I first saw this video 10 years ago, and watching it again now, I am still gobsmacked by elegant design and careful attention to detail that Gary puts into every one of his creations. Nowadays, I am proud to call Gary my friend, and he's still living the dream with more fantastic vehicles coming out of his workshop. A true American treasure!
Agreed. I caught myself holding back a tear or two as well... just magic to see such an amazing machine being driven and appreciated, by men that are soooo passionate about automobiles, (instead of leaving them indoors for decades, because they are too precious.)
Wow. After a weeklong marathon, I've finally finished watching every vid from Jay Leno's Garage. Thanks for the uploads, and thanks for sharing so many amazing and beautiful autos! It's great seeing these rare beauties actually driven and enjoyed. I can't wait for new episodes!
Jay leno"s Garage is the best show on UA-cam No other show comes close to the amount of content that he puts out with each one of his episodes. Its not just about the cars, its also about the amazing people that are behind the making of these works of art and amazing machinery, and the history of it all, and he grasps each and everyone of those points every time. Great Series Jay, keep up the Great work. I just wanted to let you know all of us enjoy your work and this hobby, thanks for sharing!
I'm building a Special here in Ireland from various 1920s cars and bits, and I find myself returning to this video for inspiration more often than any other. I love it. I'm afraid I'm in agreement with most people regarding the fenders / wings, but I can see that they've been perfectly executed, and actually if they'd been original, i.e. made by some of the more flamboyant pre-war coachbuilders, most people would be praising them and thanking this gentleman for having preserved them. (Plus plenty of crazy Indian potentates back in the day were buying RR chassis and having bodies built on them to imitate swans and the like, so they could be worse. Plus they're not integral, so he or a future owner can easily swap them out for more conventional ones.) But forget the wings - my God, everything else on these cars is perfection. The designs, the details, the build quality, the exquisite metalwork and woodwork... these machines are complete visions of beauty. I adore them. P.s. I also love the driving music - totally reminds me of late-90s / early 00s Ibiza trance soundtracks... anyone know what it is?
The fenders stuck out for me also. I like the open wheel look, it adds a racing feel to the car, I think a bonnet type fender would look a bit classier and blend in better. With the shake in the fenders at speed or on an uneven piece of road you have to wonder how long they can hold their shape before the wind bends them even higher. Love the boat look, as well as the aviation influence in other cars of the age.
Two beautiful automobiles. It must be incredibly satisfying to own and drive a car restored by your very own hand. Nice (and appropriate) soundtrack too.
I've appreciated so many of the cars Jay Leno has shown, but these fenders (wings) look all wrong. I know that lots of these cars would also be dangerous in a collision, but to add these which look absolutely lethal just seems to be taking it too far. They also look odd with the holes in the supporting struts which doesn't feel right with the period.
Jay is a true car guy. I remember when he was doing a video on a 60's Chrysler 300. He said "It's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than it is to drive a fast car really fast." You get that from a lot of the cars that he does. He's a true car guy. Drive it, no matter what, and understand the nature of it. I feel the same way about an 80cc ATV. It's slow, but it's so simple, it becomes a part of you.
Beautifully done, makes you realize how much thought goes into a modern car, things like not being able to fall out if you hit a bump or swerve a bit, hate to see what happens if you lock the brakes, of course great job
Rather gratifying to see this level of craftmanship, inspired by a love for the automotive, still being applied today. And for those purists who despair that these are not 'original' cars, coachbuilders of the 1920s varied massively and used wood and other biodegradable materials and so even ten or so years later the original bodywork would have rotted through anyway. Original bodywork is literally rot. This coachbuilding is inspired and preserves a worthy heritage while affirming a new legacy for future generations to admire.
Jay Lenos Garage was/is in so many regards ahead of its time. I watch this now and feel sad that I discovered it 5years after it came out. This channel would earn a lot more subscribers/support if you ask me.
A few years ago I was at Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch in Carmel and I saw both those cars just parked in the parking lot like any others. There was almost no one around and I just walked up to them. You think they look nice on UA-cam, you should see them in person. Beautiful!
This appears to be the first video in Jay Leno's UA-cam channel. I like it. Rolls-Royces are interesting cars(especially the old ones). Great video, Mr. Leno!
Man I guess I was lucky as I got to get up close in personal with a boat tailed Rolls in the early 90s just starting in auto parts. Trucker buddy of coworker was hauling several high end cars bought by a Japanese businessman who wanted them shipped overseas. He stopped by to visit his old navy buddy and I got invited to check out his cargo. Can’t remember the others like 1 or 2 more but the rollls with boat looking details I’ll never forget. Especially the quality woodwork.
These Rolls Royces remind me of the 17Ex phantom 1 built by Jarvis of Wimbledon and owned by Maharaja of Kashmir, it was an experimental car for Rolls to achieve 100 kmph and then sold to Maharaja Kashmir because it could be driven in mountainous terrain with ease. That Rolls was also known as an extraterrestrial dragonfly.
Jay. I wasn't happy with you or your jokes when you took over for Johnny. I use to stay up late as boy and watch Johnny on a little 11x15" black and white tv. Johnny made me laugh. Jay. I watched you as much as I could but eventually had to switch to Letterman. But Jay. Jay...I love cars. And now 35 years later I find myself staying up late watching your videos on a 13" laptop thankful and grateful for your enthusiasm and stewardship for and of the history and preservation of these machines. I'm learning so much and want to Thank you. Thank man for sharing. Unimaginably therapeutic.
I think they called them 'Coach Builders' ! A term that could use run around a bit to stay fresh! Thank You Jay for showing us G. Wales Coach Builder of 'Leno Scale'
he needs to do a video (or videos) on what the controls do and how they work in each of his cars (at least for the ones that are un-conventional). A good example would be how to operate a model T, which is completely different than driving a standard car.
I think it is amazing that these cars were saved and re-built in the spirit of how the luxury cars of the day were built originally. By that I mean RR delivered a chassis and a coach builder did the bodywork. I admire the history of the donated RR becoming an ambulance hearse. That would have also been an interesting restoration. If it were not for this enthusiast these cars would have been left to rust so in that respect even turning them into rat rods is better than letting them become re-bar.
when i saw that amberlamps picture i was drooling. i realize it may be a bit macabre but i would rather drive that than these sportier, albeit super nice, convertibles. the proportions are just so odd and interesting on that thing and there is nothing else like it on the road.
I think we can all agree that those fenders ruin what would otherwise be a great build. It's frustrating to see someone come so close to building a masterpiece and then flub it so spectacularly with those awful wind catchers.
Two exquisite RR's. I'm not too crazy about the French fenders, but they grow on you. Would be proud to own either - except I never will...retired on a pension that does not include purchasing classic Rolls Royce cars!
Wow. If I were younger, I think I'd offer to work in Gary's shop for free. Imagine making your living building these things. Yes, the wood is steam bent.
Awesome great job I love these cars and to those people being so critical if you don't like the video don't watch it and I'd dare to say most of you people doing the critizing have never owned a car that's more than 10 years old also if you don't like what you go build your own remember these cars started out as derelict's now there being seen and enjoyed not sitting in a garage hidden away from the world if you don't have any thing good to say don't say anything at all
This guy is an absolute craftsman. I could not do this even if I was afforded the chance to live forever. My version of this would look like a melted Volkswagen Beetle.
thx for the video Mr. Leno. You should bring him back I the garage again, I felt like we only got half the story and to little engine talk no disrespect:-) keep en coming Mr. Leno :-) thank god you have the money to bring this to the people :-)
I think the the overall sportster design is nice with the lovely boattail. Although the aero-inspired wing supports are a nice touch, I find the wings (fenders) a bit odd and ungainly on these cars. I agree that the dual-hinge engine hood is an improvement, but the little centre windscreen to line up with the hood is a bit pernickety. But it's all a question of personal taste. The overall work quality is brilliant, with fantastic attention to detail.
I first saw this video 10 years ago, and watching it again now, I am still gobsmacked by elegant design and careful attention to detail that Gary puts into every one of his creations. This man is a soaring eagle. He brings tears to my eyes. What a beautiful artist, engineer, person.
His skills are way off the chart.
Agreed. I caught myself holding back a tear or two as well... just magic to see such an amazing machine being driven and appreciated, by men that are soooo passionate about automobiles, (instead of leaving them indoors for decades, because they are too precious.)
The late 30's was the heyday for boat tail cars.Much love to Gary for this most proper interpretation.
I had such a smile on my face and didn't really realize it when they had the music playing & out driving the two cars on the road.
What!? 11 years ago?
The two cars always go out together. Something romantic about that.
But in this modern world, they're a gay couple, because that's totally acceptable now.
That's gay
Wow.
After a weeklong marathon, I've finally finished watching every vid from Jay Leno's Garage.
Thanks for the uploads, and thanks for sharing so many amazing and beautiful autos!

Hi
Jay Leno is the MAN! He knows and loves vehicles and I love how he supports the industry with his money!

Should be doing my homework but I'm trapped in these Jay Leno Garage videos
Nick I have an exam tomorrow
This is probably more useful than your homework
You will probably learn more from mr leno.
That’s a good placed to be trapped while you’re supposed to be doing homework.

His workmanship is incredible!! Love to see what's next!

Lol. The song that was playing in the background while jay was driving the car, made it seem like a life-changing moment. xD
Love the enthusiasm of this designer. Top workmanship. I personally love the style ,Although not to everyone's tastes (what do they know!!)
Two beautiful automobiles. It must be incredibly satisfying to own and drive a car restored by your very own hand. Nice (and appropriate) soundtrack too.
The fenders remind me of a boat's wake. At first I didn't know how I felt about them, but when I came to that interpretation, I came to like them.
Design sensitivity and workmanship absolutely DIVINE. These two creations are something to behold.
Beautiful but for those horrible "fenders"...
Matt Gerrard
Yes I must agree and you can see them flexing wile he’s driving that would drive me mad.
I've appreciated so many of the cars Jay Leno has shown, but these fenders (wings) look all wrong. Thank the car gods for people like gary
This gentleman's rollers are beautiful. They are a true credit to the owner, I would love to own one of these beauties.
7:20...perfectly elegant music for two very elegant cars.
Sound like music from a tampon commercial.
flyingmerkel6 lol
+Swamp Butt Jones
No one agrees with your sarcasm.
John Ralph I wasn't being sarcastic at all. Didn't mean for it to sound that way.
Flyingmerk - so, I take it you're a big Tampon fan?
What a great guy. Having passion for something keeps you young....couldn't take the smile off his face

That man put a lot of passion in those cars. They are beautiful and are in good hands.
Beautifully done, makes you realize how much thought goes into a modern car, things like not being able to fall out if you hit a bump or swerve a bit, hate to see what happens if you lock the brakes, of course great job
It looks like a boat in water. The fenders look like the wake and it they just glide beautifully. Really incredible work.
that’s real craftsmanship; just beautiful, the work and detail and design is beautiful
paul kelly i see we are the first comments after years
Clean and smooth, what a beauty !
Those cars are just amazing, they look fantastic.
Rather gratifying to see this level of craftmanship, inspired by a love for the automotive, still being applied today.

Amazing launches!
just beautiful, reminds me of 2 birds in simultaneous courtship flight acrobatics. lovely score as well! Bravo

I am green with envy.Such cars in such a country with such weather.Car Freaks' paradise!
3:23 reminds me of something W.O probably would have done it he’d had the spare time or money to change it
This appears to be the first video in Jay Leno's UA-cam channel. I like it. Rolls-Royces are interesting cars(especially the old ones). Great video, Mr. Leno!
Such great and beautiful cars. Thank you guys for doing this, for shering your passions, visions, hard work and a lot of money.
7:17 That's just beautiful, and the music makes it better.
The Twins look perfect.
This is where it all started

you guys are not kidding, this is serious car love here awesome, so beautiful

Like everything except those hideous (too me) fenders. Needs something way more graceful to my eye.
+KlunkerRider i agree. everything else is perfect. It would (to me) be a lot more elegagant if they were wrapped around the wheel more.
KlunkerRider yep
Yeah, looks like a Jeep
don;t want to sound impolite, but for me the fenders make the character of the car..
looks like a buggy
I read that in middle school, and I enjoyed that book. Thank you for that memory my friend :) Have a great night
this guy seems so genuine and patient
I think they called them 'Coach Builders' ! A term that could use run around a bit to stay fresh!
Thank You Jay for showing us G. Wales Coach Builder of 'Leno Scale'
Unreal... Two words class,tasteful...
absolutely stunning automobiles.... so beautiful to see!
Beautiful! These cars would have been taken to a skilled coach builder in 1937....I do believe Gary qualifies as such today!
Fenders are ugly, rest of the cars are pieces of art
I don't know about you but I would have loved to see more than an 8.5 minute video on these two beauties
I feel the same :-) great automobiles and what a great guy, he has to come back in the garage again.
Beautiful work.
Beautiful
seeing those two black rolls cruisin down the road would be the most badass thing ever
Motoring History Made Right there Beyond Awesome

Those cars need to be in the movies they are perfect props.

THANK GOODNESS THE NEWER VIDEOS DON'T HAVE ANNOYING "SOUNDTRACKS".
Excellent segment. He is a genius designer.

Really well thought out.
I love this episode!
You know, i originally didnt like the fenders but when i saw them on the road it just sort of worked. I like them now.
wow, awesome
Wow!
beautiful cars how can anyone be critical the workmanship wow
I think we can all agree that those fenders ruin what would otherwise be a great build. It's frustrating to see someone come so close to building a masterpiece and then flub it so spectacularly with those awful wind catchers.
They are ghastly..somebody needs to tell him.
Count me as disagreeing. I love the fenders.
Go back to the drawing board on the fender struts, make them chrome and less noticeable.
If you do them in chrome they won't be less noticeable.
'back on the road'..God bless you sir.
Wow, great craftsmanship, don't mind the fenders at all.
7:38
J is thinking
Damn... I should have brought my sun glasses.
Damn
Gorgeous cars. I mean ladies.
Jay is a great custodian.
Two exquisite RR's. I'm not too crazy about the French fenders, but they grow on you. Would be proud to own either - except I never will...retired on a pension that does not include purchasing classic Rolls Royce cars!
Dusty Rusty well in the end me, you, jay, the dude will have the same thing a small piece of real estate with a rotting box and a body in it.
Superb video! Thank you, Jay.
Wow. If I were younger, I think I'd offer to work in Gary's shop for free. Imagine making your living building these things. Yes, the wood is steam bent.
I saw a 1929 boat tail Packard the other day. mint condition. beautiful car.

Masterpieces
8 years later. How did your life shape up?
Very nice! and i like how the music was very fitting.
Absurdly beautiful cars.
Those are the coolest cars ive ever seen
Beautiful cars, shame about the butt ugly mud guards though.
Scott Thompson Its a shame that a person who appears fairly well educated takes things to a personal level.
this looks like the phantom drop head's was styled after this with the wood paneling
beautiful
thx for the video Mr. Leno. You should bring him back I the garage again, I felt like we only got half the story and to little engine talk no disrespect:-) keep en coming Mr. Leno :-) thank god you have the money to bring this to the people :-)
The front mud guards to me, are a representation of a bow wake and the wood over the rear of the car completes the nautical theme.
Very regal.
I've seen these cars in person and they're beautiful!
what a great way to keep these cars alive
Moving artworks 😍😍😍😍
I actually like them a lot, just the fenders bug me a bit.... still, great build!
Aside from the grommeted brackets and batwing fenders, its nice
This is the oldest video from Jay's Garage I could find. 10 year's ago. Very cool car's.

Great build.
Thanks, Jay, now I know how I'm getting thru 🇨🇦 hibernation & 🇺🇸 2nd. term.
