auto reverse, so press the right play button for side A and the left for B side, note when at the beginning of A side and you press B side it may be blank :D Just to confuse you more while in reverse mode (playing side B) the fastforward and rewind are reversed. Same cassette mechinism as used by the DT 680 I know you had.

Nothing wrong with the cassettes or how they work. You can play either side just as long as there is something on them - just check whether you are playing the A side or B side. Simples.......
