But when you you first get hermit crabs you want a low level of substrate, so that they don’t try to molt. The first week should be focused on getting them to eat. Hope this helps!
I haven't done much research but I've been told the best enclosure would be a 55 gallon with tons of eco earth to burrow in? Similar to hamsters with bedding lol. But not sure, since I haven't done much research for myself.
I have hermit crabs of my own so I have some advice for you. When you clean out the cage you should rinse out all of the their items ( food/water containers +toys) with distilled water because tap water is very bad for them. You should also spray distilled water above their tank so that way it’s more humid for them but don’t spray to close to the ground or it will mold. When you buy shells for them don’t get painted ones the paint can harm them. So they can stay healthy you can buy some Vitamin tablets at Petco there pink. They can grow to the size of your palm if you maintain them this also means they can be loud at night when the move around, I have a two story house and my crabs are on the bottom floor but I can here them at night from my room upstairs. They can be pretty loud so I hope they don’t bother you much and that my advice helped. I also just wanna say that it makes me happy to see that your taking care of all your animals and that you put out time for them, it just puts a smile on my face😊❤️
I had a 55gal tank as my main tank, petsmart dollar a gallon sell is/was amazing. The small tank will be a good quarantine tank. If anyone gets sick or you get any more, can put them in that smaller tank before introducing them to the main tank. and yes a tall vase, air pump, flat back marbles, an aerator to put on the end of the tube makes an amazing humidifier that does not have to be refilled as often as a pool does.
I'm really late but you don't really need the heater unless it's really cold where you're at and I suggest a 20 gallon tank because those are the best and you need to have more than two hermit crabs you need to have at least four because my aunt used to breed them
Hi! I have a few suggestions. Zoo med heaters can be fire hazards, so you should get them a bean farm one (there’s another brand too but I can’t remember what it’s called). The heat pad should be above the substrate, you want to heat the air not the sand. And if you’re having trouble with keeping humidity, I use Saran Wrap on top of the lid and it helps a lot
it would be very good for them to change shells, especially because one of the hermit crabs shell is painted, a painted shell is toxic for the hermit crabs, but if they changed they should be fine.
Crabs have gills instead of lungs so if there is no humidity they cannot breathe properly sorry I love telling people about crabs as I’m very passionate about them :)
When I went to Orlando Florida just this summer ‘20 at Daytona beach they had like at least 30 baby turtles on a 10galon tank for sale 😕 it was so sad I always seen videos of people saving them. I wish I could have
I rescued two from family members a few years ago and had them live for another 2 years and from what I’ve heard was pretty damn good for them being from a beach store.
I bought a few hermit crabs from a mall 10 years ago...and mine are still alive and growing! Unfortunately one got eaten while molting awhile back, but there are still two doing great. Crazy how long they’ve lived! ❤️
I reccomend a 29 gallon as it provides eighteen inches of height, as they need a lot of substrate and climbing space Crab Central Station is a really good channel for hermit crab care.
Their shells always need to turned over so if they molt they can find a shell quickly. Always get shells a size bigger than their shells.because they molt constantly
Hermit crabs don’t need a shell right after a molt! They may choose to change or may not change after a molt. They molt in their shells, and before changing they’ll turn them around a lot anyway.
Watch crab street journal, crab central station, and hermits, hounds, and horses! They are the best for crabs. Pine wood is toxic ( that is what the half log is made out of) ✌️the heat pad needs to be on the back of the tank completely above the substrate
they do molt a lot and if they go down and molt and you don’t see them for a while they are ok as long as the tank doesn’t smell bad but if it starts too then search.i love your channel and i was wondering if we could have updates.😊
Hermit crabs need up to 6 inches to dig from the bottom of their shell and to the top of their shell so they can molt and find the new shell safely also keep bigger shells in the tank than what they have so they can find what shell they want.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful hermit crab adoption story. I'm glad you rescued them. I have two pet hermit crabs. They are beautiful and great climbers. They never seem to eat anything but they're still alive. (-: xo
Yay! I have hermit crabs to! I have 3 2 together and 1 by itself cus the other died. The ones with the painted shells it can kill them the paint can flake off and they might eat it. And you can buy fresh water and salt water in bottles at pet stores. I don’t know if you know this already but there place needs to be moist so like get a spray bottle and u can use distilled water or u can take tap water and mix it with a bit of declore I think I don’t rememberwhat it’s called but it’s for fish usually but if u mix it with the water then put it in a spray bottle and spray them that little thing u bought tells u the temperature and the moisture make sure that they kinda stay in the yellow at 75.You have to spray them a few times a day. And don’t get to worried when they bury them selves and barely come out a lot ( oops I didn’t watch the whole vid before typing this) I don’t know if any of this was helpful it seems like u know ur stuff. 😊😊☺️
Make sure you have five inches or more substrate (i think you have enough I recommend Velcro as it looks nicer than tape A cute decoration idea is to buy burlap ribbobon
i did the same thing two years ago. i get my shells off etsy and have been using the same variety pack of turbo shells since i got them (they’re only $15-$20 for a 24 pack). highly recommend going on there instead of amazon or petsmart for their supplies. there’s also lots of DIY crabitat ideas on pinterest!
Since this was made about 2 months ago could you please give us an update on the hermit crabs, Any changes made to their tank, and like any tips you have for us hermit crab owners. 😊
I just got hermit crabs from my friend who couldn’t take care of them anymore, I wouldn’t think I would care for them this much but now that I see them I want to give them a better tank and much more things. I’m hoping to do a big upgrade ;)
I had my hermies for 4 yrs and loved them but I just couldn't keep up with water changes and the food. Thank you for getting them beach stores are the absolute worst
Your hermit crab cage is amazing . I’m so glad you saved some of then . And I don’t know if you know this or not but hermit grabs can not have painted shells it’s toxic to then I don’t mean any hate by this at all I just wanted to let you know just in case . Love you 😍

@Elan Caldwell She doesn’t even have them anymore. Go somewhere else bro lmao

Exactly
Hello:) I have had hermies for many years and have had good luck with keeping them alive (8 years and counting) here are some things I have learned along the way! ( a lot of these things were mentioned)
- I know you said it but a 20 gallon seems to make them the happiest
- lots of extra shells ranging from smaller than what they are in to larger than what they are in

-they LOVE to climb ( climbing wall, cholla wood, etc.)
- they love fresh fruits and veggies
- it is cheaper to buy the blocks of eco earth and just make it yourself
- the tiny container they came in will make a great travel carrier

I don’t have hermit crabs but the UA-cam channel Lori’s Hartland has great hermit crab videos and has a playlist of all of her Hermit crab vids

Love how she got all of those fruits and vegetables for two hermit crabs 🐚🖤🤎💯💨 luv your vids
I had my hermit crabs in a massive 75 gallon tank, they had bubbling pools and everything it was awesome but they were a lot of upkeep!
Thank tank look great, just make sure to get shells without paint or a clear gloss on them
petco $1 per gallon sale is always a really good deal when you need a 20 gallon!
Ya definitely! I just got a 20 gallon tank for 20 bucks when it was originally 49.99! It was a great deal
I'm pretty sure petco stopped running that sale. At least in my area.
it would be very good for them to change shells, especially because one of the hermit crabs shell is painted, a painted shell is toxic for the hermit crabs, but if they changed they should be fine.
Crabs have gills instead of lungs so if there is no humidity they cannot breathe properly sorry I love telling people about crabs as I’m very passionate about them :)

She knows listen
I’m sure she will provide the correct humidity! She has done research
Lucy Whipple I commented before the whole video ty
sophies life I understand that but new crab keepers have trouble sometimes no matter how much reasearch different sources say all different things
I reccomend a 29 gallon as it provides eighteen inches of height, as they need a lot of substrate and climbing space
Crab Central Station is a really good channel for hermit crab care.
I had the same problem with fish when our Walmart had fish
Never taken care of
When it’s not hard to take care of them
Watch crab street journal, crab central station, and hermits, hounds, and horses!
At ocean city maryland tons of stores sell them and they’ve always been free. All you had to buy was this small circle cage.
Thats where I got my little guy, I've almost had him a year
Hermit crabs are so cuteeeeee😍
Hermit crabs need up to 6 inches to dig from the bottom of their shell and to the top of their shell so they can molt and find the new shell safely also keep bigger shells in the tank than what they have so they can find what shell they want.
you should get a rope lizard lounger, my hermit crabs love climbing that. i also recommend eco earth
That is one amazing tank set up for them. You did a awesome job. They will be happy.
If you're near a Petco we are having a $1 a gallon sale so a 20 gallon tank would only be $20+tax until 8/22
Omg ur pets r sooooo cute love ur content!
I just wanted you to know that you do a great job with your animals and your inspiring me to be like you and do a great job as you
Thanks for sharing your beautiful hermit crab adoption story. I'm glad you rescued them. I have two pet hermit crabs. They are beautiful and great climbers. They never seem to eat anything but they're still alive. (-: xo
omg this part 9:04 warmed my heart AWWW
Make sure you have five inches or more substrate (i think you have enough
I recommend Velcro as it looks nicer than tape
A cute decoration idea is to buy burlap ribbobon
i did the same thing two years ago. i get my shells off etsy and have been using the same variety pack of turbo shells since i got them (they’re only $15-$20 for a 24 pack). highly recommend going on there instead of amazon or petsmart for their supplies. there’s also lots of DIY crabitat ideas on pinterest!
Alyssa Nicole DM’d you on insta
At the daycare I used to work at we had hermit crabs omg the kids loved them
Since this was made about 2 months ago could you please give us an update on the hermit crabs, Any changes made to their tank, and like any tips you have for us hermit crab owners. 😊
I just got hermit crabs from my friend who couldn’t take care of them anymore, I wouldn’t think I would care for them this much but now that I see them I want to give them a better tank and much more things. I’m hoping to do a big upgrade ;)
I would keep the shells on the eco earth/sand mixture with the opening face you 🙂
absolutely love your videos! I have been binge watching them!
My hamster LOVES coconut fiber soil lol it’s so cute
I had my hermies for 4 yrs and loved them but I just couldn't keep up with water changes and the food. Thank you for getting them beach stores are the absolute worst
Crab central Station is a good channel to learn from they go over everything
I wish I had some advice to give you, but all I can say is that I'm happy that you rescued them.
Your hermit crab cage is amazing . I’m so glad you saved some of then . And I don’t know if you know this or not but hermit grabs can not have painted shells it’s toxic to then I don’t mean any hate by this at all I just wanted to let you know just in case . Love you 😍
looking great, Alyssa. They look happy in their new home. Maybe place some vines to cover up the white tape?
