    That drive system is bit prone to misalignment. I have run into them before. If you disturb the motor mount the idler/flywheel and the motor shaft may not be at perfect right angles to one another, causing flutter as the motor crabs along the wheel edge. Check that out if the wow & flutter continue. In some cases you can let it align itself by loosening the mounting bracket screws and letting the motor pull it self into a good position. You can usually feel the motor vibrating when it is out of alignment and just move it around until least vibration is felt, then tighten the screws while holding it.

    Thanks for the video.
    I used to work for a company called Teletape in London. We specialised in all tape formats.
    I got one of these machines as a staff bonus along with a couple of expensive microphones from Sony.
    I think I took it out half a dozen times and never really used it.
    I still have it with it's box and it is in mint condition. I know the reporters that bought them used to bash them about a bit.
    A couple of things worth mentioning. The belt can be removed by taking out the one screw that hold down the capstan. The belt slides under the other plate and loos back over the spindle.
    The Alsop Cleaner was designed to be used in fast forward or rewind and not play as far as I remember. As you say these machines are a nightmare to take apart. I gave up with my other portable recorder the WM-D6C. That one is also still in a box somewhere.
    I will have to see if I can find them and check them out .
    I think I might still have some Panasonic azimuth test tapes.
    Thanks agin as this is not quite so scary now.
    PS when I took stuff apart I used to draw all the elevations and name them top front bottom etc and place the screws in holes in the position of the sketch.
    My engineer used to call screws let over "Pocket Screw"
    Regards Jeremy Travis

      Well I am in Canada. We have been on the metric system for 50+ years here. I still think in inches and feet, and farenheit only because so much or our stuff is american and they still deal with that old obsolete method of weights and measures. The metric system is so much simpler, but when your biggest trading partner still uses the old system we have to be able to think both ways.

    Thanks for this video! I just pulled out my gently used TCD5M, which I bought new in the early 80s, but it has been sitting for maybe a decade. Everything works except the fast forward, so I can see it must be the same the same belt you replaced. Your instructions are clear and I won't have any trouble with it. But I'll need to find a belt!. Where can I get one? I can probably find a parts list for the machine, but I might do better knowing the actual size of the belt.
    It's a great relief to know it is that simple!

    The reason they have w&f issues is that the rubber ring on the flywheel that the motor engages with deteriorates and the motor starts to slip on the surface. There's has never been a replacement ring for it (Sony would have had you replace the whole flywheel when they were fresh and still existed), so these decks will continue to fail more and more until someone does something about it. I have had one for about 20 years, and it sounds perfect on newer, smoother tapes, but it has trouble when I put an old tape, or one that gives any real resistance. There's a guy I know of that will replace the rubber for you, but you have to take it out of the deck and send it to him, and it's expensive; he has to remove the old rubber, bond new rubber to it, and then turn it down on a lathe to the correct thickness and taper angle.

    Yea, pretty interesting just how sensitive a scope can be. My DSO has a filter that will clean the signal up a bit, but it will not reject a signal all together like an AM carrier. It can filter out some of the noise from lights and stuff like that.

      My scope has a bw limit of 20 megs switch but the carrier is 1440 kHz and the antenna is on the other side of the garage. It puts out 400 mW which is not much but enough to get into devices that are close.

    Forgive my ignorance but there is more than just one belt in this machine. The kit I received has 3 belts and they're all way thinner then the one you used. If one is bad, is it not likely they are all in need of replacement? For a video with overhaul in the title I was expecting to see all of the belts replaced. Getting to them and properly re-assembling would have been very helpful. The one you did was the easiest to get at and pretty obvious how to replace. The real utility of videos like this is the difficult stuff that non-techs need help visualizing or explaining the way something works or how to avoid pitfalls along the way. Any hack, like myself, can remove screws take off a back cover and put in a belt. That said, I appreciate your videos and I've been able to repair and maintain my equipment (DAT/Digital8) by watching your channel so thanks.

      Well you are when I make 30.00 to change a belt and a belt these days costs 10.00, changing 3 would cost 30 in parts. Are you about to put 30.00 in parts for something you make 30.00 on. Remember the vast majority of the things I fix for others are things they want to spend the absolute minimum on, so they can sell them on fleabay as a working device as opposed to a broken one. So I have to do what the owner asks. I can quote 30 to change 1 belt or 60 to change all. Remember that they could be paying shipping both ways too depending if it is a ship in or not. Also, not a the belts may need changing. Certain ones wear faster then others and some are made of different materials. I have a tape deck that one belt turned to black mush and the other one is fine 30 years later. Different manufactures of the different belts at time of manufacture. Some last forever, depending on what they are made of. I do exactly what clients ask for. There was a time when I would change all the belts and charge for them and I would get more people accuse me of padding the bill. Like the time I took my old car to a mechanic to get the water pump changed because I didn't have a special wrench to access 1 bolt and he changed my fan belt and added it to the bill. I had just put a new belt on myself. Or the other mechanic that worked on my other old truck. Took it for a oil change and he changed all the spark plugs and billed me for it. Never went back to either. I do exactly what I am asked nothing more.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 років тому +1

      These units were well laid out. designed for radio use, they were built like tanks. The 110B was a lower end mono device that used 4C batteries, DC bias recording and was a basic field recorder that was good enough for AM radio, considering that most of the recordings would be filed by telephone back to the studio anyway.
      The D5M on the other hand delivers results that are on par with most home decks. It operates from 2 D cell batteries, and uses a DC-DC converter to generate the higher voltages. It is a direct disk drive system that uses a servo motor, and the motor shaft presses directly to the rubber rim on the capstan flysheel which is supposed to lower wow and flutter, and when the rubber is in good shape it does. But as the rubber ages, the wow and flutter will increase.
      These were pretty much the standard for field cassette recording until DAT came along, and then Minidisk.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 роки тому

      What's your point? Nothing can be done about that because the rubber tire that is on the flywheel is deteriorating and the part has not been available for 20 years.

      @@12voltvids In the end you said that the player sounds good but it doesn't. I also own an old Sony TC-D5M but it has no wow and flutter whatsoever. I've read that wow and flutter issues with the Sony TC D5 can also be caused by a defective motor speed control IC (same as on the WM-D6C (I also own one of these)).

    • @12voltvids

      @@Turborider
      It sounds as good as it ever will. Speed control ic doesn't cause that. A bad motor can, but again no parts available and it is usually a flat spot on the rubber tire from years of if just sitting unused. I changed dozens of those flywheels back in the day. Even back then when the flywheel was available the part cost more than I got for the service. Most people that fix these want to spend the absolute minimum to get them going so they can auction them off on fleabay. I know if I was paying someone to fix something I was going to sell I would also do the absolute minimum so I could increase my profit margin when sold.

    Too much Wow and Flutter for that machine SPECS. And it is a direct capstain drive to reduce precisely that so I think there must be more to that mechanism that is not working right.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 років тому +6

      The rubber rim on the flywheel dries out after years of disuse and gets slippery. This generally works itself out after a few hours of play as the friction between the motor and flywheel rubs the oxidation off.

    • @CPUTests
      @CPUTests 6 років тому

      Oh. So that's it. It is the motor shaft that is slippering in the flywheel. Because you know that those machines are professional ones and have really good wow and flutter values and when you can ear all that flutter on a song played on that machine it is because something is not right off course. Thank you for your response and continue the good work you always do on your laboratory. Best regards.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 років тому

      Yes it is the same that the walkman DD and the professional recording walkmans used. Rubber dries out over time, but it will return to normal with some playback time.

      Or the new belt is too tight and cause additional slipping of flywheel?
      And why you used 440Hz instead of usual 3150Hz tone for speed test?

    • @rawr51919
      @rawr51919 6 років тому

      Felix2417425 Concert A for most songs is 440Hz, so it makes sense why 440 is used by Dave for pitch checking equipment.

    The replacement belt is way too thick. That contribute to wow and flutter. Also all the rubber idler tyres and the flywheel rubber wheel needs replacing. But.. OUCH.. the way this guy pushes this machine around on his worktop - why so careless? I would never give you my d5M for repair. And cleaning the heads and pinch roller? Jeezus! Poor little D5M
