      Really nice and informing video!
Just bought it a few days ago and I’m really happy with the shots it makes.
I was thinking of upgrading to a bottomless portafilter, but I’ve heard that some of them fit a little to loose in the “packing grinding area” which results in spilling a small amount every time you grind.
Can you recommend of a solid one or few that fits tightly and doesn’t have this problem ? I would love a link or some :)
      Thanks you so much!

Have owned my Barista Espresso for seven years now. That means it has made just under 10,000 shots. Still works perfectly. There is but one life and rather leave life with money for some-one else to spend I have ordered the Impress. Your chat helped to confirm my decision to move to an easier machine to operate. My lady is looking forward to all the tamping implements gone and no more grounds on the counter. Thank you for a lovely presentation.

There is a Breville/Sage "Dosing Funnel" which can be used with a bottomless portafilter. It just attaches on top of it. You can put the portafilter into the machine with that, have the grinder do its thing, then pull it out, use a distribution tool or whatever you like. Then you can put the grounds-filled filter back into the machine without the funnel to do the tamping part.

Regarding pulling out the portafilter before tamping... and making a mess. You can do a partial tamp. Just enough to lower the pile to the top of the filter. OR use the Breville dosing funnel that allows you to pull out mid dosing.

Excellent vid! I like many home barista types, started my serious espresso journey with a Breville machine, but was always frustrated by the high pressure that couldn't be adjusted via an OPV. I believe this finally doesn't have that issue and is far more consistent as a result.

First time I have watched you. Nice review! Pleasant to listen to. Have the Barista Express. One thing I would suggest is occasionally (once per year). You need to remove the burr and conical grinder beneath it. You need to remove the hex nut which is left handed. Remove whole assembly clean up with water and brush and remove all old coffee. If you don’t do this gradually your grinder will slow down and load the motor and grind will take longer. Eventually you will burn up motor. Poking the long bristle brush in and vacuuming out is ok for quarterly clean up but does not remove all deposits. There now you were warned. I have made over 2000 coffee drinks. Original cost was $600 this is 30 cents per double shot. Doesn’t take a genius to calculate the quick payback if you love coffee. Buy one.I will order a new grinder assembly about $100 install it and be back in business.

My main concern with buying a 3 in 1 machine like this is if something breaks. You're stuck with a big block on the counter and you end up with an extra grinder or milk frother. Getting it repaired can be a pain.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Рік тому +10

Agree on no water tank sensor. Also the power button is next to shot buttons, the previous model had power away on the other side. For more flexibility with tamp, simply get the lower model. I was sold on the tamp dosing automation for my parents and lack of grinds mess. Simple and clean.

Hi Alex, I did show the tamper with the cover removed. Mine is level. If yours is not, you might want to exchange for a different one.

I have had a Barista Express for about 7 years now. I was totally unable to get a really good, rich espresso out of it. I've been making espresso for 25 years now and do know how to do it. I switched to an Ascaso Dream, which was much more difficult to use but also made much better coffee. I got frustrated with the lack of parts for it and switched to the Gaggia Classic Pro that is now my go to machine. Not a bunch of whistles and bells and doesn't do everything automatically, but the coffee is amazing. The Breville is extremely easy to use and convenient to use but in my humble opinion not worth the mediocre coffee.

Quick question, what is the difference between the Breville Barista Express and the Breville Express Impress? The price difference is huge 😮 after watching all the pros and cons between the Express and Delonghi la specialista Arte I do believe the Breville is better. I didn't realize how important that that 3 way solenoid and more grinding options actually mattered but it's too bad the Delonghi doesn't offer that considering the price.
Edit: Ah, I see you answered my question in more detail :) I see. I think I will stick to the Express, if I find myself really missing out on those extra grind options and all that I think I'll be more than good with the 15 grind settings. I have a Cappuccino every morning with the Aeropress so going from that to the express I'm sure it will be more than enough for me :)

And I have a little knowledge (more than little) about making a coffee. Lovely review, new sub! Just as a PSA to other breville users, pls don't adjust your inner burr settings as your machine may not need it. Only adjust it finer if, at size 1 left dial, and using fresh beans you're still not getting a good smooth extraction with 11 oclock gauge position, only then will i consider changing the inner burr by 1-2 numbers max! sometimes the burr at 6 is very good and grinds fine and going 2 numbers finer immediately my make the burrs actually touch one another and damage the cutting surface, I've see it happen.
This is such a great machine by breville and I think it will take off as their bestseller

Hello Tom, last month I got the Breville Express Impress and I've been experimenting with beans from several local coffee roasters(Eiland, Central Market, Black Riffle, etc.) and also beans from COSTCO and Lavazza. I have a few questions:
I used the same collar burr settings you use (3 and later 5), but I get little or no espresso coming out. And this is within the correct gage's espresso pressure range. I only got the correct amount of espresso when I put the burr back to the original 6 and the grinder at 15, but then the pressure is below the espresso range and the espresso comes out with little foam (yes, I do use the tamper all the time). I think the Express Impress they gave you has a stronger pump or stronger machine inside than the one they sell at the store, since you can get that beautiful espresso foam with the burr at 3. If not, how can you explain that your machine is defaulted at 5 and mine at 6? I'm still happy with my machine but now I understand better its limitations. Also, where can I get the coffee beans you get? There's a website I found but it's in Germany. Thank you for your awesome videos. The first time I watch it I could understand only 20%, now I understand 100% :-)

G'day Tom, I'm in Brisbane, Australia, and three months ago, I purchased a Breville Express Impress coffee machine in stainless steel. After buying it, I watched a few UA-cam videos. I've tried various coffee beans, including Merlo, and now I've ordered some Botero coffee beans; I also like some Aldi coffee beans at a third of the price.
I've watched several of your videos and chosen the suitable machine for my experience and pocket. I've also watched Mr Hoon and Coffee Kev; they're pretty good.
My Normcore Bottomless Portafilter and basket arrived today, and the Timemore Blackmirror plus coffee scales arrived last week; I'm happy with them both.
My Botero taster pack arrives tomorrow with five varieties of 250-gram bags of freshly roasted coffee beans. Also coming is my Pesado 18-gram Filter Basket, made for the Australian firm Pesado by IMS.
My coffee puck was well ground and tamped by the Impress and didn't channel when I used the Normcore portafilter.
You must be patient to keep doing these videos; thank you for your helpful advice.
I had an SMEG before and much prefer the Breville. My SMEG was three and a half years old, and I gave that and a Sunbeam coffee grinder to my Nephew when I got my Breville. Happy coffee drinking! I like my wine, beer and coffee and enjoy a few UA-cam videos!

Excellent review! That tamper function is pretty cool! Something minor i'd have liked to have seen addressed that all Breville machines have that seem like a UX flaw, is the steam dial. If you are facing the machine, the steam dial articulation is wonky, due to the direction it's facing on the side of the machine. There are aftermarket paddle levers that you can pickup to address this, but from an ergonomic standpoint, it seems like a more elegant solution. Otherwise, this seems like a great all-in-one machine! Tamping is its own monster, and this seems to neatly solve that problem for potential new users. I also liked how you demonstrated the ability to polish after tamping. No one wants a messy puck! lol

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Рік тому +1

While I agree that extending the leverage of that switch would make it more enjoyable to use, I don’t see it as a design flaw. Extending it would also change the packaging design, making it bigger, and probably more expensive to ship.
But yes, the integrated tamper is a sweet mechanical design, is robust, and the polishing is quite clever. Cheers!

I started using a separate foamer and it tastes better now but not exactly as good as it used to taste. I think the espresso is kind of cold. Must be a heating element.

I'm having an issue where I grind exactly 18g of beans, do all the things, and yet the shot barely pulls. I've adjusted the grind settings and I don't know what's wrong. If I pull the portafilter out halfway through grinding to WDT, and then tamp it gives me the green light, but then pulls weird. If I WDT it, do all the things, and some espresso falls out it gives me the red light but then my shot pulls fine. I don't know what to do.

Hi, your videos are excellent, thanks for doing this. My wife and I really want this machine. However, we are on our second one in a week. We tested the pressure on both machines using a single wall filter with the cleaning tool inserted on top of it and ran just water through the filter. From other videos, including one by Breville, the pressue gauge should move to the upper limit on the pressure gauge. But, on both machines we've purchased, the pressure barely gets to the halway point. We have tried other tests with coffee, various burr and grind settings and when extracting a shot of coffee the pressure barely makes it into the black part of the pressure gauge. Are we just unlucky and have run into two straight faulty machines or are we missing something?

I'm contemplating getting either this or De'Longhi ECP3420. I just feel that with a 3 in 1 machine there is a chance something might break and you'd get stuck with what you have. When with 3420 you can make incremental updates and it still leaves you with an option to use either pre-ground coffee like the one lavazza sells or illy, or use coffee beans. (Yes, I'll have to get a grinder for the beans, but would it justify the price and the risk for Express Impress).

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner

Hi there! I think I did mention in the video how to do it. If not, here's an excerpt from the manual:
      Adjusting Water Temperature
Different beans may require different water
temperatures to extract their optimum flavour.
The temperature can be adjusted +/- 2°C in 1°C
      increments from the default setting:
      1. Turn the machine to OFF.
      2. Press and hold filter, 1 CUP and 2 CUP then
press and hold the POWER button.
      3. The machine will beep once and display the
      current temperature.
      4. Press one of the below buttons within
      5 seconds:
      • Increase 1°C - 2 CUP
      • Increase 2°C - POWER
      • Decrease 1°C - MANUAL DOSE
      • Decrease 2°C - DOSE
The machine will beep twice to confirm the
change and return to standby mode.
      5. Return to default temperature - press 1 CUP
      button.

After watching numerous videos on this unit and the Ninja Luxe, I think it's safe to say the Impress is the overall better machine. There are some features I like on the Luxe, but I have concerns regarding longevity with Ninja products... they're very hit and miss. I haven't personally had any of mine fail yet, but I've had friends and family with very different experiences, along with what I've seen on various Ninja FB groups.
I've seen some issues and failures with Breville, but it seem most people get years of functionality out of their machines.

I have 2 years of experience as a barista and would like to enjoy belissimo espresso including latteart.
I'm really interested in SMEG's EGF03, but I started to worry after hearing that machines with an integrated grinder are not recommended because the beans will be destroyed by the heat.
