    I have acquired all the documentation for this machine and uploaded it to Hifi Engine.
    The instruction and service manuals are available for download here:

    Thanks for posting your excellent video. The on-screen comments are really helpful. I hope that Sony used the same/similar tape deck in the TC-165 model which I am about to try to change the belts.

    I have been working on my TC-134 and I seem to have a completely different belt system for the fly-wheel capstan link. The one in this video shows a wide belt coming off a flat surface on the fly-wheel edge across to the capstan (Fan) where-as my machine has two narrow groves on the fly wheel edge with just one very narrow belt coming from a narrow groove on the edge of the capstan lined up with the lower of the two grooves on the fly wheel. Just wondering if some-one has been in and changed out the belt system between the two or if my one is just a different but also correct linkage, Watching this video was a great help as I knew nothing about the inside of these things before I watched it, I have also been fixing a TC 131-SD

      The service manual indeed seems to agree with the arrangement in your machine, but I don't think my machine has been modified. Perhaps changes in production. I'm glad the video helped!

      @@I967 TBH I think I would prefer the wide belt, It seems strange that the fly wheel has the two grooves while the fan just has the one, design error? could be the reason the tape was running slightly slow and why they changed the system. Anyway, my deck is now running much better and this is down to following your video.

    Hey thanks for this. I have a TC-136SD and I need to crack the case and replace the belts (I assume) as it just plays a few seconds then stops. I notice the takeup isn't moving at all.
    I feel more confident about doing all this after watching this video.

      I am glad it helped. Take pictures as you go and put all the screws and pieces in trays or boxes so that you won't lose anything and you will do fine. It is not complicated, it just takes time and patience.

    The only belt that I need to replace is the one @15:00, looks fiddly, but I'll get there. Clear video - very helpful!
    I have just finished restoring my 134SD, it was running about 5% too fast. I've replaced the *Motor Run Capacitor* with a 5% tolerance 1uF 450v ac rated capacitor - now it runs at a more correct speed, maybe 1% too fast or less? Very acceptable! :o)

      @@I967 Thanks, I do have the service manual. The only mention of speed adjustment is to change the motor pulley - the 3 pulleys they reference will have slightly different diameters. This motor is an synchronous (or induction?) motor - it relies largely on a rotating magnetic field which is dependent on the *mains frequency*, unlike a DC motor. If you know of an alternative method please let me know. ;o)

    Hi 1967. I have an older Sony TC-118SD (I'm the original owner, from 1974, and I'm "vintage" too). Do you (or anyone else interested in these machines) know whether the drive system for the 118SD is the same as for the 134SD? I haven't found such a fine mechanical service guide for my model, so following yours will be helpful, and I am hoping the belt specifications are the same.

    • @I967
      @I967  5 років тому

      Hello, Peter. From what I saw in the service manual, the drive system in your TC-118SD is different and simpler than in my TC-134SD. There should be only two belts in your recorder: a tape counter belt and a drive belt.
      As with my TC-134SD, the service manual doesn't list belt dimensions, only their part numbers in the Sony catalogue, so you will have to measure them manually. Belt shape and thickness will likely be the same or similar to what I have in my TC-134SD (see the Flickr link in the description), but it is best to measure the belts with a digital caliper (if you have one). You can measure belt length with a piece of string wound around the pulleys and then calculating the diameter. Making this diameter 10% smaller gets you the belt diameter you need. Good luck. Matthew

    I've got the TC-161SD. When I turn it on, it seems to fire up. But when I put a tape in, It starts to spin for a second and then just stops. I've opened it and the belts are still in tact but I don't know if they're stretched. My two questions are, does this seem like it's a belt problem and if that's the case, do you think this belt replacement tutorial would be useful for my model. Regardless, thank you for your help with the video.

    • @I967
      @I967  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you, you're very welcome. Unfortunately I am not familiar with TC-161SD and hifi engine does not have the service manual at the moment. It may very well be worn out belts problem. There might also be the other usual contributing factors - dirty pulleys, dried up spindles - the whole mechanism could probably use a thorough clean and oiling.

    Hi, this may be a long shot, I have the Sony TC 138 and for some reason the auto stop keeps tripping off after about 2 second of play, FF or RW. I have cleaned, Lubed and changed belts but it is still tripping off whether there is a tape in or not, is this something you have come across while fixing decks. I have used this video to fix and change the belts on my TC 134. I must say that if it is an electronics problem then I am stuffed as have no skill on that side. TIA.

      I don't have experience with TC-138SD. Do you have the service manual? Study section *3-2. MECHANICAL ADJUSTMENT (2)* on page 8 in the service manual, study the mechanism in your machine and try making adjustments. Register on hifiengine and find the service manual there.

    • @I967
      @I967  Рік тому

      The service manual says to change the motor pulley, there were three different pulleys (page 15). It also says "Specification : 970 ~ 1,030 Hz." This is with a standard Sony test tape with 1000 Hz reference tone. So I think if you're within this range, you should be fine. If not, you'll have to get creative.

      @@danmozy It means there is no way to adjust the speed on this machine other than machining a new pulley for the main belt coming from the motor or trying different sizes (thicknesses) of the main belt.
      If you have a test tape with a reference tone and a wow and flutter meter to measure speed deviation in percent, measure it.
      If your speed deviates plus or minus 3%, it is within spec - according to the manual.
      So if your reference tone is 3000 Hz, anthing between 2910 and 3090 Hz is within spec (3000 Hz plus or minus 90 Hz). If your reference tone is 3150 Hz, anthing between 3055,5 and 3244,5 Hz is within spec (3150 Hz plus or minus 94,5 Hz).
