      These elephants are on a game reserve and probably are used to vehicles stopping near them for tourists to observe them. It might be different if she got out of the vehicle (never try to approach near to wild animals on foot. It can be dangerous and disturbs the animals.)

      @trudypowell8303 Absolutely. The way I see it is we are "visitors" (welcome or not) and we are on their home ground. We should treat them with caution and the utmost respect. Just seeing a wild Elephant from a sensible distance would be a dream come true for me. 🙏

      Here are some more points I've gleaned from studying eles:
      - The fact that the males will leave their natal herd and roam far and wide to find a lady ele to mate with is key to preserving genetic diversity.
      - The males, just like the matriarchs, build up quite a formidable knowledge of migration routes, water holes, and feeding spots.
      - when there is a group of males, the younger ones that are structured around an older "head" male are called « askaris »
      - older males will typically play a key role in keeping the younger bulls in check, and teaching them the correct complex elephant "etiquette," disciplining them if necessary. There is also a hormonal component to this where the presence of older males will down regulate testosterone levels in younger males. Recommend googling the story of Pilkensberg National Park's elephant bulls.

      They don't really have a choice. Most wild animals take water in whatever form they can get it.

    • @herdelephantorphanage
      @herdelephantorphanage  3 місяці тому +7

      @crystalheart9 They are quite clever when it comes to ensuring they have clean drinking water. The muddy water is cleared by using their trunks to clear the dirt off the water’s surface before drinking, also they might use their tusks to dig holes in the ground to access cleaner water below the surface.

    The two wild bull elephants know a friend when they see Adine. Animals are far more astute than we humans are on whom to trust and whom not too. If I see an animal react unfriendly or wary to someone I also am on my guard with that person. Adine is a very special person and animals know that. Her wonderful staff too have that gift.

    • @voiciray
      @voiciray 3 місяці тому +3

      I think this is more true for wild animals because they rely on their instinct to stay alive. They are more tuned to them than eg a city dog that stays indoors surrounded by a small set of humans except for 2 hour walks in the park. I've sometimes met city dogs (not strays) in parks that are hostile for no reason even though I personally wouldn't hurt a fly, mind my own business, and give them a wide berth. And then I notice that they actually reflect their owner in one way or another.. and then I'm also on guard with that person 😂😂

So sweet the way they listened to you, Adine; he definitely wanted to join his pal in that swim! Your voice encouraged his pal to splash and play, but his friend wasn’t sure was he. Then, a little ear ‘flap and slide’ and he was told it’s time to move on and follow his buddy. Every day is so different out in the bush. Are the wild ellies, in your area, protected from poachers, as well?

    Is it possible they can smell elephant scent from Aidne from her interaction with the herd moments ago?

      Yes, it’s quite possible! Elephants have an incredibly acute sense of smell, which they use for communication and recognition. They can detect a wide range of scents, including those from other elephants.

    3:59 'in the wild, adult males and females live separately in differently structured herds.' does it mean the HERD elephants are unique as they consist of female and male [adult] elephants plus the youngsters? and what does it mean for Mambo and Zindoga once they hit 12 or 15yrs or pass the 20yr threshold? will they leave the HERD group? 🤔

      If you look at older Bulls in the herd, who are still there, indicates they all will remain with there family

    • @voiciray
      @voiciray 3 місяці тому +3

      Yes, the herd dynamics are unique because the adult males are still integrated in the herd. Eg the adult males like Jabu looking after the younger eles like Khanyisa and Timisa doesn't happen in the wild. I think Zindoga and Mambo (in fact the whole herd), unfortunately won't be able to be rewilded because they are habituated to humans and this could become a threat to their survival in the wild. Eg they may approach human habitation or people and inadvertently cause damage / harm. In a way, it's regrettable because I'm sure many of the ladies in the herd would like to have their own babies.

      Our long-term goal in stepping in to help rescue and provide a safe and protected wilderness home to a herd that was in need has always been full reintegration into the wild. Those bulls look great though. I do wonder if they’re just traveling through the area or looking to breed with any females in the area
