I just finished reading the daily journal that Charlton Heston kept for twenty years. In it, he details what it took to get some of his films made including PLANET OF THE APES. He read the Boulle' novel on a flight to London and decided it'd make a great film so he worked for several years to get it made, from poring over many different scripts [the first one penned by Rod Serling was heavily rewritten] to finding just the right Director, cast and crew.
Heston's daily production notes also detail the other actors including Kim Hunter who found the tedious ape makeup so agitating that she took a Valium every morning just to get through the multi-hour sessions before suddenly quitting the habit to get a firmer grip on the day. But she again became so tense while sitting in his chair that the makeup artist finally said, "For God's sake, Kim... take the damn pills!"

Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel "Planet of The Apes" is a very well written and thought provoking story, and it started all of this.... My favorite of them all by far was the first movie which I saw at a drive in theatre in Phoenix Arizona during my childhood, I was blown away!

I confess, I can not be fair to the new Apes movies. I grew up with the originals (saw Planet of the Apes in a drive-in as a kid back in 68!) They were ground-breaking and decidedly silly in their own ways. I continue to try to comprehend the actual mission of the Icarus / Liberty as it makes no sense to shoot astronauts into space and the far future. So, call me a stick-in the mud. Guilty as charged.

By the way...I have to add... Did Taylor, Landen and Dodge never notice that huge thing in the night sky called...the MOON? Also...Did Taylor notice the Apes spoke English?

I'm 55 years old, so I obviously grew up on the original films. Even as a kid I wondered about the ape costumes. Were they supposed to look like actual chimps? Or were they supposed to be some kind of humanoid chimp mutation? I would often debate that with my friends. My conclusion was that they were supposed to look like actual chimps, my friends begged to differ. So I am glad that the apes look like actual apes in the new movies. Even in the original French novel the apes were actual apes, not a humanoid mutation. Lets be honest, nostalgia is a very strong bias, which is why we love things from our youth even though they are far from perfect.

The third season of Picard was good only because Kurtzman turned over production duties to a man named Terry Matalas. If you're looking for good Trek, try Picard season3. Have you ever watched Star Trek Continues? It was a fan production done a few years ago consisting of about a dozen episodes sort of completing the story arc of the original 5 year mission. They actually built 60s era sets and costumes & emulated the acting of the day. Better than just about any of the Treks since Next Gen. Might be worth a video telling their story if you hit a dry spell.

Huge Planet of the Apes fan here. I thought this was the most self-referential film in the franchise. It references every era of the franchise's history (including the TV series) and I think while the reverence it holds for the franchise was impressive, I think it makes it the least rewatchable film in the franchise. It has great themes and character arcs but it also feels like watching a greatest hits of the Planet of the Apes franchise. As a fan, I like it, but I think it's middle of the pack in terms of the franchise. Looking forward to seeing what they do moving forward.

I can remember watching the original 1968 Planet of the Apes in the theater, but since I was young at the time, I was more amazed by the make up than the actual story. It wasn't until a few years later when I was a teenager and after watching the TV Show, that when I watched the Planet of the Apes again, that I truly appreciated it for what it was. Plus... that Jerry Goldsmith score... how cool was that?

I liked KINGDOM as much as I liked RISE, DAWN and WAR, though I still prefer the '68 original and its 4 sequels (and the TV series). The scenario in KINGDOM, where there are all sorts of military goodies locked away in this huge Vault that Proximus is trying to get access to is reminiscent of Marvel's TERROR series, when Tom Sutton took over the artwork from Mike Ploog: there's a couple issues where the gorilla heavy, named Brutus, finally gets access to a huge cache of nuclear missiles, etc. before his plans get dashed by the good guys in that comics series. Proximus even looks like the gorilla characters he drew in the other main Marvel POTA series -- "Future History Chronicles" -- especially the character Graymalkin.
But this RISE )etc.) reboot series CANNOT be tied-in with the '68 original film. The shock-ending of that 1st classic film is that Man had destroyed his own civilization by the waging of a Nuclear War. The archaeological information Cornelius dug up is dated (by him) to roughly 2,000 years Before the Present: the Lawgiver wrote his SACRED SCROLLS 1,200 years BP, and the "fossilized bones of carnivorous gorillas" dated back "1,300 years, roughly" -- whereas the EARLIEST fossils, which were NOT simian, but were exclusively HUMAN, including the Eyeglasses, the False Teeth, the Artificial Heart-Valve, and the Human DOLL that talks ("Ma-ma!"), were dated by Cornelius to be 700 years earlier. With their Present being either '3978' or '3955', then this dates the Nuclear War to the late 20th Century, perhaps within one generation after Taylor left Earth in January of 1972.
This Reboot series does have a disappearing 'Icarus' spaceship, but it disappears in 2019 -- which means it can't be Taylor's ship, which launched in January of 1972.
They're altering the main thematic thrust of the original POTA franchise, which had it that Man DESTROYED his own civilization so horrendously that the Apes who 'aped' the human culture -- governed by an Elite that retains secret knowledge of Man's prior civilization all-the-while they rewrite 'history' with a 'scripture' (the Sacred Scrolls) that pretends that God created the Ape in His own image (etc.) -- proceeded to PUNISH the Human Race by hunting them to near-extinction and compelling them to refrain from showing any ability to Speak or Write or exhibit Intelligence of any kind. Cornelius warns Brent that if the gorillas should catch him and Nova, he should NEVER speak . . . because they will DISSECT them and then KILL them -- in that order. That's ultimately what had happened to Landon, and it's what Zaius had in store for Taylor.
All to PUNISH Mankind for having blown up the world. In other words, Taylor realizes, at the end, that Man DESERVED what apes like Zaius had been doing for the last 20 centuries since the Nuke War had been waged. Taylor calls upon God to DAMN them all to Hell -- to damn those humans who had destroyed their own civilization.
In the Reboot series, though, Man is devastated by the ALZ-drug which robs most humans of Speech and Intelligence -- all of it being the unintended consequences of a WELL-MEANING attempt to cure Alzheimer's Disease. I ask you, which scenario is more hard-hitting thematically -- the Classic POTA one, where the Apes justifiably persecute Man for having blasted the world with Nuclear War, or the Reboot POTA one, where it's all a big "Whoops!" effect due to a well-meaning attempt to cure a devastating mental disorder (the same one that afflicted Charlton Heston in the end). The apes in the Reboot series -- like Proximus -- don't have anywhere NEAR the same sort of motivation to hunt wild humans (etc.).
As much as I may enjoy these Reboot movies, they are unfortunately not as hard-hitting in their portrayal of the dark Side of Man. The shocker ending of the '68 film was that Taylor realizes that ZAIUS WAS RIGHT. Zaius, the purported 'heavy' in the film, was actually the Hero. Zaius lets Taylor go . . . knowing he'll find the Statue at that cul-de-sac along the shoreline, and not like what he'll find . . . because he knows that Taylor will realize that everything Zaius said about Man was TRUE.
KINGDOM, taking place around 300 years after the RISE-DAWN-WAR trilogy, has not had a Nuke War take place, and that alone -- notwithstanding other chronological issues -- prevents it from being any kind of direct prequel to the '68 classic. It's part of a Reboot series -- NOT the Classic POTA series.

A quality, episode finale, that fully arcs into the original, complete with a brief, tasteful, distant CGI Charleton Heston, would be beyond awesome! That would be the way to end the series.

I saw the movie the other day at home. I did enjoy the nods back to the original movies. Like you mentioned some of the short musical clips, the scarecrows and the talking doll. I wasn't 100% sure what direction they are trying to go in, it almost seems like they did this movie to setup the next one? What were they looking at through that telescope? Who were they talking to on the satellite radio? Are humans in space, or on the moon?

When you announced your opinion section, I expected more talking head and less video editing headache for you… I’m pleasantly surprised that you’ve also imposed your regular standard of professionalism. Well done you!!

You're right, Dan. It would be GREAT and EPIC if they went back to the original POTA story and style! Great observation. They, of course, could include the Dead Zone!

I was born in 1968 so I grew up with the Apes all over my TV. I quit on the new movie series a couple films in.
I don’t think the filmmakers make the movies to look like video games, I think “looks like video games” is simply the state of FX.
I’m not so much a literalist that I expect the movies to utilize the old practical FX if it looped around, no more than as a TOS Trek fan, I would expect a modern prequel to suddenly break out in the bright lights and knobby controls.
My hand wave to this is 60s Trek and 60s POTA are stories of imagined worlds for the screen. We see the best vision of those worlds our tech is capable of creating. As our tech improves, the vision becomes more “accurate.” I personally don’t need to see the astronauts arrive to 1968 prosthetic make up apes. we’ve already seen that, we can revisit that whenever. They can re-create or reinvent the events. Or just stop when they link up.
    Anyway, that’s just my opinion . 😀

I've finally decided that I no longer watch remakes, reimaginings, continuations, updates and whatever. Too many disappointing movies, too many times. Aliens, Star Wars, Star Trek, Bill & Ted, Apes, Matrix etc. It's depressing, and I'm through.

While I realize CGI is the lazy go-to for everything these days, I MUCH preferred the original 1968 version with the practical appliances. The satire elements worked much, much better for my money.

Dan I just saw Q: The Winged Serpent. This is was insane and deserves your brand of trivia and insight. Also the IMDB trivia talks about the giant egg prop being left behind and eventually rediscovered and briefly thought to be real.

I agree with you Dan, the Apes should have explored the tanks that way they could have arked the tanks with the with the cartoon because in the cartoon they had tanks and trucks .

That would be so cool if they would come full circle back to the original Planet of the Apes Story that had Heston in it .I have not seen this film yet . I will . However you briefly mentioned the newspaper article in one of the previous films about the Missing astronauts. And then about how , in this film the Apes were seeing something in the sky through a telescope. I am not sure what context that scene was in , but after I watch this film I will . Makes one believe that they are trying to do an intentional " Set Up" , just in case they do decide to bring the original story back in.
