Gerard wasn't fluent in English at the time, but he still tried his best, even if he had trouble understanding some words or finding the right words to express himself: also - when David asked him about the kinds of wines that he makes and Gerard couldn't fully understand the question, it's good that he then said, "different varieties", since (although David probably didn't know that) it's almost the same in French so Gerard could easily pick up what he meant.
