The Devastator is the result of space=age archeology, or as a lot of people call it, "grave robbing with a mission". Discovered on the planet of Hoff after a kerfuffle with the Wolf's Dragoons, the plans for the Devastators were mulled over and worked on by House Davion.
The first model was a true Succession War machine, until the Helm's Memory Core let people experience the true glory of the XL engine and Gauss Rifles.

The Devastator is one of my favorite mech designs. It knows exactly what it wants to be (direct fire support) and executes that job with focus and reason. Too many designs have a hodgepodge load out where they can never bring all their weapons to bear, or are equipped for close range combat but struggle to get there. As much as I love the look of the Atlas, I wouldn't actually want to pilot many of its variants.
A lot of machines is that they are primarily short-range machines but lack the speed to utilize that firepower offensively.
Any time the Davion models get mentioned, I'm always reminded of the old joke... How can you tell your date with a Davion mechwarrior is halfway over? They say, "enough about me, let's talk about my mech now!"
I personally quite enjoy the Devastator. Long range sniper mechs are my personal favorite types. Was toying around with one in the hanger, a DVS-3 version, but was looking at a captured Clan engine and heatsink system, alongside some clan grade weaponry to see if we can make an absolutely nightmare fueled command mech.
The Devastator was my first battlemech model, given to me by a stranger way back in 2016. I still have the metal model with its asymmetrical lifted leg.
I like the idea of the Devastator as a no-nonsence weapons platform. It doesnt have a lot of gimmicks. The DVS-2 has got (near)-maximum armor, long range Gauss Rifles, medium range Particle Projection Cannons, and short range Medium Lasers. If its got a design problem is that it just doesnt have much ammunition for its Gauss Rifles. Once those run out of ammunition its just an extremely expensive Warhammer 6d.
It does bother me that the guns are mounted to the side of the elbow joints instead of inline with the arms, like a Warhammer has.
Now its another "General Kerensky" mech, which is amazing as be seemingly designed a dozen or so mechs before and during the Amaris Coup/Civil War.
Just looking it up its interesting that the Clans kept them and even upgraded them. The DVS-2-EC upgrades it to use early clan-tech like Improved Gauss Rifles, Enhanced Particle Projection Cannons, Extended Range(IS) Medium Lasers, and Clan CASE in the arms to prevent the Gauss Rifles from exploding if they get hit. Improved in basic logistics it also carries more ammo and heat sinks.
Now the weirdest version is the MUSE EARTH Devastator that completely loses the Gauss Rifles, but carries a larger engine, MASC, and a Supercharger to make it go very fast. It also has an assortment of internal armored components.
The fact they DVS-11 went in the same direction as MUSE EARTH is also interesting, while many other design were not adapted.
The Devastator is a very powerful and well designed Mech. The amount of heavy direct fire is outstanding for an IS tech Mech.
Defense and heat management are quite good. Even with the XL-engine a Devastaor is hard to bring down. There are no explosive components in the torso and it usually runnig cool.
The ammo load is sufficient and even if it runs dry, it still has the firepower of a Warhammer as a back-up.
The only weakness is the lack of mobility. It is a typical "anchor" Mech.
The obvious drawback of this Mech is the huge price tag - both in terms of C-bills and BV.
We have a few Devastators walking on parade for Safe Landings Day on Taurus, but if I'm honest, I think they've only got enough parts to keep legs on them them...

Recalls a interesting fact. The devastator, banshee, and highlander all use the same base chassis. The Star League XT. Don't ask me how that's just what the TROs say
You use the same base chassis which you scale up and "at the top end" of the assault range, using the same myomer controller module and basic myomer bundles and setup. It is an odd thing to do, but doable.
Now all we need to do is see Davion add some of their clantech er PPCs to their new builds plus 2 more DHS and go to town. The lyrans can use clantech Gauss Rifles on theirs if so wanted as well come to think of it

I can imagine how 'devastating' the Devastator would be with full Clan Tech.
@@ambientlight3876 I have a bad habit of trying to make things survivable.
One variant that I've created is to add advanced tech while keeping costs down.
We keep the standard 300 fusion engine. We equip the machine with 20 double heatsinks. The armor is increased to a total of
19 tons of standard armor. Then we add a total of 4 standard PPCs and 4 I.S. medium pulse lasers. It offers a solid amount of firepower, survivablity, and battlefield endurance while keeping costs down. Its great for some budget minded buyers who want an inexpensive but formidable front line assault 'mech.
4xerPPC is my favorite way to trooper.

I always use the PPC/Gauss variant. I hate the XL engine though haha.

The raw firepower you get off a Devastator is terrifying.
A better version for the Dv-3 would be to replace the PPC's with ER Large Lasers and use the freed-up tonnage for Gauss ammo and more armor!
While PPCs are heavier, I prefer them to Inner Sphere ER Large Lasers, who generate a lot of heat for not as much damage.
If you like gauss boats then check out the malice, it's got 4 gauss rifles and looks like a rifleman with 4 arms.
Malice is... Odd. Something that I wouldn't know what to do with most of the time.
@@ProfessorHeyTeeEn I first seen one in MechWarrior 5 when playing through it with MercTech and despite being min maxed as I can in an atlas using 19.5t of clan FF armor... That malice scared me and made me hide.
Le Boudin "Marche de la Légion Étrangère" for Federated Sun , it's possible but it's more Lyran Commonwealth type and perhaps Taurian Concordat .
Steiner also bulds them.
Not surprising as the Lyran portion of the Federated Commonwealth got all the advantages of the union with none of the responsability.
Great mech
I enjoy it, but I somehow prefer the more survivable versions of them.
Gotta love a proper gun boat.
