- In this video I start work on building the frame rails for the car that I'm going to build from scratch. the car is going to be modeled after the IndyCars of the 20s and 30s. This is going to be a very long-term project, but its already been a lot of fun! Hours spent on this build total 27

Very exciting! When I was a kid, I owned a 1/4 Midget Indy Racer. Watching this build is going to bring back a lot of memories.

this was the first time I used TIG aside from a few little things and I'm enjoying it
From what I remember from my days working in oil field construction, TIG is the cleanest bead weld you can put down.
yeah, it takes a lot more prep since the metal needs to to be really clean, but the result is much nicer

this is the first time I've used the TIG welder very much and i'm really enjoying it. its nice to not have to worry about a shower of molten steel beads raining down on my feet lol.

I did not know you can TIG too did you just get a TIG machine? you are so very talented I bet your dad is a awesome fabricator too for you to know all this at such a young age. What do you do for a living with those mad skills ,hope you are using those skills to make you some money , any fab shop would hire you in a second with your background LOL!! This is the best idea yet!!! I love the look of those older model Indy cars. Yeah this will be a big project, but you see to be having fun and you have pride of what you do, which makes these videos so much fun to watch! I have a couple questions though... What type of engine are you going to use and What type of transmission are you going to use for this Indy Car? But Great work and can't wait for this new series!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm not sure on the drivetrain yet
Rather than weld that triangle pieces of plate on the inside as you did. Use two pieces cut to the angle that you want twice the width in its length each side of the pie cut. Each side can be placed inside the tube on each side and plug welded through holes in the tubing on the side to weld insert to outside of tubing ( called a fish plate and a lot stronger).
This ought to be a fantastic project.
This is one of my dreams as well, hope i may ever build one myself
I want to do something like this someday! Except my idea is to make a rat rod style coupe and instead of using basic old school stuff, I’d just swap in the entire drive train and components of a modern Dodge Challenger SRT. 6.4 L hemi, AWD swap, supercharger, all the computers and whatnot. Old school looks, new school guts. Street legal and a beast of a machine on the track.

Glad to see this build I'm going to watching this on close I've been looking at the old school midget racers my self I was curious as to what engine your going to run in it are you going 4 cylinder or the 6 cylinder with the pipes through the hood or the header with the long 3 or 4 inch pipe from front to rear

A suggestion. You could use a Pontiac Quad4 engine for power. Its a four cyl, just like the Offenhousers they used back then, and when the plastic trim parts are removed, it has a simular look as the old engine. It makes about 165 hp. and is adaptable to any number of tranny's.
MacroMachines I like the way you made all those cuts in order to make the bend smooth, I do that on my builds but I only make one cut and bend it, the way you did it (with a few cuts close together) makes it look a lot better, I hope you don't mind me coping that on my future builds, cheers

Hey, looks like it's going to be an exciting build, just started watching it today. Love these old racers. I had a question... Are you working off of self designed plans, or pictures of a specific car? The reason I am asking, is that the frame geometry already seems locked into a very specific vehicle arrangement. Thanks for the videos... I've always wanted to do the same kind of build with a Morgan 3 wheeler as my muse. Certainly of the same iconic shape...👍
I pretty much just did research on a lot of cars that I liked, and used pictures to design the frame

I was wondering why you did not plan on plating your cuts from the start? rather than making a ton of tiny cuts? Just seems like it would have been much easier? Or maybe that is what you found out afterwards? Anyway, love it

@@nightster6378 I didn't dislike the video but constructive critisism, if you ever do a frame in the future, its just better to be safe then sorry, add some extra metal on your bends, thats where a lot of frames go wrong.
love the video, but I would highly recommend you to get a portable band saw. it would make things way easier

Make sure to keep track of all of the receipts for all of the materials that you are using for the build and document the entire process with plenty of pictures so that you can get a title for it when you are done and actually drive it on the road and have insurance. It is a huge pain to get a homemade vehicle titled but if you can tell them exactly what it cost to build and have proof in pictures it will make it a lot easier on you. Did you get the drive train yet?
yeah, my dad and I talked to a friend who registers titles on stuff like this to figure out what things to keep in mind and that was one of them.

I'm not really sure. best case scenario would be an early ford v8, but I'll figure it out when I get to that point.
Hey why dont you use a flap disc and grind a Vee shape on all your cuts. That way you have more weld and penitration after you grind it flat!!!

one option i think realy has the look of a classic racing engine is an old jaguar inline XK6 wish came in about every jaguar made from 1949 up to about 1992 and had a realy nice dohc head with smooth polished aluminium valvevovers
the trans usually was a GM th350 or400 with a jaguar bellhousing , you probably whon't be able to find those cheap in the states though
in europe these engines survive the cars by decades , they where realy whell made inlike the metal of the body (they rusted out )
another option would be a flathead mill , though these whont be cheap either
too bad you done make a midget version of the car , those usually where powered by T ford stuff
I used to read boys books by William Campbell Gault and he had several books about guys building their own cars to race at Indy!

the TIG welder gives a much cleaner better looking weld so i used that for most of it, but I went with the MIG for filling in most of the bend area because it's a lot faster and I dont have a ton of filler rod.

Ok, so I have a question for you. If you build a car from scratch, then technically it is the model year that it is built and registered in and since this is a car, wouldn't you have to meet all the 2018 CAR specs? Air bags, bumper requirements, EPA emissions, etc? I think that people get around these things by making 3 wheeled "cars" that are actually classified as motorcycles. Just wondering because I don't see many people trying to build their own street legal cars and I think it may be for that reason. Great videos!
no. it's possible to get a title for an actual car and just "attach" it to what you're building (assuming what you're building will resemble that car). if you don't do that though it gets registered as a "special construction" vehicle which has certain requirements that vary by state. airbags, emissions, and things like that aren't part of those requirements.

Any reason you didnt use an oxy to roll/bend the rails?
What tubing did you use for the frame? Dimensions and wall thickness
