The grasshopper and the ant (1912) Ladislas Starevich

The grasshopper and the ant ( Стрекоза и Муравей - Strekosa i muravei - lit. in Russian The dragonfly and the ant ) is a short animated film directed and produced in 1912 by Ladislas Starevich .
This is the film transposition of the fable La Cigale et la Fourmi by Jean La Fontaine , translated into Russian by the writer Ivan Andreyevich Krylov , author of the screenplay of this film.
Film adaptations of this film had already been made by directors such as Georges Méliès or Louis Feuillade, but the particularity of Starevich's film lies in the use of dead insects which he animates with the stop motion technique. Starevich had already made other films in this way, animating insects in stop motion, and will continue to do so until his escape to France. _*The grasshopper and the ant*_, earned him recognition from Tsar Nicholas II (to whom the pellet is dedicated) and was his first major international success.
The first version edited by Starevich opens with black and white scenes of real insects (0:08), which were eliminated in the 1913 version. In the Russian title, the term cicada is translated as strekoza (dragonfly) , because back in the day it was the general name of several hopping and sound-making insects, but nowadays it's a bit confusing (when strekoza means only dragonfly).

Note to this edition
The original film had a yellow tint that we have modified in this edition to emphasize the transition from summer (0:29) to winter (3:10).
The songs that make up the new soundtrack are taken from the album Soul of Insect by Aufklarung .
The captions of the film were reconstructed by us by inserting the original verses of _*Jean La Fontaine*_.
The image that appears under the fine writing is a drawing by Gustave Doré .
At the end of the film we wanted to include the poem by Gianni Rodari The cicada and the ant , both in the original Italian text and in our French translation.
