This is a list of fabrics that can add resale value to a piece of clothing. Fabric alone doesn't usually calculate out to sound sourcing decisions, but it's still an important variable you should consider.

    1. The softest leathers were often called “Kidskin leather” 😳 I do lots of vintage and see that term a lot in vintage gloves and handbags. Macabre, yes!
    2. Ostrich often seen in handbags too and confers much value!
    3. I have been using the term “Vegan” Leather instead of faux leather as many people seek out Vegan.
Great video content Matt!! Thanks 🤩

Another informative video full of knowledge being shared. Was a textile student in college so I spent a lot of time dissecting samples :--) Pima cotton is a species that produces/grows a longer fiber and as with the "wools," the longer the fibers the more luxurious the cloth by those yarns may become. Chambray is traditionally woven from cotton or linen and is a basic weave (one over one under) which produces a lighter more breathable fabric than say a denim twill. The basic weave will create that "same" color on the face and bottom of the cloth as you noted since the warp (vertical yarns on the loom) and weft (horizontal yarns that are filled in with a shuttle left to right) are equal in their interlacing. Twills (like denim) have more "floats" over the weft which gives you the indigo color and whiter on the inside. The best I can remember :-)

PS. Harris Tweed isn’t a brand. It’s any Tweed woven, dyed, etc by the Islanders in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland using traditional techniques. JUST learned this myself - was curious why so many jackets say “certified authentic” Harris Tweed. 😊

100% Alpaca wool is popular with hikers. A small NC company Appalachian Gear Company sells 100% alpaca wool shirts hoodies and ponchos retail $150-$200. I bought a used long sleeve on Mercari for $90. My backpacker buddies are jealous. The performance fabric is soft, fairly thin and bacteria resistant. I’ve never noticed it smelling bad when wet.

I appreciate all the info, I just wanted to warn you it might be time to redefine merino wool. The stuff is worth a fortune in hiking gear now. Also it is becoming a popular shoe fabric. I'm with you, it isn't worth much in junk brand sweaters and super 100s suits. However the demand for it is so high they aren't using it in junk brands right now. With merino clothing the thinner and lighter the better. Also I've never seen it, but the wool and prince merino dress shirt is hot and worth good money. I assume I probably won't see it for years because it's so new, but when I do I'm keeping it. I love light weight travel clothes.

Cashmere comes from goats and is not really wool, which comes from sheep. The cashmere is the undercoat and is what keeps the goats warm and can only be harvested from the goat once a year. If taken at the wrong time the goats freeze to death. This is why cashmere is expensive. Pashmina goats are often brushed rather than shorn to get the fiber. All cashmere is super warm - like 10 times as warm as wool.

Hi, Chambray is a flat weave.-over one ,under one. Denim has a diagonal look and feel the weave is over two under one. Just for FYI, the warp threads are strung the length of the fabric and are pulled tight -thusly "warping" the wood they were wrapped around. The Weft threads are the ones that go across the yardage. woven. over and under. The differences in how this is done creates the weave and finish of the fabric. Of course this is done by machine now except in rare cases. Love your channel.

When you spoke about vicuña I got very interested because we have a farm and I thought I could get me some. Apparently they have the same DNA as the alpaca, the alpaca is just the domesticated version. So I wonder if the vicuña hair would also smell bad? I guess the reason the vicuña material is so rare is because they are periodically caught from the wild to shave down. (In South America) I wonder if it’s really that much difference from the alpaca material?

I’ve been a commercial tailor for over 40 years I just stopped doing that about five years ago. As a reseller I took a few risk with some suede and leather jackets that have been given to me and wash them in the washing machine on delicate and hung them up on a really super padded super nice hanger. I mention that I’m at tailor because I measured them before hand to see if I got any shrinkage. I did not and they came out looking like brand new I even spot cleaned one of the suede jackets .

Thanks for another very informative video! Do you mind if I add cordovan (horse) leather to your list? I've only ever seen it in shoes, but it adds a lot of value and I think is worthy of putting on a BOLO list. It doesn't crinkle at the creases like cow leather does--it's much smoother and more supple, and presumably lasts a lot longer. Shark skin shoes can be quite valuable, although I think the wrinkly leather is ugly! Seal skin looks a bit like it, but you can't sell it on eBay. Also, I just sold my 3rd Tommy Bahama embroidered silk camp shirt last week for $90. It was in great condition, but not brand new. I sold another one a few months ago with underarm marks (disclosed in listing) for $60.

There were 100% silk disco shirts in the 70's? I only seem to find polyester, and even those are getting pricey.
